Choose a format that suits your channel and gives viewers a clear reason to watch or join the conversation; then use the simplest setup that can deliver it.
Choose a live format that fits your channel
Think first about what viewers will see or help decide. A clear promise—such as answering beginner gardening questions or letting chat choose the next recipe—makes a live stream easier to plan and gives the audience a role.
Conversation and community
- Live Q&A or advice: Answer questions in real time. This works especially well when viewers regularly ask about a topic you know.
- Community check-in: Host a recurring informal conversation or themed meetup. Prepare a few prompts so there is somewhere to go if chat slows down.
- Interview or panel: Talk with a guest or bring several perspectives together. Plan the audio and camera arrangement before going live.
Demonstrations and creative work
- Tutorial, lesson, or workshop: Teach a skill step by step, pausing for questions. Crafting is one example YouTube suggests.
- Behind-the-scenes or work-along: Let viewers watch a creative process, studio session, planning session, or project in progress.
- Cooking or food review: Prepare, taste, or compare food, and invite chat to suggest what to try or discuss.
Experiences and events
- Gaming session: Stream gameplay, try a challenge or new game, or play with commentary. An encoder can share gameplay alongside overlays.
- Travel or on-location update: Take viewers along for a tour, event visit, or travel update when being mobile matters.

The format determines what needs to appear on screen and how much production control you need. A webcam is not required for every kind of live stream.

YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance says Live Control Room can create horizontal and vertical versions together by default. Available layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version, and both versions use the same live chat. Check the current controls in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s setup guidance, since platform features can change.
Plan the stream before you go live
- Write the viewer promise. Decide what people will see or help choose, and make that clear in the stream’s title and opening.
- Give chat a job. Prepare a few questions, prompts, or decisions instead of relying on conversation to start itself. YouTube describes live chat as a way to have real-time conversations and build community (YouTube Help: Learn about live streams).
- Use the simplest setup that serves the idea. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started; add gear only when the format calls for it (YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips).
- Rehearse important productions. Set up an encoder in advance, check the preview and device accessibility, and monitor audio and video quality before an event. YouTube’s encoder guidance can help with setup.
- Consider the replay. You may post highlights or a replay after the stream. A clear opening and well-marked segments can make the recording more useful later (YouTube Help: Learn about live streams).
Check eligibility and rights
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; it also specifies a minimum age of 16 for streaming. For performances and other events, make sure you have the rights needed for the material you broadcast. A live format does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance covers stream settings; consult YouTube’s applicable policies when deciding what content you can use.
