How to Stream a Video from Cloud Storage to YouTube Live

A bucket stores your video; an encoder turns it into a YouTube Live feed. Here’s how to set up the workflow and choose where the encoder runs.

To stream a video stored in a cloud bucket to YouTube Live, an encoder must read the object and send it to YouTube’s live ingest endpoint. The bucket stores the file; it does not broadcast it. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room provides the stream URL and key the encoder needs. You can run the encoder on a computer or on cloud compute, depending on whether the broadcast needs to run unattended.

How the bucket-to-YouTube workflow works

The setup has three parts:

  1. Source: A prerecorded video object in cloud storage. The encoder needs a supported way to access it, such as an authorized object URL or a provider-specific download method. The exact method depends on the storage provider and bucket permissions.
  2. Encoder: Software that reads the video and sends a live output. FFmpeg is one documented software option; Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview also describes FFmpeg as an example of an encoder.
  3. Destination: A YouTube Live stream. You configure the encoder with the stream URL and key supplied in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

Uploading a video to a bucket alone does not create a live broadcast. You must run an encoder and keep it sending the feed to YouTube.

Prepare the YouTube Live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select the stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key from the stream settings.
  3. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Use the ingest protocol supported by your encoder and the configuration shown for the stream. YouTube documents RTMPS ingest addresses in its LiveStreams API reference, and also documents HLS ingestion for supported use cases; they are not interchangeable in every encoder setup.

YouTube’s encoder guide says that starting the encoder begins the live feed and creates the watch page. For a scheduled broadcast, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when it is ready. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Make the bucket object available to the encoder

Before configuring the encoder, determine how it will read the video. For a public object, the provider may offer a directly accessible URL; for a private object, the encoder needs an authenticated retrieval method supported by that provider. The reviewed official documentation does not establish a universal private-bucket URL, command, or credential pattern, so do not assume that a bucket link will work as an input path.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Check the object’s access policy and whether the encoder’s runtime identity or credentials can read it.
  • Confirm the object’s actual location and whether the encoder can reach it over the network.
  • Check the file’s container and audio/video codecs against the chosen encoder and YouTube ingest configuration.
  • Handle credentials securely. Avoid embedding long-lived secrets in scripts or exposing them in logs.

Configure and start an encoder

Use an encoder that can read the object through your provider’s supported access method and send a compatible live output to YouTube. FFmpeg is one software option, but a correct command depends on the object retrieval method, media format, selected ingest protocol, and YouTube stream settings. The available official sources do not provide a complete private-bucket fetch command or provider-specific authentication recipe, so a single copy-and-paste command would be misleading.

  1. On the machine or cloud instance that will run the encoder, verify that it can read the object using the storage provider’s documented method.
  2. Configure the encoder’s input to read that object. If the media is not already in a compatible format, configure appropriate transcoding rather than assuming the file can be passed through unchanged.
  3. Set the output to the YouTube stream URL and key. Use the ingest protocol and settings shown for the stream and supported by the encoder.
  4. Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the selected format and stream configuration. The relevant values are not universal; the YouTube API reference lists supported resolution values including 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2160p, and variable.
  5. Start the encoder, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed. For a scheduled stream, inspect the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live.
  6. When finished, stop the encoder’s output and end the broadcast in Live Control Room.

For HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, YouTube documents HLS ingestion. HLS sends media in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP stream, so YouTube says it has higher latency. Confirm that your encoder and stream configuration support the protocol before choosing it.

Should the encoder run locally or in the cloud?

Where it runs Useful when What to plan for
Local computer You are present to start and monitor a one-time broadcast. The computer, encoder, network connection, and access to the bucket must remain available during the stream.
Cloud compute You need an unattended or scheduled encoder process. Check compute and network costs, bucket permissions, object retrieval, restart behavior, and how you will monitor the process. Provider-specific setup is required.
Google Cloud Live Stream API You need a managed live-processing architecture and can supply a live input signal. Google’s documentation describes RTMP or SRT input, transcoding to HLS or DASH, and saving outputs to Cloud Storage. It does not document automatically taking a prerecorded bucket object and publishing it directly to YouTube Live.

Google Cloud’s preview guide demonstrates FFmpeg sending an H.264/AAC FLV test stream to a Live Stream API input URI, while its HLS quickstart creates a bucket for manifests and segments. Those examples describe a live-processing workflow, not a turnkey bucket-object-to-YouTube broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube receives no signal: Confirm the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are correct, and the chosen ingest protocol matches the stream configuration.
  • The encoder cannot open the video: Check object permissions, credentials, network access, and the provider-specific retrieval method. A bucket location is not necessarily a directly readable media URL.
  • YouTube shows an error or unstable feed: Check the encoder’s output format and settings against YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected protocol and resolution. Do not assume one bitrate or frame rate fits every configuration.
  • The preview appears but the scheduled broadcast is not public: In Live Control Room, review the preview and select Go live when you are ready.
  • The broadcast has more latency than expected: If using HLS, account for its segment-based delivery; YouTube identifies it as higher-latency than RTMP.
  • The stream stops when you leave: The encoder is likely running on a local machine or process that has stopped. For unattended operation, use managed cloud compute or a cloud streaming service and verify how it handles restarts and failures.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Having a video file in your bucket does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before going live, confirm that you hold the necessary rights to the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded or reused material does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization; eligibility depends on YouTube’s policies and review of the channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a cloud storage bucket stream directly to YouTube Live?

No. The bucket stores the video; an encoder must read it and send the live feed to YouTube.

Does Google Cloud Live Stream API publish a stored video object directly to YouTube?

The cited Google Cloud documentation describes live RTMP or SRT input and HLS or DASH output saved to Cloud Storage, not direct publishing of a prerecorded bucket object to YouTube.
