There is no single confirmed cause for every black screen when StreamYard sends a prerecorded video to YouTube. First check the video file’s actual encoding: StreamYard specifies an MP4 file with H.264 video, and recommends AAC audio, constant 30 fps, Web Optimized (Faststart), Align A/V, and a total bitrate below 10,000 kbps. If the file plays correctly, find out where the picture disappears—the StreamYard studio, YouTube Live Control Room, or the public watch page—and whether one or many viewers see the problem.
First identify where the screen is black
Check whether audio continues, where you see the black picture, and whether other viewers see it too. These clues help narrow down which part of the broadcast to investigate; they do not, by themselves, prove a cause.
- The local video is black: Check the file itself before investigating StreamYard or YouTube.
- The StreamYard studio preview is black: Consider a browser, device, firewall, or proxy issue, especially if the preview shows a spinning circle.
- The local video looks right but YouTube is black: Compare StreamYard’s output, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and the public watch page.
- Only some viewers report it: Ask whether they are on different devices and connections. YouTube distinguishes problems affecting one viewer from errors reported by many viewers on different connections.
- Many viewers report it: Check the outgoing stream, encoder errors, system load, and internet connection.
Check the prerecorded file and its encoding
StreamYard’s Pre-recorded Streaming guide specifies MP4 with H.264 video. Do not rely on the .mp4 extension alone: MP4 is a container, and the video inside can use a codec a browser does not support. StreamYard describes this codec issue in its guidance for long-form video sharing and video clips; that specific warning is not proof that every prerecorded-stream failure has the same cause.
- Play the exact file you uploaded on your computer. Confirm that it contains a visible picture and that the expected audio plays.
- Inspect the file’s actual container, video codec, audio codec, frame rate, and bitrate. If you are unsure how it was encoded, re-encode it using StreamYard’s recommended settings below.
- Upload the converted file and check its preview before starting the broadcast.
StreamYard says maximum file size and duration vary by plan. Check its current upload guidance and your plan for the applicable limits; exact limits can change.

Re-encode to StreamYard’s recommended settings
StreamYard’s video optimization guidance recommends these settings for prerecorded videos:
- Container: MP4
- Video: H.264 (x264)
- Audio: AAC
- Frame rate: Constant 30 fps
- Web Optimized: Enabled (Faststart)
- Align A/V: Enabled
- Total bitrate: Below 10,000 kbps (10 Mbps)
StreamYard recommends HandBrake for re-encoding. After conversion, verify that the exported file uses the settings above and that its total bitrate is below the recommended ceiling, then upload it again. StreamYard also says an excessive bitrate can cause lagging or freezing. These recommendations can help address file compatibility or playback problems, but StreamYard does not identify them as a guaranteed fix for every black picture.

If the StreamYard studio preview is black
StreamYard documents a black screen with a spinning circle when a firewall or proxy blocks connections required for studio camera and screen-share media. Its firewall and proxy guidance calls out work connections and work-provided devices as possible sources of restrictions. This applies to the studio’s camera and screen-share connection; it does not establish that a firewall is the cause of every black prerecorded broadcast.
- If you are on a work network or device, ask your administrator whether the required StreamYard connections are being blocked. Do not bypass workplace security controls without authorization.
- Check StreamYard’s device and browser requirements. Its onboarding guidance recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop.
- Check whether the black image is only in the studio preview or also appears in YouTube’s preview and on the public watch page. A studio-only problem points to a different stage than a video that is black for viewers.
If you are actually sharing your screen instead of uploading a prerecorded video, StreamYard documents a separate Chrome-on-Wayland black-screen issue when sharing the entire display on Linux. Its Linux and Wayland guidance describes a PipeWire capturer flag workaround. That screen-sharing issue is not a general fix for prerecorded uploads.

If the file is fine but YouTube viewers see black
YouTube’s live-stream encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder’s own output, the source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and outbound internet connection. Use those checks when the local file looks correct but the transmitted broadcast does not.
- Compare the StreamYard studio output with YouTube Live Control Room’s preview. Then check the public watch page, if the broadcast is live.
- Look for warnings or errors in YouTube’s Live Control Room and check whether the encoder’s own output shows video.
- Check the computer’s CPU load and outgoing connection if the workflow uses a local encoder. Ask viewers on different connections whether they see the same fault.
- If you use StreamYard’s native YouTube destination integration, do not change a server URL or stream key just because YouTube’s general encoder article describes those settings for encoder workflows. Change destination credentials only when the integration or YouTube indicates they are wrong.
YouTube recommends reporting continuing live-stream issues after checking the encoder. When contacting support, include when the problem occurs and which preview or viewers show it.

What to include when you ask for help
Give StreamYard or YouTube enough detail to locate the failing stage:
- The file’s container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Whether the local file plays with picture and sound, and whether audio continues during the black screen.
- Where the image first becomes black: local file, StreamYard studio, YouTube Live Control Room, or the public watch page.
- Whether one viewer or multiple viewers on different connections are affected.
- Any visible StreamYard or YouTube error, plus the device, browser, and network used.
