A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a fixed prerecorded feed that should loop unattended, FFmpeg is often the simpler Linux choice. Its -stream_loop -1 input option repeats a file indefinitely, and a command-line process can be managed as a service. Choose OBS when you need to build and operate a visual scene with multiple sources, overlays, previews, or hands-on controls. Neither encoder by itself guarantees an uninterrupted stream: the media, Linux host, network, process supervision, and YouTube broadcast state all matter.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your 24/7 feed?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or more fixed prerecorded files, repeated without a visual production interface | FFmpeg | -stream_loop -1 loops an input indefinitely; a repeatable command-line pipeline can be supervised as a service. |
| A composed scene, multiple visual or audio sources, overlays, preview, or operator controls | OBS | OBS offers a visual production workflow and documents output reconnect settings. |
| Continuous output despite a disconnected home computer | StreamNeo | It loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube. No home computer needs to stay on, and the first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo. |
This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a claim based on comparative uptime testing. OBS reconnect can help restore an output connection, but it does not ensure the Linux host survives a failure or that YouTube keeps the same broadcast event live. FFmpeg looping likewise does not supervise its own host or network.
What YouTube requires from either encoder
Configure the encoder to match YouTube’s current ingest guidance, then test with the actual media and channel. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest, and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; its encoder-settings documentation recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. YouTube encoder settings.
For H.264, YouTube’s recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. The recommended values vary by resolution and codec, so consult the full table rather than applying those figures to other formats. YouTube recommends automatic detection of resolution and frame rate by default. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder can sustain the output.

- Check audio is present and uses a supported format; verify the loop boundary so the feed does not introduce a gap or abrupt transition.
Run a prerecorded loop with FFmpeg
Prepare the source and destination
Use a local media file that you have permission to stream. Obtain the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, and keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. The exact output options depend on the input’s codecs, FFmpeg build, hardware, and the YouTube settings you choose; FFmpeg’s manual documents the loop option, not one universal production command for every setup.
Loop the input
Place -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i because it is an input option. For example, the essential loop structure is:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [RTMPS destination]

Replace the bracketed descriptions with options appropriate to your file, encoder, and YouTube ingest settings; this is a structural example, not a ready-to-run command. FFmpeg defines -1 as infinite looping. Test the source through at least one loop boundary: file duration, differing audio/video lengths, and container behavior can affect what viewers hear or see at the transition. FFmpeg documentation.

Run the command under a service manager or other process supervisor configured to restart it after an unexpected exit. Configure logs and monitoring so you can distinguish an encoder crash from a network interruption or a YouTube-side event change. A process restart can reconnect output, but it cannot guarantee the original YouTube broadcast remains available; confirm the event state in Studio after a failure.
Set up OBS for a continuous prerecorded stream
Build and test the scene
In OBS, create a scene and add the media source or sources needed for your production. Configure the selected output encoder to meet YouTube’s ingest settings, then preview playback and verify audio, transitions, and the loop behavior before leaving it unattended. OBS is most useful here when its visual scene construction and production controls matter; a static single-file loop may be easier to express as an FFmpeg command.

Configure reconnect and Linux capacity
OBS documents reconnect support for supported outputs, including a maximum retry count and starting retry interval; the retry interval doubles on each attempt to avoid overloading services. Treat this as connection recovery, not a promise of uninterrupted service or same-event recovery. OBS output reference.
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix. It also warns that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that meeting compatibility requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability. Check the current OBS system requirements and test the actual scene and output on the intended machine.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the broadcast settings appropriate to the channel.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the key confidential and avoid putting it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
- Start encoder output and wait for YouTube’s preview. For the documented scheduled workflow, the operator clicks Go Live after the preview appears; sending encoder data alone does not necessarily start that scheduled event for viewers.
- Monitor the stream in Studio. To end it, stop sending content from the encoder and check that the broadcast has ended as intended.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its help page does not promise an automatic archive for one continuous stream longer than 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, arrange recording and archive handling separately instead of assuming a 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete VOD. YouTube live stream archive guidance.

One continuous feed versus separate broadcast events
At the API level, YouTube distinguishes a liveStream resource, which represents encoder delivery settings, from a liveBroadcast resource, which represents a watchable event or video. Its 24/7-feed example shows an ongoing broadcast remaining live while a separate interview broadcast ends. This matters if a channel wants an always-on feed and distinct event-level videos; automating that arrangement through the API is a more advanced implementation path. YouTube Live API: broadcasts and streams.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only loop video and audio you have the rights or permissions to stream. A prerecorded file does not become safe to rebroadcast simply because it is being sent live. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and channel policies, and check music, gameplay footage, third-party clips, and other material included in the file. Use the copyright safety checklist before starting.
Also consider whether the channel’s programming is meaningfully original and useful to viewers. Repeating content is a technical setup, not a guarantee of monetization eligibility or approval. Check YouTube’s current policies for the channel and content type; do not treat a long runtime or a live label as a workaround for rights or originality requirements.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube receives no data: verify the server URL, stream key, outbound network access, and encoder log. Confirm that the broadcast is in the expected Studio state.
- The stream starts but drops: check upload stability, sustained bitrate, host load, and encoder logs. OBS reconnect is useful when the output disconnects, but it does not recover a failed host.
- FFmpeg exits at the end of the file: confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the relevant input option, and check the process supervisor if the command exits for another reason. - Video or audio breaks at the loop point: inspect the source’s duration and stream layout, then test repeated playback before going live. The loop option does not guarantee a seamless transition for every file.
- Frames drop or the machine struggles: reduce scene complexity or choose a sustainable resolution, frame rate, and encoder configuration. Compatibility requirements alone do not establish that the machine can handle the actual workload.
- The broadcast is live but no full replay appears: check its duration. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed archive of a longer continuous stream.
- The scheduled event does not become watchable: wait for encoder preview and follow the Studio workflow, including clicking Go Live when required.
Cost and maintenance trade-offs
With OBS or FFmpeg, the encoder software is only one part of the cost. An always-on Linux host consumes power and needs a suitable CPU or hardware encoder, reliable networking, monitoring, and a recovery plan. Requirements depend on codec, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; no current official listing specifies a particular computer model or hardware tier. A Linux mini PC or small-form-factor computer may suit a dedicated setup, but validate the actual workload rather than buying to a generic tier.
A cloud service shifts the always-on workload away from a home computer, in exchange for a recurring or short-term service charge. StreamNeo’s plans have the same features; only the billing period changes:
- Daily $0.99 per day
- Weekly $2.99 per week
- Monthly $9.99 per month
- 6 months $49.99 for 6 months
- Yearly $89.99 a year
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. It plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
