In OBS, make a looping video the background with a Media Source, add your logo as an Image source above it, and create a moving ticker with a Text source and the Scroll filter. The Sources order controls what appears on top. Preview the composition and test the stream before relying on it live.
Build the looping video background
- In OBS, select or create the scene for your stream. In the Sources dock, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the local video file you want to play. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The Media Source Loop option is off by default, so enable it in the source properties if the video should restart when it ends. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Fit the video to the canvas: right-click the source in the preview and use Transform options as needed. Check that the picture fills the intended area without cropping important content.
Add and position the logo
- In Sources, select + and add Image. Choose the logo file. OBS documents common image formats such as PNG, JPEG, BMP, TGA, and GIF; transparency depends on the selected format and image.
- Resize and position the logo in the preview. To preserve its proportions while resizing, use the source handles carefully and inspect the result at the stream canvas size.
- In the Sources list, place the logo above the Media Source. Higher sources render over lower ones, so a logo listed beneath the video may be hidden. The OBS Image Sources guide and Sources Guide explain the source types and stacking order.
Create a moving ticker with Text and Scroll
- Select + in the Sources dock and add a text source. OBS documents Text (GDI+) on Windows and Text (Freetype 2) on macOS and Linux. Enter the ticker copy directly, or configure the source to read text from a file if you need to update the wording outside OBS.
- Position and size the text source in the preview. Keep the ticker in a lane that does not cover important gameplay, captions, or the logo. Put it above the video in the Sources list.
- Right-click the text source and choose Filters. Under Effect Filters, select + and add Scroll.
- Adjust Horizontal Speed to set direction and movement. Negative values move the source left; positive values move it right. Enable Loop if the ticker should repeat after scrolling out of the source bounds. Use Limit Width or Limit Height when you want to constrain the scrolling area.
- Watch the preview long enough to check the ticker’s direction, speed, clipping, and repeat behavior. OBS describes the filter as one that “Makes the Source image scroll in any direction.” See the OBS Scroll Filter guide and Text Sources guide.
Check the overlay and stream output
Inspect the complete composition in the OBS preview: the video should loop, the logo should remain visible, and the ticker should move within its intended lane. Check the layout at the resolution and aspect ratio you plan to send to YouTube; a composition that looks balanced in the editor can still obscure details on a smaller screen.
Before a public broadcast, test with representative video and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency (do not exceed four seconds). The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guide rather than assuming one universal bitrate. These recommendations may change.
When a Browser Source makes sense
For a fixed logo and straightforward ticker text, native Image and Text sources with the Scroll filter require fewer moving parts. A Browser Source is an option when the overlay needs a custom web layout or animated, web-based elements. It can render a local HTML file or a web page, and its default custom CSS makes the background transparent. OBS warns that Browser Sources can be resource intensive, so use one when its added layout flexibility is useful, not merely to reproduce a basic scrolling line.

Troubleshoot common overlay problems
- The video stops at the end. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop; it is off by default.
- The logo or ticker is hidden behind the video. Move its source above the Media Source in the Sources list. Higher entries render on top.
- The ticker does not move. Confirm that the Scroll filter is attached to the text source and that its horizontal speed is not zero. Check the preview after changing the setting.
- The ticker moves in the wrong direction. Change the sign of Horizontal Speed: negative moves left, positive moves right.
- The ticker disappears and does not return. Enable Loop in the Scroll filter if the text should repeat after it leaves the source bounds.
- The ticker spills into other parts of the scene. Adjust the source position and use Scroll’s Limit Width or Limit Height controls to constrain its lane.
- The stream looks unstable or unhealthy on YouTube. Test with representative movement and audio, check YouTube’s stream-health feedback, and verify that OBS encoder settings match YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with pre-recorded video, you can instead upload a recording or build a playlist in StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
