Black Myth: Wukong makes a forceful first impression in its opening stretch: previewers found fast, demanding staff combat, frequent boss fights and striking early scenery. They also found the areas they played relatively linear. Those impressions come from short, pre-release hands-ons—not a verdict on the finished game as a whole.
What is Black Myth: Wukong?
Game Science describes Black Myth: Wukong as an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and adapted from the classic novel Journey to the West. The developer says familiarity with the novel can add context and surprises, but is not required to enjoy the game. Game Science’s June 2024 announcement set the global release for August 20, 2024, and listed PC and PS5 storefronts at that time. That announcement is historical; check regional storefronts for current availability.
What did the first two hours feel like?
The available hands-on accounts describe a concentrated opening built around learning combat and facing bosses, rather than a broad survey of the full game. PC Gamer’s Morgan Park wrote about a two-hour Summer Game Fest demo set in Black Wind Mountain. PCGamesN’s Cameron Bald separately reported on a two-hour hands-on. Their experiences overlap in broad strokes, but they are individual impressions of early sections, not controlled comparisons or full-game assessments.
How does combat work?
In Park’s demo, the staff is central to a compact moveset that combines attacks, dodging and spells with cooldowns. Light attacks build Focus, which can then be spent on heavy attacks. Bald likewise found the combat fast and initially difficult; he said the light-combo-and-Focus loop helped it click as he played.

Both accounts describe a system that expects players to respond actively rather than rely on a broad arsenal from the outset. Park’s report also emphasizes frequent, challenging boss encounters. That makes the early learning curve part of the experience: players must get comfortable with the timing and tools they have while confronting demanding opponents.
Is Black Myth: Wukong a Soulslike?
The previews support describing the opening as challenging and boss-centered, but they do not establish a definitive genre comparison. Park’s account specifically discusses staff attacks, dodging, cooldown spells and Focus-building combos; Bald also describes fast combat that takes time to learn. Those details are more useful than assigning a label based on a short demo. The two-hour accounts do not settle how the full game’s systems, progression or encounter design compare with other action RPGs.

How impressive are the visuals—and how open are the areas?
Both previewers found the early forest and mountain scenery visually appealing. That strong presentation came with a caveat: Park described Black Wind Mountain’s paths as narrow, with trails and invisible boundaries, while Bald characterized the area he played as linear. These are observations about the early sections covered in their hands-ons, not evidence that every region follows the same pattern.
For players hoping to roam freely and discover many branching paths, the opening reports suggest measured expectations. In the sections they saw, traversal felt more guided than expansive, with combat and encounters taking priority.

What does “first two hours” mean?
It refers to the length of particular hands-on sessions, not a complete assessment or an estimate of the game’s total length. PC Gamer’s two hours were spent with a pre-release Summer Game Fest demo focused on Black Wind Mountain. PCGamesN also reported a two-hour hands-on, but neither account establishes how representative its section is of later chapters.
The reports can tell readers how those opening areas felt to those writers: visually striking, challenging and relatively constrained in their traversal. They cannot determine whether boss variety, exploration, pacing or combat remain compelling across the full game.

Can you try it for two hours on PS5?
PlayStation’s UK store listing identifies a PS5 version and a two-hour full-game trial for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. The trial is tied to that subscription tier and UK listing; availability and terms can vary by region or change, so check the relevant PlayStation Store page before relying on it. This full-game trial is separate from the two-hour pre-release demo sessions described by the preview writers.
