To schedule a YouTube livestream playlist from Ubuntu, create the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, prepare an ordered FFmpeg playlist, and arrange for your Ubuntu machine to start the encoder at the right time. These are separate jobs: scheduling the YouTube event does not schedule FFmpeg, and starting FFmpeg does not necessarily make the event public automatically. For a scheduled encoder stream, check the Live Control Room preview and use its Go live control when required.
How the scheduled playlist workflow fits together
YouTube provides the event page and controls its visibility and live state. FFmpeg reads your local video files and sends the encoded feed to YouTube using that event’s stream URL and stream key. A host scheduler such as cron or systemd can launch FFmpeg, but it does not replace YouTube’s event settings or preview workflow.
Scheduling creates a shareable watch page where viewers can set reminders. YouTube Help describes the benefit this way: “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream. Viewers can get reminders for upcoming streams, you can share the URL on social media, and more.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
1. Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then choose Manage.
- Select Schedule stream. Reuse a previous configuration or create a new stream.
- Set the event title, visibility, date and time, and other metadata. Confirm the event page displays the time and privacy setting you intend before sharing it.
- In Live Control Room, locate the event’s stream URL and stream key. You will need both for FFmpeg.
YouTube’s interface and defaults can change. Privacy defaults may differ by age group, and the creator can change privacy. Confirm the current settings on the event itself rather than assuming a default. The YouTube guide also describes a scheduled encoder workflow that involves waiting for the preview and clicking Go live; do not assume that an incoming FFmpeg feed will automatically publish the event.

2. Make an ordered FFmpeg playlist
Create the concat script
The concat demuxer reads a text file containing one file directive per item, in playback order. For example, save a playlist such as this as playlist.ffconcat:

file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'The optional ffconcat version 1.0 marker must be the exact first line, with no leading space or byte-order mark, for automatic format recognition. Paths containing spaces or special characters must follow FFmpeg’s concat-script escaping and quoting rules. Keep the script and media files readable by the account that will run FFmpeg. Check whether the files can be joined as-is
The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each file follows the preceding one, but it expects compatible streams, codecs and time bases. Inaccurate durations, damaged or truncated files, and incompatible media can cause artifacts or make stream copy fail. Using -c copy may reduce CPU work when the files are compatible; it is not a universal solution for mixed playlists. If sources differ, normalize or re-encode them to compatible streams, then test the complete sequence. FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish one looping command that works for every build and source format, so check the manual for the installed build and rehearse your chosen command before scheduling a public event.
3. Connect FFmpeg to the scheduled YouTube stream
Use the stream URL and key shown for the specific event in Live Control Room. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest and recommends RTMPS. Enter the URL as the encoder destination and the stream key in its separate key field or corresponding FFmpeg output configuration. A stream key is a credential: it tells your encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password. Do not commit it to a public repository, paste a real key into a shared script, or expose it in logs. Use a protected environment variable or a configuration file with restricted permissions, and substitute the current event’s values when configuring FFmpeg.
The exact full FFmpeg command depends on your installed version, media, codecs and output settings. Verify relevant options with the installed FFmpeg manual or ffmpeg -h full, and test the intended playlist and destination setup before relying on it. A command that works for one set of files is not proof that stream copy or looping will work for another.

4. Set video, audio and bitrate for YouTube
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and a bitrate matched to resolution and frame rate. In YouTube’s current encoder guidance, H.264 at 1080p30 has a recommended range of 5–14 Mbps, while H.264 at 720p30 has a recommended range of 3–8 Mbps. These are YouTube’s encoder setting recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband performance. Check the current table for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs before choosing settings.
Test with movement and audio similar to the actual playlist, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Check clip changes for black frames, audio gaps, unexpected scaling or silence. Test the actual upload connection at the intended bitrate and leave headroom; no India-specific ISP or bandwidth figure is established here, and a connection’s advertised speed does not guarantee a stable upload at that rate.

5. Run FFmpeg on an Ubuntu schedule
Keep the two schedules distinct
The YouTube schedule defines the event. An Ubuntu-side scheduler launches the encoder process. Cron or systemd can start a process, but a host timer does not set the event’s privacy, make the event public, or remove YouTube’s documented preview and start steps. There is no ready-to-copy schedule command established for every Ubuntu installation or FFmpeg setup; choose the host scheduler that fits your system and test its behavior.
Verify timing in India before relying on unattended operation
Check the Ubuntu machine’s configured time zone and compare it with the date and time displayed on the YouTube event page. Do not assume that the event interface or cron uses IST in a particular way without verifying it on your machine. Run a private or unlisted rehearsal to confirm that the scheduler launches the intended process at the intended local time.
Prepare for failures and event start
- Keep logs for diagnosing failures, but redact or otherwise protect the stream key.
- Set up a clear way to stop the process and decide how it should be restarted after an error.
- Confirm that the scheduler’s account can read the playlist script and every referenced file.
- Follow YouTube’s preparation guidance: set up the encoder at least two hours ahead, start it at least 15 minutes before the event, check the preview before going live, verify access from the channel or watch page and on mobile, and monitor audio and video. Stream copy or re-encode; manual or unattended?

In either host-scheduling approach, YouTube’s event configuration remains separate, and the scheduled encoder workflow may still require the creator to review the preview and select Go live.
Troubleshooting common failures
- The event page exists, but viewers see no live stream: Confirm FFmpeg is sending to the URL and key for that event, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and complete the event’s required start action.
- The scheduled process does not start when expected: Check the Ubuntu scheduler’s logs, account permissions, configured time zone and the time shown on the event page. Prove timing with a rehearsal before depending on it.
- FFmpeg reports concat or timestamp problems: Check playlist syntax, file paths and file readability; verify that inputs have compatible streams, codecs and time bases. Inspect questionable or truncated files and re-encode incompatible sources if needed.
- The feed drops or shows poor stream health: Check upload stability and headroom, then verify the chosen bitrate, CBR mode, keyframe interval, audio and video settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Test with representative movement and sound.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as compromised. Replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings as available, update the protected FFmpeg configuration, and ensure it no longer appears in shared scripts or logs.
