Live streaming can cost nothing for software if you already have a suitable device and use a free tool such as OBS Studio. The total can rise with paid production features, an eligible platform plan, equipment you choose to buy, or delivery charges tied to audience size and video quality. There is no single reliable “average” price: the right budget depends on what you stream, where it goes, how long it runs, and how many people watch.
What you may need to pay for
Separate one-time purchases from recurring subscriptions and usage-based costs. A basic setup using an existing computer or phone may avoid a new gear purchase; paid studio software is optional, and delivery costs depend on the platform and audience.
| Cost category | What affects the cost |
|---|---|
| Streaming software | Free software may be enough. Paid plans can add production or collaboration features such as branding controls, recording quality, multistreaming, or additional guest capacity. |
| Platform or event access | Some platforms require an eligible subscription or event add-on. Requirements and limits are platform-specific. |
| Equipment | A camera, microphone, lighting, or computer may be useful, but what you need depends on your workflow and the devices you already own. No universal equipment basket or startup budget is established here. |
| Audience delivery | Where delivery is billed by bandwidth, viewer count, watch time, and playback quality can drive the bill. |
Can you livestream for free?
Yes, in some setups. OBS Studio describes its live-streaming and recording software as free and open source. If you already have a device, camera, and internet connection that meet your needs, you can avoid a software subscription and new equipment purchase. That does not mean every platform or delivery arrangement is free: check the destination platform’s access requirements and any usage-based charges.
Browser-based studio software is another option. StreamYard lists free and paid plans; the features and current prices can change, and its page notes that promotions, renewal terms, and custom offers may affect pricing. Check its live page before choosing a paid plan rather than relying on an old price comparison.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Platform rules can add a recurring cost
A platform subscription may be a prerequisite rather than an optional convenience. For example, Vimeo’s live-event documentation says live events require Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with the Events feature added. Vimeo also documents limits of up to two or three concurrent streams depending on plan, and a 12-hour limit per stream. These are Vimeo-specific terms, not general live-streaming rules; confirm the current plan details before budgeting.
Vimeo’s same documentation gives maximum target bitrates of up to 5,000 kbps for Advanced/Premium and 9,000 kbps for Enterprise. Those are Vimeo account-type limits, not universal bitrate recommendations for every streaming service or setup.

Why a larger audience can make delivery more expensive
When a platform charges for delivery, more viewers and higher playback quality can mean more bandwidth consumed. Vimeo identifies viewer count and playback quality as primary bandwidth factors, alongside the estimate’s monthly viewer count and average watch time. Its Help Center puts a 2 TB (2,000 GB) monthly bandwidth threshold on the plans discussed and says accounts with greater expected use may need to discuss custom or enterprise arrangements. The threshold is not a universal fee, and Vimeo does not publish one universal per-GB price on that help page. See Vimeo’s bandwidth guidance for the current policy.
Cloud delivery at event scale can be much larger than a creator software subscription. Amazon Web Services’ 2025 guide estimates a one-hour 540p event with about 1,000 viewers at roughly $69.74, and a one-hour 1080p event with about 10,000 viewers at roughly $1,505.60. These are modeled AWS estimates, not typical creator bills or quotes for another provider. Both use AWS US-East-1 standard pricing, assume no free tier or discounts, highest-bitrate viewer consumption, and a 99% cache/hit ratio; the 1080p example assigns $1,492.56 to CloudFront distribution, with the remainder for encoding, ingest, packaging, and origination. AWS says variable bitrate and content complexity may lower the estimate, and prices can change. Review the assumptions in the AWS live-event cost guide before using either figure for planning.

How to build a realistic budget
- Choose where the stream will go. Check whether the platform requires a paid plan, an event feature, or a specific encoder workflow. Do not apply one service’s eligibility rules to another.
- List only the features you need. Decide whether you require multistreaming, guest participation, recording, branding controls, or other paid studio features. If not, start by assessing free software such as OBS Studio.
- Inventory your existing equipment. Check whether your phone, built-in camera, microphone, and computer are adequate before pricing new gear. Vimeo’s camera-and-encoder requirements apply to Vimeo live events; they do not establish that every streamer needs a dedicated webcam.
- Estimate audience and viewing time. For services with bandwidth-based delivery, expected viewers, average watch time, and quality all matter. Ask the provider how its plan treats your forecast if you may exceed its included allowance.
- Compare like with like. For hosted delivery estimates, match geography, resolution or profile, viewer count, event duration, bitrate, cache assumptions, and current pricing. Separate one-time equipment purchases from recurring subscriptions and usage charges.
When the stream is prerecorded and needs to stay live
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it keeps an always-on YouTube stream running from uploaded videos at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. This is a different use case from a live camera event; StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot includes one always-on stream, up to 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month; shorter or longer terms are available, and plans differ only by billing length. In India, UPI and cards are accepted; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.

- Does the platform include delivery, and what happens if expected bandwidth or event duration exceeds the plan?
- Are quoted limits tied to a particular plan, geography, or event type?
