You can do this with native YouTube tools, an integrated recording platform such as StreamYard, or a separate clipping service; an AI-selected segment is a draft, not a finished post.
1. Start with a usable recording
Save the finished livestream recording somewhere you can access it for editing. If you marked moments while live, use those notes to guide the first review rather than asking a tool to search the whole recording unaided.
StreamYard documents a “Clip that” voice cue that marks the preceding 30 seconds as a candidate highlight. That can help identify a moment to revisit, but the marked section may need a longer lead-in or ending to make sense as a standalone clip.
2. Find candidate moments
Use AI suggestions for a first pass
Upload or select the recording in an AI clipping feature that supports its format. StreamYard says its AI Clips feature analyzes a recording and generates suggested clips. This is a vendor-described capability, not an independent assessment of selection accuracy.

Review the candidates against the full recording. Keep a clip only when it communicates a complete idea: enough setup for a new viewer to understand the point, the relevant moment, and a conclusion that does not cut off the speaker’s meaning. A dramatic phrase or reaction can be a useful starting point, but it is not automatically a good standalone edit.
Use YouTube’s built-in tools when the source is already there
YouTube Studio documents ways to select a segment from your own eligible long-form video and make a Clip or Short. If the recording is already on YouTube and you only need a segment, try this route before paying for another tool. Check the current feature and eligibility details in YouTube’s Clips help page.

3. Choose a workflow that fits the recording

These documented capabilities do not establish that one tool produces better clips than another. Choose based on your source footage and how much control you need, then inspect the exported result yourself.
4. Reframe each candidate for vertical viewing
For a vertical post, check the whole clip in a 9:16 preview. Keep the speaker, gameplay action, key interface elements, or other subject inside the crop. Do not assume automatic reframing will follow the important part of a fast-moving game or a shared screen correctly.

StreamYard says AI Clips produces vertical 9:16 clips. Its manual Shorts/Reels workflow can also adapt horizontal video with a blurred background. Whichever route you use, preview the crop from beginning to end: a subject can move out of frame, and text or game HUD elements near the edges can be cut off.
5. Generate captions, then correct them
Automatic captions make spoken content easier to follow, but transcription is a draft. Compare them with the recording and correct names, game titles, character names, technical terms, punctuation, and timing. Check that captions do not cover important gameplay or on-screen text and remain readable on a phone.

StreamYard documents automatically generated captions and a transcript-based workflow. YouTube also provides creator tools for editing and publishing video. The exact controls depend on the tool and can change, so consult its current help pages for the steps in your account.

Preserve what the original speaker meant
Watch each proposed clip from start to finish, ideally without relying on the surrounding livestream for context. Restore a missing setup or conclusion, trim dead air, and remove an excerpt if its shorter form changes the meaning. A human review is essential even when a tool has suggested the moment and formatted it.

Confirm reuse rights
Before publishing, check music, guest contributions, screen-shared material, game footage, and other third-party content against the permissions you have and the destination’s rules. YouTube warns that copyrighted material used in uploads must be approved for use and that unauthorized use can lead to claims or takedowns. See YouTube’s guidance on Clips and restrictions and review the rights for every element in the source rather than assuming that permission to livestream also covers every later edit or platform.
Check the destination’s current format limits
YouTube’s current help documentation says eligible square or vertical videos up to three minutes can qualify as Shorts for standard channels. Treat that as a YouTube rule, not a universal limit for every platform, and check the destination’s current requirements when you publish. You can also preview the finished video on a phone before posting.
7. Export and publish
- Choose the destination and format. Confirm the platform’s current aspect-ratio and duration rules rather than carrying YouTube’s Shorts limit over to another service.
- Watch the export on a phone. Check the crop, captions, audio, and opening seconds at the size viewers will see.
- Write a clear title and description. Describe the actual moment in the clip without promising more than it delivers.
- Publish only after the final rights and context check. Keep the source recording so you can verify a caption, quote, or edit if needed.
