How to Deliver a Live Video Stream with AWS Media Services

A practical guide to delivering live video with AWS: choose a source, encode with MediaLive, package or originate the output, and configure CloudFront for viewers.

For a typical AWS live-streaming workflow, send your live source to AWS Elemental MediaLive for real-time encoding, pass its output to AWS Elemental MediaPackage when you need packaging or related features such as DRM, then use Amazon CloudFront to deliver the stream to viewers. If MediaLive already produces every format your target players need, AWS documents MediaStore as an alternative origin. The right design depends on your source, player formats, latency goals, resilience needs, and audience traffic.

How the AWS live-streaming path fits together

A live service needs a source feed, an encoder, and a route from an origin to viewers. In AWS’s common reference architecture, MediaLive ingests and encodes two parallel feeds, MediaPackage prepares adaptive-bitrate outputs, and CloudFront distributes those outputs. That is a reference design, not a guarantee that every deployment is redundant or configured the same way.

  • Source contribution: Supplies the live video to AWS.
  • MediaLive: Encodes the source in real time and can create adaptive-bitrate outputs.
  • MediaPackage or MediaStore: MediaPackage can prepare output formats for different devices and support DRM. MediaStore is an origin option when MediaLive already generates the required formats.
  • CloudFront: Distributes the stream from the selected origin to viewers.

Choose formats for the actual player and device set rather than assuming one output is universal. AWS’s live reference solution uses HLS, DASH, and CMAF; AWS’s broader CloudFront guidance also lists Microsoft Smooth Streaming.

Choose how the live source will reach AWS

Start with the signal you have and how reliably it can be delivered. MediaLive’s workflow wizard supports several source paths, among them a MediaConnect flow, an AWS Elemental Link device, a mobile phone or webcam delivered over RTMP, and an MP4 file stored in S3 or on an HTTP server. These are supported wizard options, not an exhaustive list of every possible MediaLive configuration. MediaLive can also work with upstream systems that provide source content such as HLS or transport streams.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Existing contribution system: A MediaConnect flow or Elemental Link may fit a production that already uses those services or devices.
  • Phone or webcam: RTMP can carry a mobile-phone or webcam source through the wizard. A webcam is optional, not a universal requirement.
  • Stored video: An MP4 in S3 or an HTTP server is one wizard-supported input path, although a stored file is not itself a live camera feed.

Check the current AWS regional services list before designing around a particular service. AWS notes that MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific Regions; when MediaConnect supplies the input, the solution must use the same Region as that flow.

Build the workflow in the right order

  1. Confirm the source and destination players. Decide what sends the feed, what devices must play it, and whether the event needs a single input or parallel feeds for resilience.
  2. Ingest and encode with MediaLive. Configure the workflow around the selected input and the output formats the downstream system can accept. MediaLive performs real-time encoding; adaptive-bitrate outputs let playback adapt to viewer devices and network conditions.
  3. Select an output group and protocol for the next service. AWS documents HLS delivery to MediaPackage over HTTPS, RTMP output to a compatible server, and SRT caller or listener operation. A downstream service such as MediaConnect can handle encrypted SRT. Match the protocol to the receiver rather than choosing it in isolation.
  4. Package or originate the encoded output. Use MediaPackage when you need it to prepare formats for different playback devices or need features such as DRM. For new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows, AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest output group, including for low-latency workflows; AWS identifies LL-HLS support. If MediaLive already generates all formats your players need and MediaPackage packaging is unnecessary, consider MediaStore as the origin instead.
  5. Configure CloudFront to use the origin. Set the MediaPackage endpoint or MediaStore container as the origin, then create cache behaviors that match the actual manifest and segment paths. For example, AWS’s guidance uses patterns such as .m3u8 for HLS manifests, .ts for transport-stream segments, and .mp4 for CMAF segments. Validate the paths against the formats your endpoint really emits.
  6. Test playback from the intended player set. Check manifests and media segments through the configured delivery path, not just the encoder output. Player compatibility, endpoint behavior, and CloudFront cache behavior need to work together.

AWS’s documentation describes MediaPackage v2 processing in which an upstream encoder sends HLS with AWS Signature Version 4 authorization and MediaPackage serves packaged output over HTTPS. Use the documented authorization and endpoint pattern that matches your chosen workflow.

Choose packaging, latency, and resilience deliberately

Decision Option When it fits
Origin and packaging MediaPackage When you need packaging across playback formats or related capabilities such as DRM.
Origin and packaging MediaStore When MediaLive already generates the formats required by target devices and MediaPackage packaging is not needed.
Latency path Standard live delivery When standard live delivery meets the event’s requirements.
Latency path MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest with LL-HLS support AWS recommends this output group for new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows and identifies it for low-latency delivery. AWS’s cited documentation does not quantify end-to-end glass-to-glass latency; actual latency depends on the full configuration.
Source contribution MediaConnect flow or Elemental Link When those services or devices suit the existing contribution workflow.
Source contribution RTMP phone or webcam source When a mobile phone or webcam is the chosen source and can send RTMP.
Resilience One feed A simpler architecture where the event’s operational needs do not call for parallel input feeds.
Resilience Parallel feeds When the event warrants the extra architecture and operational planning. AWS’s reference solution processes two feeds in parallel; that behavior is not automatic in every setup.

Low-latency support in one part of the chain does not establish a specific end-to-end delay. Consider the whole contribution, encoding, packaging, delivery, and player path when setting expectations.

Secure the origin and verify delivery behavior

In AWS’s reference solution, CloudFront uses MediaPackage custom endpoints as origins and sends a CDN Identifier header so MediaPackage can authorize requests arriving through CloudFront. The solution stores the identifier in AWS Secrets Manager. These are elements of that reference architecture; a separately built workflow still needs its own correct origin authorization and access-control configuration.

Estimate cost from the event you plan to deliver

AWS’s deployment guide gives illustrative event estimates, not current universal quotes. Its figures depend on the stated region, viewer count, bitrate assumptions, and other scenario details; AWS says prices can change.

AWS guide scenario Illustrative estimate Qualification
One-hour SD-540p event, about 1,000 viewers, US East (N. Virginia) Approximately $69.74 total: $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution The guide assumes specific bitrates and viewer traffic, and that viewers consume the highest bitrate; it excludes test-player storage. It is a scenario estimate, not a current quote.
One-hour HD-1080p event, about 10,000 viewers Approximately $1,505.60 This is the guide’s estimate under its specified assumptions, not a current quote. The cited result does not establish this figure as a general price for other regions or traffic profiles.

Your actual total depends on encoding channel, input, and output configuration; packaging ingest and origination; and CloudFront viewer delivery. Audience size, bitrate ladder, event duration, cache behavior, viewer geography, and current regional rates all affect the calculation. Use current AWS pricing with your planned or measured traffic rather than treating either example as a budget guarantee.

Troubleshoot the delivery path from source to player

  • The source does not arrive at the workflow: Check the selected input path and the upstream feed type. Confirm that the source is supplying a format the configured MediaLive input can receive.
  • The encoder output does not reach the next service: Compare the output group and protocol with the downstream receiver. AWS documents different paths, including HLS over HTTPS to MediaPackage and RTMP or SRT to compatible receivers.
  • The stream works at the origin but not through CloudFront: Check the CloudFront origin, cache behaviors, and manifest and segment path patterns against the actual endpoint output.
  • CloudFront cannot retrieve protected origin content: Verify the origin authorization configuration. In AWS’s reference architecture, a CDN Identifier header is used for MediaPackage authorization and its identifier is stored in Secrets Manager.
  • Playback fails on some devices: Confirm that the delivered formats match the target players and that manifests and media segments are routed correctly. HLS, DASH, CMAF, and other supported formats are choices to validate against your actual device set.
  • The design is not resilient to a source failure: Review whether the event needs parallel input feeds. Two-feed parallel processing is part of AWS’s reference solution, but must be designed and deployed rather than assumed.
  • A planned service is unavailable in the selected Region: Check AWS’s current regional availability before deployment; for a MediaConnect input, keep the solution in the same Region as its flow.

Or let it run in the cloud

AWS Media Services are for building a live contribution, encoding, packaging, and delivery workflow. If your goal instead is to keep a YouTube channel live using uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option: upload a video or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home: StreamNeo loops recordings from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
  • Each slot streams what you uploaded, with no re-encode, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. To start the free day, create a StreamNeo account.
