Estimate monthly transfer before you choose
Use the total outgoing stream bitrate, not just the video bitrate, and account for the hours you expect to stream. As a useful decimal estimate, each 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days sends about 324 GB (1 Mbps × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 ÷ 8). Actual provider billing may use GiB, and overhead or changes in uptime can shift the total.
- Set the target video resolution and frame rate, then choose the corresponding encoder bitrate.
- Add audio bitrate to estimate the total stream bitrate.
- Multiply the total Mbps by 324 to estimate decimal GB for a 30-day, 24-hour stream. For partial uptime, scale the estimate by the fraction of the month online.
- Compare the result with the DigitalOcean plan’s included transfer, bearing in mind that its allowance is pooled across your team and additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB. For Contabo, read “unlimited” alongside the fair-use policy’s possible throttling language.

Set up a server-side encoder for YouTube Live
The exact commands depend on your encoder and how your files are prepared; the essential configuration is consistent: choose compatible output settings, protect the stream key, and verify the stream from the VPS before relying on it. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video codecs. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60. YouTube encoder settings
- Prepare the VPS and media. Install the operating system and encoder you intend to use, and make sure the uploaded files are accessible to it. Decide whether the workflow can copy/remux the existing video or needs real-time re-encoding; the latter changes the CPU requirement.

Bitrate and bandwidth headroom
YouTube’s guidance says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Copyright, reused material, and long broadcasts
- Rights still apply to prerecorded video. Use content you own or have permission to stream, including music and other embedded material. A file being prerecorded does not make it exempt from YouTube’s copyright rules. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
- Reused-content eligibility is separate from stream uptime. A stream that stays online does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization. Use the same acceptance test for either provider
- Run the encoder from the region and plan you are considering.
- Send representative video and audio at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Verify YouTube stream health and monitor for dropped frames or reconnects during a sustained test.
- Check CPU and memory use if encoding, and confirm the transfer estimate fits the plan’s terms.
This test is more informative for your use case than comparing advertised port rates alone; it is not a substitute for a provider uptime guarantee.

- YouTube shows unstable or poor stream health: reduce the bitrate or resolution, verify the encoder’s CBR and keyframe settings, and rerun a test with representative movement and audio. Check whether the route sustains the total bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The encoder cannot connect: confirm that the RTMPS server URL and stream key match the active broadcast, and check that the VPS can reach the destination. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The VPS struggles during encoding: distinguish re-encoding from copying/remuxing. If the CPU is saturated, lower the encoding workload or select a plan with resources appropriate to real-time encoding, then test again.
- Transfer charges exceed expectations on DigitalOcean: compare actual outbound usage with the plan allowance, accounting for the team-level pool and the $0.01/GiB excess rate in the billing documentation.
- Contabo traffic is throttled or constrained: review its fair-use policy and contact the provider about the specific usage pattern; “unlimited” is qualified by that policy.
- A long stream’s archive is missing or different than expected: check the broadcast duration and YouTube’s current archive behavior. The documented automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours.
