For most people who want to stream and save a local recording at the same time, OBS Studio is the best place to start. It is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with scene-based production and audio mixing. If you need isolated camera recordings (ISO) or separate audio tracks, compare paid production software such as Wirecast Pro.

Best live streaming software that records: quick comparison

Software Best fit Recording and production notes Cost information
OBS Studio Most creators who want a free, flexible stream-and-record setup Supports scenes built from mixed sources and an audio mixer. Officially supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Project No software price.
Wirecast More complex productions, especially workflows needing ISO or multitrack audio Wirecast Pro lists ISO recording and multitrack audio recording; the product workflow also lists cameras, screen capture, IP cameras, audio devices, and other inputs. Telestream Wirecast Wirecast Studio is listed at $59 monthly or $34 per month billed annually; Pro is listed at $79 monthly or $42 per month billed annually. These vendor-listed prices are a snapshot and may change.
Streamlabs Desktop Creators evaluating a creator-focused workflow Its support guidance covers system requirements, but the available information does not establish a current recording-feature comparison. Current pricing and recording feature details are not stated in the cited support guidance. Streamlabs system requirements
vMix Production users comparing higher-tier capabilities Its edition comparison indicates recording in higher tiers and up to 4096 × 2160 in higher editions; the available comparison does not establish exact limits for each tier. vMix edition comparison Not stated in the cited comparison details.

How to choose software for streaming and recording

Choose based on what you need to save

A single local recording of the finished program is different from recording each camera separately or saving separate audio tracks. OBS is a capable starting point for a composed program. Wirecast Pro is worth comparing if your workflow needs ISO camera recording or multitrack audio; those features are listed for Pro, rather than established here for every Wirecast edition.

Match the software to the production

For scenes mixing a game, camera, overlays, and audio sources, OBS offers scene-based production and an audio mixer. Wirecast lists a broader set of production inputs, including cameras, screen capture, IP cameras, and audio devices. Check each vendor’s current documentation against the devices and workflow you actually use before buying.

Check your computer and storage

Streaming and recording compete for system resources. OBS cautions that meeting compatible system requirements does not guarantee successful streaming or recording: encoder choice, output settings, and scene complexity affect performance. Its system-requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, so verify current platform support rather than relying on old minimum-version details. OBS system requirements

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Streamlabs’ guidance, in an article updated 2026-04-08, gives 8 GB RAM as a minimum and recommends 16 GB or more for resource-intensive streaming configurations. It also gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms; that is Streamlabs guidance, not a guarantee for every platform or setup. Streamlabs system requirements

For local multitrack ISO capture and replay, Wirecast recommends a high-speed SSD or fast RAID array. For any local recording, make sure the drive has enough capacity and sustained write speed for the format and length you plan to capture; an external SSD is one category to investigate, not a guaranteed solution for every setup.

Getting started with OBS for a live stream and local recording

OBS is the strongest general starting point in this comparison, but exact menu labels and options can vary by operating system and release. Confirm the selected stream service and output settings in the version you install.

  1. Install OBS and create a scene. Download it from the official OBS Project site. Add the sources you need for the finished program, such as a game capture, display capture, camera, and audio devices. Arrange and test them in the preview.
  2. Configure the stream destination. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the streaming service, and connect your account or enter the stream key supplied by that service. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly.
  3. Set recording output. Open Settings → Output and review the streaming and recording sections. Select a recording location with sufficient free space, and choose a recording format and encoder supported by your system. If you need separate tracks, verify that your chosen software and setup actually capture them as intended.
  4. Set the video format. Under Settings → Video, choose a base canvas that matches your scene layout and an output resolution and frame rate your computer can sustain. Higher resolution or frame rate increases processing and storage demands; do a short local test before relying on a long session.
  5. Run a test recording and stream. Check game and microphone levels in the audio mixer, confirm the picture and sound in the saved file, and watch for dropped frames or encoder overload. A successful launch alone does not prove the system can sustain your chosen settings.
  6. Start both outputs and verify them. Start the stream and local recording, then confirm the live service receives the program and that the recording file is growing in the expected location. Afterward, play back the file and check audio sync, image quality, and completeness.

Troubleshooting common stream-and-record problems

  • Video stutters or frames are dropped: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and test a less demanding encoder configuration. Check that your connection can sustain the stream and that the system is not overloaded; the right fix depends on which resource is constrained.
  • The recording is incomplete or fails: Check the selected save location, available disk space, and whether the drive can sustain the write load. Multitrack and ISO capture can demand more storage performance than a single program file.
  • The recording has no microphone or game audio: Check the audio mixer and source routing, then make a short test recording and inspect the resulting file. Do not assume the stream mix and local recording tracks are configured identically.
  • The stream is live but no local file appears: Confirm that recording was started and that the recording path is the one you expect. Run a short test and play it back before beginning a long session.
  • The software opens but cannot maintain the desired quality: Compatible minimum hardware is not a performance guarantee. Lower the load by adjusting encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity, and retest.

Recording rights and platform rules matter

Software can capture a source without giving you permission to rebroadcast or publish it. Use game footage, music, overlays, and other material only in ways permitted by the relevant rights holders and platform rules. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before building a channel around repeated or reused material; no particular permission or monetization outcome is guaranteed by the choice of streaming software.
