YouTube Studio can schedule a livestream event, but its documented scheduling controls do not rotate a playlist every six hours. To change what viewers see while keeping one broadcast live, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and set up the six-hour change in the encoder or playout system sending the video feed. Test that timed transition before relying on it during a live broadcast.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
In YouTube Studio, scheduling creates an upcoming livestream event. Viewers can find the event, set reminders, and see it promoted before it starts. Scheduling does not itself control which video plays in the outgoing live feed or when that content changes. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover scheduling and sending a feed; they do not document a native six-hour playlist-rotation control.
It helps to distinguish the event from the feed. Google’s Live Streaming API overview describes a broadcast as the viewer-facing event and a stream as the audio-video content communicated to YouTube. Reusing stream settings for recurring events can reduce setup work, but it does not make a playlist change automatically during one event.
Choose what “change every six hours” means
Keep one broadcast live and change its content
Use this approach if viewers should stay on one live event while the video changes at six-hour intervals. The encoder or a separate playout layer must provide the changing feed. Set the playlist and timer there, and confirm that the system can switch sources without ending the YouTube broadcast. Check its own current documentation for the exact controls; the steps vary by product.

Start a new event every six hours
If each change should have a new livestream event or watch page, schedule separate events in YouTube Studio instead. YouTube’s API supports managing scheduled broadcast events and stream settings, but a series of events is not the same as rotating content inside one continuous broadcast.
Schedule the livestream and prepare the feed
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage, then schedule a livestream. Enter its details, visibility, and start time. Choose a new event or reuse settings from an earlier stream. The event can be promoted and viewers can set reminders.
- Set up your encoder or playout system: In YouTube’s Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the system that will send the video. Build the playlist or source-change schedule in that system—not in the YouTube event settings.
- Configure the six-hour transition: Set the intended interval in the playback or automation layer. Verify that the transition does not stop transmission to YouTube, alter the event unexpectedly, or leave a gap in audio or video. The exact timer setup depends on the system you choose.
- Rehearse the sequence: Before the public event, run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Check the content order, audio and video at the transition, timing, and what happens if the encoder or connection is interrupted. Confirm the feed remains live across the change.
- Start early and inspect the preview: YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream quality. Follow the event and encoder prompts to begin the broadcast.
What to verify before going live
- The interval: Confirm whether the timer measures six hours from the start of the broadcast or from a playlist item’s start. Check that the schedule behaves as intended after a restart or interruption.
- Broadcast continuity: Confirm that changing playlist items changes only the feed content, not the YouTube event. If the system briefly disconnects during a switch, test whether it reconnects to the same event.
- Event structure: Make sure you created one event for a continuous broadcast, or separate events if viewers should receive a new watch page each time.
- Content rights and platform rules: Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and livestream policies before broadcasting. A scheduled event or a playlist does not grant permission to use its contents.
Common problems and fixes
The playlist does not change at six hours
The timer may not be enabled in YouTube Studio because the event scheduler is not the playout system. Check the encoder or playout automation settings, the timer’s start point, and the system’s documentation. Rehearse the transition before the event.

The YouTube event ends when the item changes
The playback workflow may be stopping and restarting the broadcast instead of changing the content in a continuing feed. Review the system’s transition behavior and test whether it can switch sources while maintaining transmission. If it cannot, use a different playout workflow or schedule separate events.
The event is scheduled, but YouTube shows no video
Scheduling alone does not send video. Check that the encoder is connected with the correct stream URL and key, that it has started transmitting, and that the Live Control Room preview shows the expected feed before the event begins.

The broadcast disconnects or the preview looks wrong
Check the encoder’s connection and output, then use the Live Control Room to inspect the incoming preview and stream status. Test recovery and playlist behavior in rehearsal rather than assuming a reconnect will preserve the intended sequence.
Do not mistake archiving for playlist rotation
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a six-hour rotation feature, a guarantee about playlist switching, or a recommendation to limit a broadcast to a particular duration. See YouTube’s encoder guidance for its stated archive behavior.
