To start a cooking channel with live streams, choose a format you can manage, confirm that your YouTube channel is eligible to go live, and rehearse the full setup privately before inviting viewers. A phone or webcam is enough for a simple show; an encoder is useful when you need more control over cameras, audio, or overlays.
Choose a format that fits your cooking show
Build each stream around a manageable idea, such as one recipe, a technique demonstration, or a meal-prep session. Explain what you are doing as you cook and leave pauses to answer questions in chat. These are programming ideas, not platform requirements.

Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s stated requirements are that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days, and the streamer is at least 16 years old. Review YouTube’s current eligibility and setup instructions before scheduling. The age and restriction rules are YouTube platform requirements, not general rules for every streaming service.

Prepare the cooking space and camera view
The camera should show the work that matters: ingredients, the work surface, and preparation steps that viewers might otherwise miss. If it suits your format, compose the shot to include your face as well. An overhead phone mount is one possible way to frame the counter, but it is optional; YouTube does not require a particular mount or camera arrangement.
Google’s Live Streaming Guide recommends testing internet connection, camera framing, audio capture, and lighting together as a private stream in YouTube Studio. Apply that checklist to the kitchen: check whether light reaches the food without making the image hard to see, and whether viewers can understand you over fans, chopping, or other kitchen sounds. These cooking-specific checks adapt the guide’s general preparation advice.

Rehearse before inviting viewers
- Confirm eligibility. Check channel verification and live-stream access in YouTube Studio before planning the event.
- Set the event details. Decide on a clear recipe or session, title, and start time. Schedule the stream if you want viewers to know when to arrive.
- Test the entire scene privately. Check the internet connection, camera framing, audio capture, and lighting together in YouTube Studio, as Google’s checklist recommends.
- Run through the recipe on camera. Make sure key actions remain visible and that explanations are understandable while you work. Use representative movement and sound if you are streaming through an encoder.
- Plan for chat. Decide how you will read comments without losing track of cooking. If you have help, arrange for a moderator; otherwise consider whether chat should be limited or turned off for parts that demand your attention.
- Check the stream before and during the event. For encoder workflows, review YouTube’s stream-health information and do a rehearsal before going live.

Configure an encoder stream for YouTube
If you use an encoder, first choose a quality your internet connection can reliably sustain. Test upload speed and prioritize a stable rehearsal over the highest available resolution. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends constant bitrate encoding with a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds).

There is no single bitrate that fits every cooking stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the current tables in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide to choose the applicable settings rather than copying a universal number. Rehearse with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health during the live event.
Keep the stream focused and manageable
- Tell viewers what you are making and what they will see, then narrate the steps that are easiest to miss on camera.
- Keep ingredients and tools arranged so you can work without repeatedly leaving the frame.
- Make time for questions at natural pauses rather than trying to read every comment while handling a task.
- Use a moderator if one is available; Google’s checklist also recommends having a plan for chat and comments, including moderation or turning comments off where appropriate.
