Recommended Free Tools
There is no single best streaming software for every PC creator. Choose OBS Studio for flexible, free local production; Streamlabs Desktop for an integrated creator toolkit; Riverside for a hosted studio, guests, and recording workflows; and Restream when distributing one stream to multiple destinations is the priority. These tools overlap, but they are not all substitutes: you can produce a stream in OBS and send it through Restream, for example.
This is a feature-based comparison of official product documentation, not a hands-on test. It does not establish which app is easiest, most reliable, or fastest on a particular PC.
Which streaming software should you choose?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why it fits | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control over scenes, sources, audio, transitions, and recording without a subscription | OBS Studio | Its documented production tools include scene composition, audio filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode, plugins, and scripts. | Supported OS version, hardware, network, and encoder settings for your setup. |
| Desktop streaming with integrated layouts, overlays, alerts, chat, and creator utilities | Streamlabs Desktop | It combines a desktop app with a creator-oriented toolkit and is built on the OBS engine. | Whether a feature you want is free or requires Ultra; terms can change. |
| Hosted studio, remote participants, recording, or audience-facing event workflows | Riverside | Its product offering emphasizes hosted creator and studio workflows alongside live streaming. | Which plan currently includes the guest, recording, destination, or event feature you need. |
| Sending a stream to multiple destinations, including from another encoder | Restream | It supports third-party software such as OBS as well as its own browser Studio. | Destination count and type, branding, Studio limits, and paid features. |
These are workflow recommendations, not a measured ranking. If the main job is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream live around the clock, that is a different use case from producing a live PC game session; see StreamNeo below.
How the four products differ
OBS Studio: local production and control
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming. Its official feature list includes scenes and sources, transitions, an audio mixer with per-source filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode, Multiview, and plugin and script extensibility. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The official download page lists Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 13.0 or newer; it also provides Linux distribution options. That page identifies version 32.2.2 and a release date of August 14, but the year was not displayed in the available release information, so check the current download page for the latest version and requirements.

OBS is a strong starting point if you want to build a scene from sources such as game capture, display or window capture, a webcam, and audio devices. A capture card is relevant when you need to bring in external video, such as console footage; it is not a routine requirement for capturing a game running on the PC itself.
Streamlabs Desktop: OBS-based app with creator tools
Streamlabs describes its desktop app as a streaming and recording tool with customizable layouts and an integrated creator toolkit. Its FAQ says the app is built on the OBS engine and describes free core use. Streamlabs presents multistreaming, premium overlays, and additional features as Ultra benefits. Do not assume Ultra is necessary for ordinary streaming: verify the current feature list and terms for the specific tool you want.

Riverside: hosted studio and creator workflows
Riverside’s pricing page presents live streaming and multistreaming within a hosted creator and studio offering. Its displayed Grow tier lists Full HD 1080p live streaming, unlimited destinations, and custom RTMP. That page is dynamic, so confirm which plan currently includes a required feature before choosing it. The published details cited here do not establish how Riverside’s local PC encoding performs compared with another encoder.
Restream: distribution to multiple destinations
Restream can accept a feed from third-party software such as OBS, and it also offers a browser-based Studio. Its help-center article dated February 9, 2026 says the free plan supports two channels, Studio in HD with up to five guests, multi-chat, analytics, and scheduled events. The same article says paid plans are required for three or more channels and for Facebook Pages, Groups, and custom RTMP destinations. Restream’s plan-help article dated February 9, 2026 lists destination limits of 2 for Free, 3 for Standard, 5 for Professional, 8 for Business, and 25+ for Enterprise. Plan names and limits can change, so verify them on Restream’s current plan information.

OBS vs. Streamlabs: which is better for PC gaming?
Choose OBS if you want direct control of production features and extensibility without paying for a subscription. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if its integrated creator utilities, layouts, overlays, or guided workflow match what you need. The available official feature information does not establish a universal winner for ease of use, performance, or stream quality. Both choices still depend on your PC, network, encoder configuration, and destination.
How to make the choice
- Decide what you are doing. For a live game session, prioritize capture, scenes, audio, and encoder control. For a guest interview or hosted event, assess the studio, guest, recording, and event workflow. For one feed sent to several platforms, check distribution and destination limits.
- Count destinations and verify eligibility. Check how many channels must receive the stream simultaneously and whether they require custom RTMP or account types with special eligibility. A published destination cap does not guarantee that every destination type is available on every plan.
- Separate production from distribution. OBS or Streamlabs can be the desktop production app; Restream can receive a feed and distribute it. Riverside’s hosted studio is a different workflow. You may combine tools rather than treating all four as mutually exclusive.
- Check the actual plan feature. Confirm whether a needed multistream, overlay, guest, recording, or event feature is included in the plan and region you intend to use. Pricing and packaging change; no comparable current prices for all four products are established here.
- Test your own setup. Run a private or unlisted test where available, check game and microphone audio, confirm the correct destination and scene, and watch for dropped frames or other issues before a public session.
Basic OBS setup for a PC stream
OBS is the most flexible starting point in this comparison for a conventional local PC gaming stream. The OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard and explicitly encourages a short test before the first live stream or recording.

- Install a supported build. Download OBS from the official OBS download page and check the current system requirements for your operating system.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Open OBS and use the wizard to configure an initial setup for streaming or recording. Treat the result as a starting point, not a guarantee that it suits every game or network.
- Add the picture source. Add a game capture source for a PC game, or use display/window capture when that better fits what you need to show. Add a webcam or capture card only if you need that input.
- Set up audio. Select the intended desktop and microphone devices, then check the mixer while the game and microphone are active. Add per-source filters only where needed and listen to a test recording or stream.
- Connect the destination. In OBS’s stream settings, select the service and authenticate as supported, or choose a custom RTMP service and enter the server and stream key supplied by that platform. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on stream, share it, or leave it in a public recording. If it is exposed, reset it through the destination platform.
- Check output and run a test. Use the wizard’s recommended settings as a baseline, then confirm resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate against the platform’s current guidance and your upload connection. The official material summarized here does not establish one bitrate or encoder setting that is correct for every PC, game, resolution, and destination.
- Preview before going live. Check that the correct game, scene, microphone, and destination are selected. The OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide says: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.”
Copyright and platform rules still apply
Streaming software does not grant rights to game footage, music, video clips, or other media, and a multistreaming service does not override a platform’s rules. Before broadcasting, check the rules of the destination and confirm you have permission to use music, overlays, clips, or other material that is not yours. For a YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos rather than a live PC session, also consider copyright and reused-content issues; StreamNeo provides a copyright safety checklist. Review the relevant platform policies for your own channel and content.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a better fit than leaving OBS or a gaming PC running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.
