There is no single best live-stream setting. Match your bitrate to the platform’s recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then make sure your internet connection can sustain it. If frames drop, troubleshoot the connection and ingest path before increasing encoder quality. Latency is a separate trade-off, and on YouTube some latency options are unavailable at 4K.

Choose a bitrate for your platform, codec, and video settings

Bitrate controls how much data your video sends each second. Higher bitrates can preserve more detail, especially in fast-moving gameplay, but only if the connection can deliver them steadily. A platform’s recommended bitrate is a starting point—not proof that your particular connection can sustain it.

YouTube’s current recommended figures vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are platform recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or universal targets.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 recommendation AV1 or H.265 recommendation
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 50 Mbps 35 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations; consult the destination’s current guidance for other platforms. Twitch’s official broadcasting material covers bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and encoder choices, but the numerical settings are not established here, so don’t assume YouTube’s figures apply to Twitch.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pick resolution and frame rate before setting bitrate

Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the game, the footage, and the connection you can sustain. For fast-moving games, 60 fps may better preserve motion; a lower resolution or frame rate can be a sensible trade if your connection cannot reliably carry the corresponding recommended bitrate. Keep the stream within the destination’s supported limits.

If you change codec, check the platform’s recommendation again: YouTube’s listed values differ between H.264 and AV1/H.265. YouTube supports those codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingest and accepts up to 60 fps.

Leave room for a variable connection

Run an upload-speed test, but don’t treat a single result as your stable streaming capacity. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, while stressing that stable upload and the platform’s bitrate limits matter. This is a heuristic, not a formula that overrides the destination’s settings or guarantees a clean stream.

If other people or devices share the connection, their traffic can compete with the stream. Test under conditions resembling your actual broadcast, and choose a bitrate that holds up rather than one that only works during an idle speed test.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live

For YouTube, use the destination’s published encoder requirements rather than copying an arbitrary preset. Its guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and a keyframe interval no longer than 4 seconds. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data to and through Google’s servers.

  • Bitrate mode: CBR.
  • Keyframes: every 2 seconds as recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: no more than 60 fps for YouTube Live.
  • Transport: use RTMPS where your encoder and destination configuration support it.
  • Codec and bitrate: use the YouTube recommendation for your selected resolution and frame rate.

Set the stream key in your encoder’s streaming configuration and use the matching destination ingest settings. Treat the stream key like a password: don’t publish it or share it. Use the destination’s current stream setup flow to obtain or select the key; exact interface labels can change.

Choose latency with quality and resolution in mind

Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, which matters when you’re responding to chat or coordinating with viewers. The available options are platform-specific and can constrain quality settings. On YouTube, low latency is not available for 4K/2160p streams; YouTube delivers those at normal latency.

Choose a latency mode in the destination’s live-stream settings based on how quickly you need viewer interaction and which resolutions the platform permits with that mode. Don’t reduce resolution or quality just to chase a lower delay unless that trade suits the broadcast. Confirm the available choices in the platform’s current setup screen.

Test the full setup before going live

A successful connection test alone does not prove the stream will hold up during gameplay. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the broadcast.

  1. Set the intended profile. Choose the platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and latency mode you plan to use.
  2. Check upload capacity. Run an upload-speed test and make sure the selected bitrate is sustainable on the connection you’ll actually use.
  3. Run a representative test stream. Include gameplay or other motion, plus audio, rather than testing a static screen only.
  4. Check the platform’s stream health. Review warnings or status messages before relying on the stream for an event.
  5. Monitor while live. Keep an eye on stream health and destination messages so you can respond if delivery deteriorates.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable delivery

OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Work through the network path before assuming that raising bitrate or changing picture quality will fix it.

  1. Try a different ingest server. A poor route to one server can cause trouble even when the connection appears usable elsewhere. OBS notes that Windows users streaming to Twitch can use TwitchTest to identify servers with better quality scores.
  2. Lower the bitrate. Reduce it to a value that fits stable upload capacity and the destination’s limits. OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload-speed suggestion is a starting heuristic, not a universal target.
  3. Compare with another service. If practical, test whether the problem occurs with another destination. This can help establish whether the fault is service-specific.
  4. Check connection software. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, and bundled network software as possible sources of interference. Test with them disabled only when safe and appropriate, and restore protections afterward.
  5. Replace Wi-Fi with Ethernet as a test. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If Ethernet improves delivery, investigate the wireless link rather than compensating indefinitely with a lower-quality stream.
  6. Check network hardware and the ISP. If the issue persists, investigate the modem, router, and other network equipment, then contact your ISP. Congestion or changes on the ISP’s side may be outside your control.

When dynamic bitrate helps—and what it cannot do

OBS can lower bitrate dynamically when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce dropped frames. It does not remove the underlying connection problem, and the lower bitrate reduces image quality. Treat it as a fallback to protect continuity, not a substitute for diagnosing an unstable route or inadequate upload capacity.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a different option from optimizing a live gameplay or camera encoder: it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
