Use closed captions when the platform and player support a caption feed and you want viewers to control whether captions appear. Use open captions when captions must remain visible in the video across players or destinations where caption support is uncertain. Neither format is universally better: the right choice depends on delivery support, viewer control, and whether captions can be kept readable without covering important visuals.
What open and closed captions mean
Captions are synchronized text alternatives for speech and relevant non-speech audio. Depending on the content, they may identify speakers and convey meaningful sound effects, music, or laughter—not just dialogue. W3C defines closed captions as equivalents that viewers can turn on and off with supported players; open captions cannot be turned off because they are embedded in the video presentation. W3C’s explanation of live captions also cautions that captions should not obscure relevant visual information.
Some regions use “subtitles” to mean captions generally. Here, “captions” means same-language accessibility text; translated subtitles are a separate choice about language.
Choose the format that fits your live stream
| Production situation | Good starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| The service and player accept a caption feed, and viewers should be able to hide or show captions. | Closed captions | Confirm that the platform receives the feed and that the viewer controls work in the target player. |
| The stream will be embedded, simulcast, or viewed on destinations with uncertain caption support. | Open captions | Check that captions remain legible and do not cover slides, names, demonstrations, or other important visuals. |
| The event includes technical terms, unfamiliar names, or consequential instructions. | Whichever workflow can provide and verify accurate captions; consider a professional real-time captioner or CART provider. | Live text is difficult to correct in the moment. Check names and terminology in advance and monitor accuracy during the event. |
| Speech or other audio carries information needed to understand mostly visual content. | Provide captions in either format. | Include meaningful non-speech audio as well as speech. |
The practical distinction is control versus delivery: closed captions offer a viewer toggle, but depend on support from the caption feed, platform, and player. Open captions are part of the picture, so they do not depend on a caption toggle, but they are always visible and can obscure video content.

What accessibility guidance requires
WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” W3C describes both open captions and supported closed captions as techniques for meeting this live-caption criterion when combined with live caption creation. The criterion calls for captions to be available; it does not require captions to be burned into the video. See W3C’s Understanding SC 1.2.4 guidance and the G8 technique for providing captions for live synchronized media.
Captions let people who are deaf or hard of hearing access auditory information in real-time video, and can also help people who process written information more easily than audio. Identify speakers and include relevant sound information whenever viewers need it to understand the event. W3C’s captioning resource explains the role of captions and live captioning.

How YouTube Live and Twitch handle caption delivery
YouTube Live
YouTube documents two broad approaches: embedding captions in the video using EIA 608/CEA 708, or delivering them through supported caption software over HTTP. For its described event workflow, YouTube instructs creators to enable closed captions, copy a signed caption-ingestion URL, and give it to a captioner or compatible software. Its support page lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net in the supported-software section. YouTube’s documented event instructions call for adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and say the described embedded 608/708 workflow supports one caption track. Consult YouTube’s live captioning instructions for the current steps before an event; platform interfaces and behavior can change.
Twitch
Twitch describes real-time closed captions delivered through broadcasting software, including an OBS plugin route that allows viewers to toggle captions. Its workflow and formats are platform-specific. Check Twitch’s caption guide against your current encoder, channel, and player rather than assuming its setup works on another service.

Plan for live caption accuracy
Live captions leave little time to revisit audio, correct a recognition error, or confirm a name. W3C says live captions are usually produced by professional real-time captioners or CART providers. If you publish a recording afterward, minor accuracy edits may still be needed. YouTube also advises creators to review automatically generated captions because speech recognition can make errors; see its automatic captions guidance.
- Before going live, flag names, acronyms, specialist vocabulary, and spoken instructions where an error could materially confuse viewers.
- Check that the caption timing is usable and that captions do not conceal essential content.
- Test caption ingestion and viewer controls on the actual destination and player.
- During the stream, monitor the captions if your production workflow allows it. For high-stakes or terminology-heavy events, consider a professional real-time captioner or CART provider.
Keep a YouTube stream running without keeping a computer on
If your stream is prerecorded video that you want to loop on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Captions are a separate accessibility decision; make sure the video and chosen caption workflow provide the captions your audience needs.
