A systemd timer can start a local encoder at a chosen time, but it cannot schedule a YouTube event or start YouTube’s broadcast by itself. Set up each event in YouTube Studio, give each stream its own protected key reference, playlist, encoder service and timer, then check the encoder preview and start the event through YouTube’s Live Control Room workflow.
How the three parts work together
Think of a scheduled broadcast as three separate jobs:
- YouTube event: Create the scheduled live event in YouTube Studio. This creates the event and watch page; it does not start a local playlist or encoder. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe scheduling the event and then connecting an encoder.
- Local playlist and encoder: A process on your Linux host reads the media in order and sends the resulting feed to YouTube using that event’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage live stream settings.
- systemd timer: A timer activates a systemd unit at its configured time. The associated service runs the local encoder command; it does not create the YouTube event, choose media, or click YouTube’s Go live control. The systemd project overview.
For multiple destinations, the easiest arrangement to reason about is one independently configured service and timer per playlist and stream. That isolates each stream’s schedule, key reference, working directory and logs, and makes failures easier to diagnose. This is an implementation recommendation, not a configuration tested across Linux distributions.
Check YouTube’s limits and prepare the events
Stay within the simultaneous-stream caps
YouTube Help currently documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying at the same time. Plan against both caps, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming help page before relying on these limits because platform rules can change.

Create and record one event per destination
- In YouTube Studio, create and schedule a live event for each channel destination you intend to use.
- For each event, record its ingest server URL and stream key in a protected configuration location. Match each key to the correct event; do not paste keys into shared scripts, logs, or publicly readable unit files.
- Decide the event start time and time zone. Configure the timer for the encoder’s start time, leaving time to connect, inspect the preview and start the broadcast in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s workflow still requires the encoder to connect and send video. Once the preview appears, check stream health and the picture and sound, then use the event’s Live Control Room controls to go live. YouTube recommends starting the encoder ahead of the event and checking the preview. YouTube live streaming tips.
Build and validate each playlist
Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for ordered files
One possible local playlist source is FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. It reads a text file of media entries and processes them in order as though their packets had been joined. For example, a playlist file might contain:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'opening.mp4'
file 'main.mp4'
file 'closing.mp4'
Keep the media files in the configured working directory or use paths appropriate to the host. FFmpeg requires the concatenated inputs to have matching streams, including codecs and time base. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts. The FFmpeg Formats Documentation describes the concat demuxer, its file directive and optional duration entries.

Do not assume a finite list loops forever
A concat file establishes ordering; it is not, by itself, a complete playlist scheduler or proof that playback repeats indefinitely. Decide explicitly whether the event should end after the listed files or use a separately verified looping playback arrangement. Test transitions and the intended end behavior before scheduling a real event. Do not rely on an untested loop command for an unattended broadcast.
Create one service and timer for each stream
Use distinct names and configuration for each destination, such as stream-a.service with stream-a.timer, and stream-b.service with stream-b.timer. Each service should identify its own stable key reference, playlist path, working directory, log destination and failure policy. Keep the stream key in a restricted configuration file or secret store rather than embedding its value in the unit.
The following is a structural example, not a tested unit file. systemd versions and distribution defaults can differ. Before deploying, consult man systemd.timer and man systemd.service on the target machine and confirm the supported calendar syntax, time-zone interpretation, missed-event behavior, service type and restart policy.

Service unit: one encoder invocation
A service can invoke a dedicated script that loads the stream’s protected settings and starts its encoder. For example, the stream-specific service shape is:
[Unit]
Description=YouTube stream A encoder
[Service]
Type=oneshot
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube/stream-a
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-streams/stream-a.env
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/run-youtube-stream-a
In this arrangement, /usr/local/bin/run-youtube-stream-a is a locally installed script that launches the selected encoder with the stream A playlist and configuration. Store the actual playlist path and key reference in that script or its protected configuration, and make the script executable by the service account. The example does not specify codec, bitrate, resolution or keyframe settings: choose encoder settings that match the media and YouTube’s current requirements, then validate the resulting preview rather than assuming a copied command is suitable for every source.

[Unit]
Description=Start YouTube stream A encoder
[Timer]
OnCalendar=2026-10-03 18:00:00 UTC
Unit=stream-a.service
Replace the example time with the event’s planned schedule and verify the expression and time zone against the installed systemd.timer(5) manual. Do not assume a host’s local time zone, downtime catch-up behavior, or overlap handling without checking the systemd version and configuration. Create a separately configured pair of units for each stream instead of pointing several timers at a service with ambiguous playlist or key settings.
Enable and inspect the timer
- After placing the unit files in the appropriate systemd unit directory, reload systemd’s unit definitions with
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable and start each timer with
sudo systemctl enable --now stream-a.timer, substituting the actual timer name for each destination. - Inspect timer and service state with
systemctl status stream-a.timerandsystemctl status stream-a.service. Check the service’s journal output withjournalctl -u stream-a.service. - Run an end-to-end rehearsal before the scheduled event. Confirm that the timer activates the intended service, the playlist opens in order, the encoder connects to the intended YouTube event, and the preview has working audio and video.
Use the installed manual pages to verify exact timer options for your distribution, particularly calendar interpretation, behavior when the host was down at the scheduled time, and how a service that is still running is handled. The timer activates a unit; the service and encoder determine what happens next.

Separate units prevent configuration confusion, but they do not add processing capacity. If several encoders run on one machine, account for aggregate CPU or GPU load and outbound bandwidth. The cited YouTube and systemd material does not establish a numeric host capacity; measure your own source files, encoder settings and connection under the expected concurrent load.

Schedule enough lead time for the operator to inspect each YouTube preview and start each event in Live Control Room. A timer can start multiple local services, but it does not perform YouTube’s event-side Go live action. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archival behavior for a stream that runs longer. YouTube’s encoder guide.
Troubleshoot before the scheduled broadcast
- The YouTube event exists, but no video arrives: Creating or scheduling the event does not start the encoder. Check that the timer fired, inspect the service journal, and verify that the process uses that event’s ingest URL and key.
- The encoder runs but the preview is absent or unhealthy: Confirm the correct key and server URL, then inspect the encoder’s output and YouTube’s stream status. YouTube recommends starting in advance so there is time to check preview and quality. YouTube live streaming tips.
- Playback fails at a file boundary or shows artifacts: Check that every concat input has matching streams, codecs and time base, and review any duration entries for accuracy. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
- A timer runs at the wrong local time or misses a start after downtime: Inspect the machine’s time zone and the installed systemd timer manual. Calendar parsing and missed-event behavior are version-sensitive details that should not be guessed from an example.
- One stream stops or another stream is affected: Keep one service, timer, playlist and protected key reference per destination. Review the affected service’s journal and confirm you have not exceeded YouTube’s active-stream limits.
- The playlist ends before the intended event: A finite ordered concat list should not be presumed to repeat. Test a verified looping arrangement or schedule an event whose planned duration matches the media sequence.
