First identify when the stream freezes. A pause at every MP4 loop boundary points toward loop placement, source timestamps, keyframes, or audio/video duration; a freeze at unpredictable times calls for checking FFmpeg output, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and your outbound connection. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause. You’ll need to compare it with your FFmpeg logs, the file’s stream layout, and YouTube Live Control Room.
Locate the freeze before changing FFmpeg flags
Note the timestamp of each freeze, whether it happens at every loop or only occasionally, and whether audio continues while the picture stops. Also check whether the local file or a local recording of the outgoing stream shows the same problem.
- At every loop boundary: investigate input-loop placement, source timestamps and keyframes, and whether audio and video have different durations.
- At irregular times, or increasingly often: inspect FFmpeg errors and progress, CPU load, YouTube’s health messages, and upload stability.
- Only some viewers report buffering: compare their reports with your local recording and YouTube’s health information before assuming the MP4 loop itself is at fault.
These patterns narrow the investigation; they do not prove a cause. Keep the exact FFmpeg command, the relevant log lines, file metadata, and timestamped Live Control Room messages together as you troubleshoot.
Check that FFmpeg loops the intended input
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so -stream_loop -1 belongs immediately before the -i for the MP4 you want to repeat. For file playback intended to behave like a live source, -re can pace input reading in real time. Confirm option behavior against the FFmpeg version installed on your system and the command’s intended output; a misplaced loop option may not affect the input you expect.

A minimal input-side example is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 ...
The ellipsis is not an output recipe: the needed mapping, encoding, and destination depend on your stream setup. FFmpeg’s official documentation explains that option placement matters. A focused FFmpeg streaming guide documents the loop example. If the file does not repeat at all, verify that the loop option precedes the correct input and that the input can seek back to its beginning.
If it freezes at every loop boundary, inspect the MP4
Compare audio and video durations
Check whether the MP4 contains audio and whether its audio stream lasts longer than its video. A longer audio stream can make video hold on its final frame at a repeat boundary. If audio is not needed, test a copy without audio as a diagnostic; do not assume that this is the cause until the result supports it.

Check timestamps and keyframes
Stream-copy looping relies on source timestamp and keyframe conditions. If the pause repeats at the join, test a remuxed copy of the MP4 and compare the result. A remux can help distinguish a source-container or timestamp issue from a problem elsewhere in the live path, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Changing timestamp-generation or re-encoding flags without inspecting the file may leave a duration mismatch untouched. Use the actual join behavior and file stream information to choose the next test.

If freezes are intermittent, compare FFmpeg with YouTube’s health data
Read FFmpeg output and compare a local recording
Inspect the FFmpeg log for mapping problems, warnings, errors, and output progress around the freeze. Check CPU load as well. If you save a local archive of the outgoing stream, compare it with the YouTube result: a problem already present locally points toward the source or encoding path, while a healthy local result and a bad live result make ingest or connection evidence especially important.
Use the Live Control Room’s timestamped messages
In YouTube Studio, open the live stream’s Live Control Room and review its stream-health indicator and timestamped errors. Match the error times to your FFmpeg log and viewer reports. YouTube says that when encoder preview is healthy but the live result is not, the outbound connection can be a cause; check upload strength and ask your internet service provider to investigate persistent connection faults. Match the encoder to YouTube’s current ingest guidance
When Live Control Room reports a configuration issue, follow the specific error first. YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the applicable range from YouTube’s current table rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream.
Also check that your available upload capacity can sustain the chosen output. If it cannot, reduce the resolution or other output demands. YouTube’s encoder error guidance covers configuration-dependent problems including codec or profile, resolution, bitrate, audio/video stream count, interlacing, and GOP/keyframe interval. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitor stream health and messages during the event.

Check RTMPS when the connection itself fails
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. If FFmpeg reports a timeout or certificate error, confirm that the server URL was copied from Live Control Room, that the encoder supports RTMPS, and that the protocol and any required port match YouTube’s guidance. See YouTube’s RTMPS help page. Do not change transport settings to address a loop-boundary pause unless the connection evidence points there.
