For more control over formats and output location, yt-dlp is the clearest command-line choice covered here; Streamlink is chiefly a way to play supported streams in a video player, not a VOD library manager. These workflows are for existing archived video-on-demand (VOD), not recording a broadcast that is still live. Only save copies when you have the rights and platform permission.
Choose a route based on where the replay is

No route guarantees access to every replay. Platform availability, archive settings, permissions, and the downloader’s support for the site all matter.
Download a Twitch Past Broadcast
Twitch describes Past Broadcasts as recordings of past streams. The broadcaster must have enabled Past Broadcast storage for a recording to be available. Twitch’s video menu provides an option to download a video or export it to YouTube.
- Sign in to the Twitch account that has access to the broadcast.
- Open the channel’s video area and locate the Past Broadcast.
- Open the video’s menu and choose the download option, or choose export to YouTube if that is your intended destination.
- Check the resulting file and save or move it into the archive location you want to use.
If the Past Broadcast is missing, check whether storage was enabled and whether the recording is still available to that account. A third-party downloader cannot restore a VOD that the platform no longer makes available.

Save a YouTube livestream replay
YouTube says a channel “may be provided with the option of archiving” live content for later viewing; this is not a guarantee that every livestream will have a replay. For your own stream, check YouTube Studio for an available replay and use the platform’s offered download or export route where available. The precise availability of a download option can depend on the video and account.
YouTube’s live-stream terms require content providers to have the necessary rights for content they stream, including music licensing rights. Owning the recording does not automatically grant permission to redistribute music or other third-party material included in it. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and verify the applicable permissions before making or sharing a local copy.

Use yt-dlp when you need format and file-path control
yt-dlp is a command-line audio/video downloader. Its documentation covers format selection, choosing an output path, and merging separate video and audio streams with FFmpeg. The formats it can offer vary by site and by the information exposed through that site’s extractor; do not assume every replay has the same quality or format choices.
- Install yt-dlp using the method documented for your operating system, and install FFmpeg if you need to merge separate audio and video streams.
- Confirm you can access the replay in a browser while signed into an account with permission to view it.
- Run
yt-dlp -F "VIDEO_URL"to inspect the formats yt-dlp can retrieve for that URL. - Choose an available format or use yt-dlp’s default selection. For a specific listed format, use
yt-dlp -f FORMAT_ID "VIDEO_URL", replacingFORMAT_IDwith an ID shown by the format listing. - To set a save location and filename pattern, use
yt-dlp -o "/path/to/archive/%(title)s.%(ext)s" "VIDEO_URL". Replace the path with a writable folder on your system. - After the download, play the file and check its audio, video, and duration before deleting or moving any other copy.
Consult the yt-dlp documentation for current installation, format-selector, output-template, and FFmpeg guidance. Site changes can affect extractor support, and a format listed by one site is not evidence that the same format exists on another.

Use Streamlink for supported-stream playback
Streamlink’s documented workflow sends a supported stream to a video player such as VLC. Its overview lists Twitch and YouTube support, and its quickstart explains selecting a stream quality. That makes it useful when you want to open a supported stream in a player; the documentation does not position it as a dedicated tool for managing an archive of VOD files.
- Install Streamlink and a compatible player, such as VLC, following the project’s current documentation.
- Use the documented command format for the supported service and video URL.
- Choose a quality that appears in Streamlink’s available stream list, then open it in the player.
See the Streamlink documentation for current commands and supported services. If the goal is a saved VOD file with format and output-path control, yt-dlp is the more direct fit in this guide.

Plan storage for a growing archive
A downloaded replay becomes a local storage commitment. The file size depends on the broadcast’s duration and quality, while the space you need also depends on how long you retain recordings. Choose an output folder with enough free capacity and periodically check the archive before starting long downloads. External storage is optional, not a prerequisite; add it only if your archive outgrows the space available on your device.
Fix common download problems
- The replay does not appear: Check that the platform archived the broadcast, that it remains available, and that the signed-in account can access it. Twitch Past Broadcast storage must have been enabled.
- yt-dlp shows no usable formats or fails to retrieve the video: Confirm the URL is valid and accessible to you, update yt-dlp according to its documentation, and check whether the site’s current extractor supports the page. Format availability depends on information the site exposes.
- The downloaded file has no audio or video: The site may have provided separate streams. Install or configure FFmpeg as yt-dlp documents so it can merge them, then inspect the available formats again.
- The output cannot be saved: Check that the destination folder exists, the path is written correctly, and your account has permission and available disk space.
- Streamlink will not open the replay: Confirm the service and URL are supported by its current documentation and select a quality actually listed for the stream. Its playback workflow is not a guarantee that every archived VOD can be retrieved as a local file.
