Amazon IVS can carry live auction video, but it does not supply the auction itself. Choose an IVS real-time stage when hosts and viewers need interactive, very low-latency participation; choose a low-latency channel when a host sends an encoder feed to a larger viewing audience. In either case, build bid handling, bidder identity, lot state, and auction rules into your application.
Choose the right Amazon IVS streaming mode
The key decision is whether the auction needs participants to interact through your application or mainly needs a host’s video delivered to viewers. AWS identifies live video auctions as a use case for IVS Real-Time Streaming. Its documentation describes real-time latency as under 300 milliseconds and low-latency channel delivery as under five seconds; these are service capability statements, not guarantees for every viewer or deployment. Actual latency varies with geography, network conditions, and the media chain.
| Option | Best fit | Latency described by AWS | Production path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real-time stage | Interactive auction experiences in which hosts and other participants publish or receive media through your application. | Under 300 milliseconds; observed results vary. | IVS real-time broadcast SDKs, including a web SDK for joining a stage, publishing and subscribing to media, and monitoring media and WebRTC statistics. |
| Low-latency channel | A host-led production that sends an encoder feed to a channel for an audience to watch. | Under five seconds; observed results vary. | Broadcast SDKs or an encoder using RTMPS, RTMP, or SRT; AWS documents an OBS setup workflow. |
For the lowest possible latency on channel playback, AWS recommends the IVS Player; third-party HLS players are not supported for that goal. A stage can also be broadcast to a channel so that channel viewers receive low-latency playback. AWS describes real-time stages as supporting up to 12 hosts and audiences beyond 25,000 viewers, subject to service quotas. Treat those as documented capabilities, not a capacity promise for your specific event; verify current quotas and plan the application accordingly.
Design auction timing around what viewers actually see
Video delay is only one part of bid timing. Different viewers can see a frame at different times, and AWS notes that geography, network type and speed, and components in the streaming chain affect observed latency. Do not assume that a countdown reaching zero on the host’s screen means every viewer saw the same moment simultaneously.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Make your application—not the video stream—the authority for whether a bid is accepted.
- Define and display clear deadlines and accepted-bid confirmations in the application.
- Measure end-to-end behavior in the regions and network conditions relevant to your audience, then set timing and user messaging based on those observations.
These are application-design recommendations arising from variable stream latency; IVS documentation does not prescribe auction rules or bid-acceptance policies. You must implement the lot state, bidder identity, bid validation and ordering, and the auction’s rules yourself.
Set up a host-to-channel stream with OBS
For a straightforward host-led feed, create and configure an IVS low-latency channel, then use an encoder such as OBS to send video to its ingest endpoint. AWS documents RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT for channel ingest and provides OBS setup instructions. RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection. Use the channel’s ingest details and stream key in the encoder; treat the key as a secret, and use the correct channel credentials for the event.

- Create the channel and retrieve its ingest details. In the Amazon IVS console, create a low-latency channel and use its ingest endpoint and stream key in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that channel.
- Configure OBS for the channel. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the applicable custom server or service configuration, and enter the IVS ingest endpoint and stream key. Choose RTMPS where available for an encrypted ingest connection. Confirm that the selected protocol and channel configuration are compatible.
- Set the video output to fit the channel. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the channel supports and your uplink can sustain. There is no single correct bitrate for every auction: account for the channel’s configured limits, motion in the scene, and available upload bandwidth. Test the exact encoder profile before the live event.
- Set the keyframe interval. AWS’s OBS setup guidance recommends a two-second interval. AWS’s general configuration guidance discusses one-second keyframes as an option to reduce startup latency, while noting possible adaptive-bitrate trade-offs such as resolution switching or buffering. Follow the requirements of your chosen channel configuration and test viewer playback before changing the interval.
- Start the encoder and verify playback. Confirm that IVS receives the feed and check it with the intended playback path, preferably the IVS Player when lowest possible channel latency matters. Test from more than one relevant network or location if your audience is geographically distributed.
For a product that embeds the auction experience and needs hosts or viewers to join and publish media through the application, use the IVS real-time broadcast SDK rather than treating an OBS channel as a complete interactive auction system. The web SDK supports stage participation, publishing and subscribing, and monitoring media and WebRTC statistics. A host using an SDK needs access to a camera and microphone; AWS does not specify a required webcam or microphone model.
Plan recording as a separate feature
Real-time stages support recording individual participants or a composite recording to Amazon S3. Choose individual files when you need separate participant sources; choose a composite when a combined recording better suits playback or editing workflows. Recording is not automatic evidence that an auction was conducted lawfully or that a recording satisfies any jurisdiction’s evidentiary requirements.

- The stage, storage configuration, and S3 bucket must be in the same AWS Region for real-time recording to S3.
- Costs include S3 storage and requests; composite recording also incurs video encoding charges. Check current AWS pricing for the regions and configuration you plan to use.
- AWS warns that network problems can cause recording data loss and recommends local recording as redundancy when a complete record matters.
Account for auction operations beyond video
IVS provides a managed video path, not an auction engine. Before opening bidding, decide how your application will authenticate bidders, validate and order bids, represent the active lot, announce accepted bids, handle ties or late submissions, and recover from disconnections. Also check the laws and business obligations that apply to the auction, including bidder verification, payments, and record retention; requirements depend on jurisdiction and auction type.
