You can record a Google Meet session to Google Drive, or stream a meeting directly to YouTube—but those are separate workflows. Recording depends on your Google account edition, host permissions, administrator settings and Drive quota. Direct YouTube streaming requires an eligible account and an approved, connected YouTube channel; start it from a computer.
Choose the right Meet workflow
| What you need | Workflow | Audience and result |
|---|---|---|
| Save a meeting video | Meet recording | The recording is processed into the organizer’s Google Drive. |
| Broadcast a meeting to YouTube viewers | Meet’s “Stream with YouTube” option | A YouTube live stream; the channel owner can make the video available afterward or delete it. |
| Broadcast within an organization or to trusted domains | Calendar-configured organizational live stream | Viewing is limited by organization or trusted-domain access rules. It is not the same as a public or unlisted YouTube stream. |
Recording a meeting does not itself make it a YouTube live stream. Likewise, a live stream is not necessarily recorded to Drive: organizational streams require an authorized participant to start recording separately.
How to record a Google Meet session
Check account and meeting eligibility
Google’s current recording guidance lists Business Plus, Business Standard, Essentials, Education Plus (staff license), Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Starter, Google One with at least 2 TB of storage, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Workspace Individual as eligible editions. For managed accounts, an administrator must enable recording. The meeting host must have recording permission; an eligible participant cannot record if the host lacks it. Personal and organizational Drive quota can also affect recording. Google Meet Help: Record a video meeting.
Start and stop the recording
- Join the meeting on a computer or Android device. Google’s cited instructions say, “You can only record a meeting on a computer or Android device.”
- Open the meeting controls and select the recording option.
- Start recording. When the session is over, return to the controls and stop the recording.
- Allow time for processing. Google says the file is saved in the organizer’s “Meet Recordings” folder in My Drive. An email with a link is sent to the organizer and the person who started the recording.
Recording availability and interface labels can change. Check Google’s current help page and your account’s controls if the recording option is absent.

If the recording option is missing
- Edition or administrator policy: confirm that the account edition is eligible and that a Workspace administrator has enabled recording.
- Host permissions: ask the host to enable or grant recording permission; your own account eligibility is not enough.
- Drive: check that the relevant Drive account is available and has quota.
- Participation mode or room: check whether breakout-room restrictions apply or whether you joined only to present.
How to stream a Meet session directly to YouTube
Prepare the account and channel
Google lists Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Workspace Individual, and Google One subscribers with at least 2 TB as eligible for Meet-to-YouTube streaming. The YouTube channel must be approved for live streaming and connected to the meeting. Google says approval can take up to 24 hours. Separately, YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. See Google Meet Help: Stream a video meeting to YouTube and YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Start the YouTube stream
- On a computer, join Meet using the account associated with the connected YouTube channel.
- In Meeting tools, select Live streaming, then Stream with YouTube.
- Select the channel. Choose an existing event or create one and enter its details.
- Review YouTube’s terms, then start streaming from the panel.
- Share the YouTube live-stream link with viewers. When finished, stop the stream from the panel.
A stream started this way cannot be paused. If you need to stop temporarily, end the stream and create another one. YouTube may keep the video available after the live event; the channel owner can delete it. This workflow does not require a special camera, capture card or encoder. Google Meet Help.

How organizational live streaming differs
Google’s organizational live-stream workflow is configured through Google Calendar, with viewing governed by organization or trusted-domain access. It is intended for in-house or cross-domain audiences, not as a substitute for public or unlisted YouTube streaming. Only qualifying full participants in the organizer’s organization can control or record the stream; view-only guests cannot. The event is not automatically recorded: an authorized participant must start and stop recording manually. Follow Google Meet Help: Live stream a video meeting for hosts for the current setup and access rules.
Equipment and production quality
For the documented recording and direct Meet-to-YouTube workflows, Google requires a compatible device, supported browser or app, broadband internet and camera access—not a dedicated streaming encoder or capture card. A separate webcam, USB microphone or lighting can be an optional production upgrade if your built-in equipment does not meet your needs. Google’s hardware recommendations for high-quality video, multitasking and effects are recommendations, not a requirement to buy specialist streaming equipment. See Google Meet Help: Use Google Meet.

Troubleshooting common problems
Recording or streaming controls do not appear
Check the account edition, administrator settings and host permissions for the specific feature you want. Recording and YouTube streaming have different eligibility lists; access to one does not establish access to the other.
The YouTube channel is unavailable
Confirm that the channel is connected to the meeting account and approved for live streaming. Google says approval can take up to 24 hours. Also check that YouTube verification is complete and that the channel has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days.

Google processes the recording before saving it. Check the organizer’s My Drive “Meet Recordings” folder and the email sent to the organizer and recording starter. If it remains unavailable, check the account’s Drive quota and permissions.
