Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream in Docker with FFmpeg and a Video Playlist

A practical guide to YouTube eligibility, FFmpeg playlist compatibility, Docker media access, ingest protocols, testing, and recovery planning.

You can run a continuous YouTube feed from a Docker-hosted FFmpeg process by making the channel eligible for live streaming, giving the container access to a compatible ordered playlist, and publishing to the correct YouTube ingest address with a protected stream key. The playlist loop is only one part: test preview and transitions in YouTube Studio, then monitor both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s receipt of the feed.

What the setup needs to do

The arrangement has three separate pieces: YouTube’s live-stream configuration, FFmpeg’s media-input and output pipeline, and a Docker host that can read the media and reach YouTube’s ingest service. Docker packages and runs the process; it does not make incompatible files compatible or prove that YouTube is receiving a valid stream.

Keep the stream feed distinct from the broadcast viewers see. In YouTube’s API model, a liveStream resource holds feed configuration and ingest details, while a liveBroadcast represents the event shown to viewers. Google’s LiveStreams reference and broadcast-and-stream guide explain this separation, including a 24/7 feed example. A process restart does not inherently mean you need to create a new stream resource; manage the broadcast’s state and feed connection according to the configuration in Studio or the API.

Check YouTube channel eligibility and configure the feed

  1. Confirm live access. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check the channel’s current Live Control Room status because eligibility and interface details can change. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  2. Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for the selected stream. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes these settings and reusable custom stream keys.
  3. Keep the key secret. Treat it as a password: do not bake it into a Docker image, commit it in a Compose file or repository, print it in logs, or paste it into a public support request. Supply it to the runtime through a secret mechanism or protected environment configuration appropriate to your host.
  4. Choose the output protocol deliberately. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest types in its LiveStreams reference. The address format and output support differ, so use the URL and protocol specified for the selected stream rather than assuming every protocol accepts the same FFmpeg output string.

Choose RTMPS or HLS for the output

For an ordinary FFmpeg-to-YouTube feed, RTMPS is often the simpler starting point if the FFmpeg build and YouTube stream configuration support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over SSL, advises a valid YouTube endpoint and port 443, and identifies it as suitable when lower latency matters; see YouTube’s live streaming guidance. Copy the actual ingest address from Studio and confirm the output protocol syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build.

Choice When it may fit Constraints to account for
RTMPS A conventional encoder output where lower latency is useful. Requires the correct secure ingest endpoint and a client/build that can publish to it. The URL and stream name/key handling are protocol-specific.
HLS ingest A pipeline intentionally designed to produce YouTube-compatible HLS segments. YouTube requires muxed audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and segments no longer than 5 seconds. It recommends 1–4 second segments; smaller segments may reduce latency but can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency. HLS is segment-based and generally has higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC. See Google’s HLS ingestion guide.

A local input playlist ending in .m3u8 does not by itself mean the output should use HLS. Input format and YouTube ingest protocol are separate decisions.

Prepare an ordered playlist FFmpeg can concatenate

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text list of files and presents them successively as one virtual input. Its documentation requires the inputs to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases for packet-level concatenation. Files exported from different editors, cameras, or sources may differ in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, codec, or timing even when they look alike. Inspect and normalize the media before relying on a long unattended sequence.

  1. Inventory the files. Confirm the order, file paths, video and audio streams, codecs, and timing characteristics for every playlist item.
  2. Write the concat list. Use one file directive per file. If including the optional header, its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0. Paths must resolve inside the container, not just on the host.
  3. Check durations. The demuxer advances timestamps based on input durations. Missing or inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts; audio and video ending at different times can leave gaps. The list format supports a duration directive when a known duration is missing or inaccurate.
  4. Resolve incompatibilities before launch. If stream structure, codecs, or time bases differ, packet-level concatenation may fail or produce bad transitions. Normalize or re-encode the inputs, or use a filter-based workflow suited to the media. The exact normalization recipe depends on the source files and chosen output, so validate it with the installed FFmpeg build.

See the FFmpeg Project’s concat demuxer documentation. Do not treat a list of filenames as proof that the files can be joined cleanly.

Make the playlist and credential available to Docker

The container must be able to read both the concat list and all referenced media, and it needs outbound network access to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. A bind mount or named volume is a common way to provide media at a stable container path, but mount paths, permissions, image contents, and secret delivery depend on the specific Docker deployment. Verify those details for your host and image rather than copying an unverified Compose recipe.

  • Use paths in the playlist that are valid from inside the container.
  • Ensure the container’s user can read every file and directory in the sequence.
  • Keep the stream key outside the image and source-controlled configuration.
  • Check that the chosen FFmpeg build includes the needed concat demuxer, encoders (if re-encoding), and output protocol support.

The FFmpeg command-line documentation is regenerated for the project’s newest revision, while installed builds can vary. Check the local version and its relevant help output before depending on an option or protocol: FFmpeg documentation. In particular, -stream_loop -1 is documented as an infinite loop for one input. It is not, by itself, a verified Dockerized playlist-to-YouTube recipe. Option ordering, concat handling, encoder settings, and output URL syntax depend on the actual input and output path.

Test the feed before leaving it unattended

  1. Start with a short test. Use a private or unlisted test broadcast where appropriate, and confirm the selected broadcast and stream are paired as intended.
  2. Inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that new video arrives, audio is present and intelligible, and the picture is not frozen, corrupted, or unexpectedly blank.
  3. Watch playlist boundaries. Let the test cross at least one file transition. Check for timestamp jumps, gaps, missing audio, or a failed next file.
  4. Check FFmpeg and host health. Confirm the process remains running, files remain readable, and the host has network connectivity to the selected ingest service.
  5. Test recovery separately. Determine what happens if FFmpeg exits, the host restarts, the network drops, or YouTube disconnects the feed. A container restart policy can relaunch a stopped process, but it cannot correct an invalid key, incompatible media, or a feed that is not reaching YouTube.
  6. Set an alert and response plan. Decide how you will detect missing frames or a stopped process and who or what will respond. YouTube recommends previewing test streams and continuing to monitor stream audio/video quality; see its live-streaming tips.

Common failures and what to check

Symptom Likely cause Next check
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Wrong ingest address or protocol, a missing or incorrect key, blocked outbound connection, or unsupported FFmpeg output. Compare the selected Studio stream’s URL and key with the protected runtime configuration; check FFmpeg build support and host network access.
Playlist fails immediately or at a transition A path is host-only, container permissions deny access, a file is missing, or inputs are not concat-compatible. Check every path from inside the container and compare the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases.
Audio/video drifts, jumps, or has gaps Inaccurate duration metadata, different stream lengths, or inconsistent timestamps. Inspect durations and timestamps; correct duration information where appropriate and test the transition after normalization.
Container restarts but the channel remains offline The process restarting does not establish that the feed is accepted or the current broadcast is live. Check the process output, stream pairing/state, key validity, and Live Control Room preview independently.
Feed is live but picture or sound is wrong Source media, encoding, or output settings may be invalid for the chosen path. Review the source files and FFmpeg output configuration, then run another short preview test before unattended operation.
