How to Add a Countdown Timer to a YouTube Live Stream

Put a countdown in the scene viewers see: add a timer webpage as an OBS Browser Source, position it, and verify it in YouTube Live Control Room before going live.

To show a countdown to viewers, add it to the scene your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS Studio, the simplest approach is to load a timer webpage as a Browser source, position it in the scene, then confirm it appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before going live. A timer open in a separate window on your computer is not part of the broadcast unless you add it to the outgoing scene.

Add a countdown timer in OBS

  1. Choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene that should display the countdown, such as a “Starting Soon” scene. You can create a scene if you do not already have one.
  2. Get a timer page URL. Choose a timer that provides a browser-view URL, or use a timer page hosted locally on your computer. The exact URL, start and reset controls, and appearance depend on the timer you choose. For example, TimerBox explains how to use a generated URL in OBS (TimerBox instructions); this is an example, not an endorsement.
  3. Add the page to OBS. In the scene’s Sources dock, select +, choose Browser, and enter the timer URL. Set the source width and height to suit the timer layout. OBS documents 800 × 600 as the Browser Source default viewport; it is not a required stream resolution. See OBS Browser Source documentation.
  4. Place and size the timer. Position the source in the OBS canvas and resize it so it sits within the intended safe area. Check that it does not cover a host, captions, or other important content. If the page has an opaque background or extra controls, look for a transparent overlay URL or display options supported by that timer. Not every timer offers these options.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  6. Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the timer is visible and correctly placed; for a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s documented workflow is to click Go live after the preview appears. Test the picture and sound in advance, following YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance.

Keep the stream key private: it allows an encoder to send a feed to your YouTube stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live stream settings help. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room.

Choose a timer that fits your stream

A browser-based timer URL is convenient when you want a hosted page; a local timer page or script may suit a setup that needs to work without internet access. Before choosing, check the timer’s own instructions for these practical details:

  • Whether it supports a transparent background or overlay view.
  • Whether the countdown starts automatically or needs a manual start, and whether it can be reset or controlled remotely.
  • Whether it works offline, and which dimensions or styling options it supports.
  • Whether it plays an audio alert. A visual layer does not automatically mute a microphone or other audio source; verify your audio mix separately.

OBS Browser Source can load a webpage from a URL or local machine, but OBS does not prescribe a particular countdown script or timer behavior. Stagetimer’s OBS tutorial demonstrates one service’s timer and transparent-background workflow; that example does not mean all timer services support transparency.

Do not confuse a countdown with YouTube’s break overlay

YouTube’s break overlay is intended to show an away slate while a streamer takes a break. It is not the same as a creator-designed “Starting Soon” countdown. YouTube’s break overlay instructions describe testing it through the Take a Break flow and note that the overlay does not control stream audio. For a countdown, add the timer to the encoder’s scene or use the timer functionality provided by your chosen setup.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect timer

  • The timer does not appear in OBS: Confirm the correct scene is active, the Browser Source URL is correct, and its width and height are nonzero and large enough for the page. Check the timer service’s instructions if its page requires particular settings.
  • The timer has a background or unwanted content: Check whether the timer offers a transparent overlay URL or display customization. Do not assume a CSS change will work with every service.
  • You can see it locally, but viewers cannot: Make sure the timer is in the scene actually sent to the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.
  • Your encoder does not have a Browser source: Browser-source support and steps vary by encoder. YouTube cautions that not all encoders support browser sources in the same way; consult the encoder’s current help or use an encoder that can include a webpage in its scene.
  • The timer is visible but the audio is wrong: Check the microphone and other audio sources separately. Adding or changing a visual source does not itself silence them.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, rather than show a countdown before a camera-led broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.
