An Intel NUC can run a 24/7 YouTube stream if its specific hardware can encode the source and you configure the computer, network, and recovery process to stay online. For a live camera or game capture, the NUC must remain powered and connected; for prerecorded videos, local playlist playback is one option, while a cloud service can play uploaded files without a computer running at home.

Can an Intel NUC run a 24/7 YouTube livestream?

It can, but “Intel NUC” covers many models, and continuous streaming is not guaranteed by the name alone. Encoding workload depends on the exact processor and graphics hardware, source resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, scaling, overlays, and audio processing. No universal NUC performance benchmark or reliability percentage applies here.

Intel’s NUC12WS technical specification says that the NUC12WS family is “Qualified for 24×7 sustained operation.” That qualification applies to that family, not all NUCs, and does not mean an encoder will restart after a software, internet, or power failure. Find the product code on your unit and consult its exact specifications and support documentation; BIOS options and recovery behavior vary by model and firmware.

Choose the workflow before choosing settings

  • Live camera: You need a camera path that stays live, plus a compatible capture interface if the camera output requires one.
  • Game or desktop capture: The NUC must capture the source and encode the scene continuously. Account for any capture hardware, overlays, and scaling.
  • Static graphic with audio: This is still a live production, but may put different demands on capture and encoding than moving footage.
  • Prerecorded playlist: The files must be available to the playback and encoder workflow, with repeat behavior configured. This is playout, not a live camera feed.

Check the NUC’s encoder and graphics support

  1. Identify the exact product code. Use the unit label and look up that model’s specifications rather than assuming all NUCs have the same CPU, ports, or BIOS options.
  2. Check Quick Sync eligibility. OBS supports Intel Quick Sync Video on Windows and Linux. OBS’s compatibility notes say Core-i 2xxx or newer is required and recommend Core-i 4xxx or newer for better output than early implementations. These general notes do not guarantee a particular codec or performance level on every NUC.
  3. Verify integrated graphics are enabled. Intel says integrated graphics must be enabled for Quick Sync. If OBS does not offer the Intel encoder, check the exact processor specification, the BIOS graphics setting, operating system, and graphics driver before concluding the hardware cannot use it.
  4. Match the encoder to the workload. A configuration that works for a simple 720p source may not be suitable for a higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate scene with overlays. Test the actual scene and source rather than relying on the model name.

Install OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Install OBS Studio using the official OBS Project distribution for your operating system.
  2. Create one simple scene first. Add the actual camera, capture device, display/game source, image, or media workflow you intend to run. Add audio and overlays only after confirming the basic source works.
  3. Connect YouTube. If OBS offers its supported YouTube account integration, follow that flow. Otherwise, get the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room and enter them in OBS’s stream configuration.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots or streams, publish it, or leave it in public logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream settings.
  5. Select an encoder. If the NUC and OS support it, choose Intel Quick Sync in OBS. Otherwise select an available encoder that the machine can sustain, then test its load and output quality.

YouTube recommends an encoder for advanced productions and describes workflows involving external audio/video hardware and multiple cameras. A camera or console may need a compatible capture path; the right device depends on its output and the NUC’s available ports.

What OBS settings should you use for YouTube Live?

Start with a conservative, testable configuration and use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. For H.264, it recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, progressive video, and AAC audio. Its guidance says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval.

H.264 output YouTube minimum video bitrate YouTube recommended video bitrate
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s listed ingest video bitrates, accessed October 3, 2026. They do not include audio bandwidth and are not a guaranteed household upload-speed threshold. YouTube’s table also lists values for other resolutions and frame rates, and separate columns for codecs such as AV1 and HEVC; check the current table before using a different combination. If you deliberately test below a recommended value, treat it as a below-recommendation test setting, not YouTube’s recommendation.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Set OBS output to match a format the NUC can encode continuously and the network can carry. Avoid upscaling a lower-resolution source just to select a larger output.
  • Rate control: Use CBR, as YouTube recommends for ingest.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: Use RTMPS where available.
  • Audio: Use AAC stereo and verify that the chosen audio source is actually reaching the stream.
  • Upload headroom: The video bitrate is only part of the traffic. Allow room for audio and normal network variation; a wired Ethernet connection is a practical way to reduce reliance on Wi-Fi conditions, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

YouTube Help advises testing before going live with audio and video movement representative of the planned stream, then monitoring stream health during the event.

Keep the NUC, encoder, and source available

  1. Prevent sleep. Set the operating system’s power options so the NUC does not suspend during the broadcast. Exact menu paths depend on the OS version.
  2. Arrange encoder startup. Configure OBS to launch after sign-in or startup using the supported mechanism for the installed OS. Confirm whether it opens the intended profile and scene.
  3. Keep the whole source chain powered. For a camera workflow, the camera, capture device, and any required audio hardware must remain available too.
  4. Provide airflow. Keep vents unobstructed and the NUC in a ventilated location. Intel documents thermal warnings and airflow troubleshooting, but there is no universal temperature target or fan setting for every NUC.
  5. Check power-loss behavior. Look in the exact model’s BIOS documentation for an “after power failure” or equivalent AC recovery option. Names and availability differ. An Intel NUC12WS specification also documents an RTC reset after three failed boot attempts; that is not an application restart or stream-recovery feature.
  6. Consider a UPS if short outages matter. Size it for the NUC, router, modem, and any camera or capture hardware that must stay online, based on their combined load and the runtime you need. A UPS cannot fix an ISP outage, encoder failure, YouTube ingest issue, or exhausted battery.

Test the full stream and its recovery

  1. Run a representative test. Include the real audio, motion, overlays, capture devices, and playback behavior. Confirm that OBS reports a stable connection and YouTube Live Control Room reports healthy ingest.
  2. Check the public result. Watch the player and listen from another device so you can catch problems that are not obvious in the encoder preview.
  3. Test planned failures safely. Restart the encoder, reboot the NUC, and—if appropriate—reboot the router or modem. Observe whether the same YouTube event resumes or whether a new event must be started. Event lifecycle and auto-start or auto-stop settings can affect continuity.
  4. Monitor while live. Use YouTube Live Control Room and the operating system’s health tools or logs. Set a human check or alert schedule appropriate to the stream’s purpose.

OBS and YouTube do not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. A successful test shows how this particular NUC, network, source, and event configuration behave; it does not establish future uptime.

Choose local streaming or cloud playout by source

For a live camera or game feed

Use the camera’s supported streaming route or a compatible capture interface, then encode and send the live source through OBS or another suitable encoder. YouTube’s verified encoder directory includes CamStreamer for certain Axis cameras; that is a vendor-specific option, not a universal camera recommendation.

For a prerecorded library

A local NUC can play a playlist into an encoder, but the computer and network path must stay available. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 playout option for prerecorded videos. That kind of service is relevant to an uploaded library, not a live camera source. YouTube’s listing alone does not establish a service’s current price, uptime terms, or suitability for your files.

If your source is prerecorded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings or a playlist. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so your NUC, OBS, and home connection do not need to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
