Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo have OBS try to resume streaming when Windows starts, launch it with the official --startstreaming parameter. For an automated Windows launch, set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. This starts OBS’s configured streaming action; it does not guarantee that YouTube has a broadcast ready or that the network connection will succeed. Configure the YouTube stream and key first, then test the full restart and check the result in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
What the OBS auto-start option does—and what it does not
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that automatically starts streaming. It can save you from having to press Start Streaming after OBS opens, but it cannot restore power, make an unavailable network ready, or ensure that YouTube has the correct broadcast selected. OBS’s launch-parameter guidance was published on May 30, 2021: OBS launch parameters.
YouTube’s stream key tells an encoder where to send its feed. Configure the destination and key in OBS before relying on an unattended launch. YouTube also has auto-start and auto-stop settings that let the encoder control when streaming starts or stops; check those settings for the stream you plan to use. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before scheduling a restart
- Set up the YouTube stream. Create or select the intended live stream in YouTube Studio and configure the encoder settings. YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder explains the setup.
- Copy the stream key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or select the key for the intended stream. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. Confirm that the destination and broadcast are the ones you mean to use.
- Check YouTube’s auto-start setting. Confirm whether encoder-controlled start is enabled for the selected stream. YouTube says these choices are copied when stream settings are reused, so verify them rather than assuming a new or reused event has the desired behavior.
- Test a normal start first. Start OBS streaming manually once and confirm that the incoming feed appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check both picture and sound before testing Windows startup.
Choose a Windows launch method
Both methods below can launch OBS with --startstreaming. The key distinction is whether you need a simple launch after signing in or more control over timing and conditions.

| Method | Best suited to | Important setup detail |
|---|---|---|
| Startup-folder shortcut | A straightforward launch when the Windows user signs in | Put a shortcut to OBS in that user’s Startup folder and add --startstreaming to its target. This community-documented approach should be tested on the target PC. |
| Task Scheduler | More control over the trigger and launch conditions | Use an OBS action with --startstreaming; set Start in to the directory containing obs64.exe. |
Option 1: Startup-folder shortcut
- Locate the OBS executable, commonly named
obs64.exe, in the OBS installation folder. - Create a shortcut to it. Open the shortcut’s Properties and, in Target, add a space after the closing quote and then
--startstreaming. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. If OBS is installed elsewhere, use its actual executable path. - Open the current user’s Startup folder by pressing
Win+R, enteringshell:startup, and pressing Enter. Put the shortcut there. - Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, then verify OBS opens and attempts to stream. A Startup-folder shortcut runs as part of the user’s sign-in, so this approach depends on that Windows account signing in.
The Startup-folder method and its limitations are described in an OBS community discussion started March 21, 2024. Community guidance is not a guarantee for every Windows or OBS configuration.
Option 2: Task Scheduler
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task.
- On General, choose the account and sign-in behavior that suit your setup. A task that runs only when a user is logged on requires that user to sign in; test any unattended configuration on the actual PC.
- On Triggers, choose the event that should launch OBS, such as at sign-in. Add a delay if needed so Windows and the network have time to become available; a delay can reduce a race with startup services, but does not guarantee connectivity.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path to
obs64.exeand put--startstreamingin Add arguments. - Set Start in to the directory containing
obs64.exe, without the executable filename. OBS specifically calls out this working-directory setting for scheduled and other automated Windows launches. - Save the task and run it once from Task Scheduler to check that OBS opens and attempts the configured stream. Then test a full Windows restart and check the incoming feed in YouTube.
Test the restart path and verify the broadcast
- Save your OBS scene and stream settings, then restart Windows under the same conditions you expect in practice.
- Confirm that the expected Windows account signs in, if your launch method requires an interactive session, and that OBS opens.
- Check OBS for a successful connection rather than assuming that the launch parameter means the stream is live.
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and confirm that the correct event receives the feed. Check the preview, audio, video quality, and that the event is accessible as intended. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream quality in its computer live-streaming tips.
Network and recovery limits
A Windows restart can bring OBS back without bringing the stream back: the internet connection may not yet be available, the initial connection may fail, or YouTube may not be accepting the feed for the expected event. A community discussion about OBS auto-start notes that auto-reconnect may not help if the initial connection fails. Treat that as a failure mode to test, not a promised behavior.

YouTube says a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth headroom; when using backup encoder capacity, its guidance is to allow for the primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS opens, but does not start streaming | The parameter is missing or malformed, or the shortcut/task is launching a different OBS executable. | Check the target or task action for --startstreaming and confirm the executable path. Run the shortcut or task manually to isolate the launch configuration. |
| Task Scheduler launches OBS inconsistently | The task’s working directory is not set to the folder containing obs64.exe. |
Set Start in to that folder and test the task again. |
| OBS starts but cannot connect | The network is not ready, connectivity was interrupted, or the stream destination/key is incorrect. | Check internet access, verify the selected YouTube stream and key in OBS, and inspect the Live Control Room. Consider a task delay, then test after a full restart. |
| YouTube does not show the expected event or preview | The encoder feed may be going to another stream, or the stream’s auto-start configuration may not match your expectation. | Verify the key and selected event, check the stream’s auto-start setting, and confirm that the intended event is open in Live Control Room. |
| The stream drops after it begins | A network disruption or insufficient upload headroom can interrupt the connection. | Check connection stability and available upload bandwidth against YouTube’s guidance; test any recovery behavior rather than assuming OBS will reconnect from every failure. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos through a PC restart or outage at home, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on that PC. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live setup. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
