Start with one soft key light just above eye level and slightly to one side of your camera. Check your actual camera or stream preview as you adjust it; then add a fill light only if the shadows are too strong, or a backlight if you blend into the background. Match the color of your lights and control competing windows, monitors, and room fixtures.
Build a simple setup first
Lighting needs to look right to the camera, not merely bright to your eyes. A room may feel well lit while your face appears dim in the stream preview, so make adjustments while watching the camera image.
1. Place a soft key light
The key is the main light on your face. Put it a little off the camera axis and above eye level so your face keeps some shape rather than looking flat. Use a large diffused source, a softbox, a diffused LED panel, or light bounced off a suitable surface. A larger or diffused source produces gentler shadows than a small, bare light.
2. Add fill only if needed
Fill light lifts the shadows on the side of your face opposite the key. Place it on that side and adjust its level until the contrast suits the look you want. There is no single fill-to-key ratio established for every small creator setup; judge it in your preview.

3. Add a backlight if you merge with the background
A light behind and above you can separate your hair and shoulders from the background. Light the background separately only if you want more mood or color separation. Keep colored background lighting from tinting the natural-looking light on your face.
You do not need to begin with a full multi-light studio. Godox’s live-stream example includes key, fill, environment, and background lighting, but it is an elaborate production example rather than a minimum requirement for a home setup. Match the lights to your camera
Keep white-light color consistent
Color temperature describes whether a light appears warmer or cooler; CRI describes how accurately it renders colors. These are different properties. Choose a consistent white-light temperature, set your fixtures to match, reduce or control stray room lights, and white-balance your camera. A window, monitor, and warm ceiling fixture can cast different colors across the same face.
A high CRI alone does not guarantee a good image. Position, brightness, color temperature, diffusion, and camera settings all affect the result. Elgato’s manufacturer guidance says CRI above 90 is good for everyday video use and above 94 is a stronger target; treat those as vendor guidance, not an independent standard or a substitute for checking your image. Balance your face and background
If your face looks dark against a bright window or screen, increase the light on your face, dim the background, or reposition or control the window. A room that looks bright in person can still leave the subject underexposed on camera. Change one thing at a time while watching the preview.
Check glasses glare
If the key reflects in your glasses, raise it and move it farther off-axis, then check the preview again. If one side of your face looks blue and the other orange, match the light sources or control the stray source rather than trying to solve the mismatch by adding more lights.

Choose a streaming light by its fit, not its label
Compare usable brightness at the distance where you will put the light, adjustable white-light color, color rendering, diffusion options, mount, and the space available around your desk and camera. Check whether a fixture can accept a compatible softbox or diffuser and whether its clamp or stand will fit your setup. There is no universally best streaming light established by the available product information.

A softbox or diffuser and a compatible mount are useful accessory categories, but fit and load capacity depend on the particular light. Check the fixture’s compatibility rather than assuming an accessory is universal.

Is your current light good enough?
Use the camera or stream preview to check face exposure, shadow contrast, color consistency, and whether you separate clearly from the background. If those look right, the light is doing its job for your setup; a product name or CRI number alone cannot answer that question.
