You can go live with a stable internet connection and a device or software encoder that sends video to your platform. A phone or console may handle both jobs; a computer setup usually needs broadcasting software such as OBS. A dedicated camera, microphone, lights, capture card, and control pad are optional upgrades—not a mandatory shopping list.

The essentials: a source, an encoder, and a reliable connection

Your source is what viewers see and hear: a game, camera, phone, or other video input. An encoder packages that audio and video for delivery to the streaming platform. The encoder can be built into a phone or console, run as software on a computer, or be a separate hardware device. You also need a stable internet connection, especially upload capacity that can sustain your chosen stream settings.

Twitch’s official beginner FAQ says, “All you need to start streaming is a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video to the internet, also known as a video encoder.” It gives a console, mobile app, and software such as OBS as examples. That is a useful baseline: buy equipment to solve a real need in your format, not because every streaming setup list includes it.

Choose the setup that fits your game and workflow

Phone or tablet

A mobile app can use the device’s camera and microphone and encode the stream itself. This is a simple route for a mobile game or an on-camera stream. An external microphone or camera is only necessary if the built-in options do not deliver the result you want.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Console streaming

A supported console can broadcast directly, so a capture card is not essential for native console streaming. Add a capture card if you need the console’s video and audio to enter a separate computer—for example, to combine gameplay with other video sources or a composed software scene. A capture card routes a signal; it does not replace the computer, encoder, or connection needed for that separate workflow.

Computer and broadcasting software

For a PC game stream, a computer runs the game and broadcasting software such as OBS. The software can encode the stream and combine sources, such as gameplay, a webcam, and overlays. The PC must handle the game and broadcasting workload at the same time. There is no single universal hardware specification: what is sufficient depends on the game, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and other work running on the computer.

Hardware encoder

A hardware encoder is another way to send a source to a platform. It can suit a workflow where a separate dedicated device handles encoding, but it is not automatically needed for a beginner. Compare options by how easily they capture your source, whether they can combine your inputs, and how much live control you need.

Which accessories are actually useful?

Equipment When it helps Is it required?
Microphone Useful when commentary, conversation, or clear spoken interaction is part of the stream. A USB microphone for streaming is one possible category, not a requirement or a product endorsement. No. Twitch’s FAQ does not require one, though Elgato includes a microphone in its basic setup guidance.
Webcam or dedicated camera Use one when you want viewers to see you. A dedicated webcam can replace or supplement a built-in camera depending on your setup. No. Skip it if your content does not need a face-camera view.
Lighting Can improve the appearance of an on-camera scene, particularly when room lighting is poor. No. It is an optional production upgrade.
Capture card Routes a console or camera signal into a separate computer for a software-based workflow. No. It is conditional on your signal-routing needs; native console broadcasting does not require one.
Physical stream controls Can make live operation easier when you often switch scenes or trigger actions. No. Add controls only if they simplify your workflow.

Elgato’s setup guidance describes a microphone as part of a basic stream setup, while Twitch’s FAQ says a microphone and camera are not mandatory. The distinction is between a helpful voice setup and a platform requirement. Let your content decide: a gameplay stream with commentary benefits from a mic; a stream that does not rely on speech may not.

Set video and audio for a stable stream

Pick a resolution and frame rate your computer or encoder can produce while your connection can reliably upload. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following video bitrates. These are platform recommendations for the specified codec and format, not guarantees that any particular connection will sustain them.

Codec Format YouTube-recommended video bitrate
H.264 1080p30 14 Mbps (YouTube guidance accessed 2026)
H.264 1080p60 17 Mbps (YouTube guidance accessed 2026)
AV1 or H.265 1080p30 10 Mbps (YouTube guidance accessed 2026)
AV1 or H.265 1080p60 12 Mbps (YouTube guidance accessed 2026)

These figures are video bitrates, not a promise that your internet plan or Wi-Fi will deliver an uninterrupted stream. Measure upload performance under realistic conditions and leave room for fluctuations and other network use. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings, lower the bitrate or target quality rather than accepting recurring interruptions.

YouTube’s published live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR (constant bitrate), two-second recommended keyframes, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Device, software, and platform support varies, so use only combinations your encoder and destination support.

Preflight before going public

  1. Check your upload stability. Measure the connection you will actually use, not only a best-case result. If possible, use wired networking; OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable.
  2. Choose a sustainable target. Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the encoder’s capabilities and your available upload headroom. Use the platform’s current encoder guidance as a reference, then test.
  3. Connect the platform and encoder. Follow the platform’s current live setup flow and enter its stream key in the encoder when required. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on stream or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the platform’s live settings.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test where the platform allows it. Check that viewers can hear the game and microphone at balanced levels, see the intended sources, and get smooth motion. Test with the kind of movement and audio your real stream will contain.
  5. Watch stream health while testing. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or an inability to keep up with the selected bitrate. Lower the bitrate if the issue persists, and retest before going public.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • Dropped frames: The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the bitrate. Try wired networking, reduce bitrate, and test again.
  • Choppy gameplay or encoding overload: The computer may be struggling to run the game and encode simultaneously. Reduce the stream’s resolution or frame rate, or adjust the encoder workload; reassess the game load as well.
  • No video from a console in the computer: Check the capture-card signal path, selected video source, and that the device is connected and recognized. If you only need a native console broadcast, use the console’s direct streaming option instead.
  • Viewers cannot hear commentary: Check that the intended microphone is selected in the encoder and that its input level is active. Make a test recording or private test to confirm the game and voice levels before the public stream.
  • Stream key rejected or stream not starting: Confirm that you copied the current key for the correct channel and entered it in the encoder’s stream settings. Do not share the key; reset it on the platform if it may have been exposed.

Respect platform rules and rights

Equipment and correct encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted games, music, video, or other material. Check the streaming platform’s current rules and the rights that apply to the content you plan to show, including background music. YouTube also applies its own monetization and reused-content rules; permission to stream something and eligibility to monetize it are separate questions. Avoid assuming that a long loop or rebroadcast is allowed simply because the video can be transmitted.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube rather than stream live gameplay or a camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera broadcast service.
