Yes. OBS Studio is a capable, free option for recording YouTube videos locally, whether you are capturing gameplay, a tutorial, or narration. It offers control over video, audio, encoders, recording quality, and file format. The trade-off is that you must choose settings that suit your computer and editing workflow: higher quality can mean larger files and more system load.
What OBS is good at—and what to consider
OBS can record to a local file on its own or while you stream. The OBS Project describes it as a tool for both live broadcasting and offline recording in its Standard Recording Output Guide. That flexibility makes it useful for gameplay capture, screen recordings, and voice-over videos, but it also means there are settings to learn.
- Good fit: You want control over scenes, sources, audio inputs, recording quality, and output format.
- Consider another workflow: You want a recorder with almost no configuration, or your computer struggles to capture and encode the material you need.
- Before an important recording: Make a short test using representative gameplay or screen activity. Check the result in your editor and watch for dropped frames, audio problems, or unexpectedly large files.
OBS provides settings, not a guarantee of a particular result. Performance depends on your hardware, encoder, content, and chosen quality.
Choose a recording quality and output mode
In OBS, open Settings > Output and choose Simple or Advanced for Output Mode. The OBS Project’s Overview Guide recommends Simple mode when you do not need detailed controls. Advanced mode is useful when you need separate recording controls or multiple audio tracks.

Simple mode
The recording quality choices include Same as stream, High Quality, Indistinguishable Quality, and Lossless Quality. Choose a quality that your storage and computer can handle, rather than defaulting to the highest option. Higher quality can increase file size; a separate recording encoder can also add system load.
Lossless is rarely a practical default for a typical YouTube workflow. OBS says this preset uses the CPU encoder and creates extremely large files; its guide estimates around 7 GB per minute for the Lossless preset. Treat that as the guide’s estimate, not a guaranteed file size for every recording. See the Recording Encoder Presets Guide.

Advanced mode
Advanced mode exposes encoder-specific controls, including constant-quality settings for available encoders such as NVENC, x264, AMD, and QuickSync. OBS publishes baseline ranges in its Advanced Recording Settings Guide; these are starting points, not universal prescriptions. In the guide’s constant-quality scales, lower values mean higher quality and larger files. Which encoder is available and how well it performs depends on your computer.
Do not copy a setting just because it worked for someone else’s machine. Record a short sample of the sort of game or screen content you plan to publish, then inspect image detail, motion, audio sync, file size, and editing performance. If recording causes stutter, try a less demanding quality setting or an available hardware encoder; if the file is too large, adjust quality and retest.

Set up video and audio for the recording
Video dimensions and frame rate
Set your canvas and output resolution in Settings > Video to match the material you intend to record and edit. Avoid upscaling low-resolution footage just to create a larger file. For a finished YouTube upload, YouTube recommends progressive video and uploading at the same frame rate at which the video was recorded. Its recommended upload encoding settings list 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for computer viewing, while YouTube says its player adapts to other aspect ratios.
Audio sources and tracks
OBS can capture a microphone or auxiliary audio device as well as other audio sources. Select the intended devices under Settings > Audio, or configure them as sources in your scene, and make a test recording to confirm levels and synchronization. An external microphone is optional; whether one is useful depends on your existing equipment and whether the video needs voice capture.

If your editor benefits from separate audio tracks—for example, gameplay audio and narration on different tracks—configure the tracks in Advanced Output and ensure the relevant sources are assigned to them. Then verify the saved file in the editor: choosing multiple tracks in OBS does not by itself ensure that your editing workflow handles them as intended.

For many local recordings, OBS recommends MKV. If a recording is interrupted unexpectedly, an unfinished MKV can remain playable and recoverable, unlike a recording container that may be left unusable when writing is interrupted. The drawback is that some editing programs have weaker MKV support.

If your editor or another destination prefers a different container, use OBS’s built-in remuxing option rather than risking a recording by writing directly to a less interruption-resilient format. The OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide describes MKV, hybrid and fragmented MP4/MOV variants, and the compatibility trade-offs. Check your target editor’s support for the container and codecs you choose.
- Record to MKV if you want the resilience OBS recommends for many recording workflows.
- When you need another container, open File > Remux Recordings in OBS, choose the recording and the output file, then start remuxing.
- Open the remuxed file in your editor and confirm that video, audio, and any separate tracks work before deleting the original.
Make the file upload-ready for YouTube
OBS’s local recording settings and YouTube’s upload recommendations answer different questions. YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, and the same frame rate used in recording. Its current upload page also lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio as audio codec options, with a 48 kHz sample rate.

These figures are YouTube upload recommendations, not required OBS recording bitrates. If you record to MKV, remuxing to MP4 changes the container; it is not a substitute for checking that your codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio meet the needs of your editor and upload.
Common recording problems and fixes
- The game or desktop stutters in the recording: The encoder or recording settings may be too demanding for the computer. Test a less demanding quality setting or another available encoder, and check whether the issue occurs in a short representative capture.
- The recording file is much larger than expected: A high-quality or Lossless setting can consume substantial storage. Select a less demanding quality level and make a new test; do not assume a particular file size without testing your content.
- Your editor will not open the recording: Check whether it supports the recording’s container and codecs. Use File > Remux Recordings to create a container your editor accepts, then test that file.
- Narration or game audio is missing or on the wrong track: Check the selected devices and track assignments in OBS, then make and inspect a fresh sample recording.
- The uploaded video looks different from the local file: Confirm the output resolution, frame rate, and upload encoding settings. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations apply to uploads, not directly to OBS’s recording controls.
