Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most desktop creators who want flexible control over gameplay, screen, webcam, and microphone recording, OBS Studio is the strongest first option to try. Streamlabs Desktop is a sensible alternative if you prefer a guided setup and recording and streaming in one workflow. Neither is proven faster or better by a controlled head-to-head test here; choose by the sources and controls you need, then test it on your own computer.
Which recording software fits your YouTube workflow?
OBS Studio: flexible capture and configuration
OBS Studio is a strong candidate if you want to combine game or screen capture with a webcam, capture card, microphone, and desktop audio, while controlling scenes and recording settings. Its Quick Start Guide recommends starting with the Auto-Configuration Wizard, adding sources, checking audio, reviewing output settings, and making a test recording. Available capture sources depend on your operating system: OBS documents desktop and window capture on Windows and Linux, macOS screen capture, Windows game capture, and video capture sources such as webcams and capture cards. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
The wizard considers your goal and computer resources, but compatibility alone does not ensure smooth recording. OBS says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its requirements page explains that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. That page is dated August 25, 2021, so check current documentation alongside a real test on your setup: OBS system requirements.
Streamlabs Desktop: a guided recording and streaming workflow
Streamlabs Desktop is worth considering if you prefer a guided setup or want recording and streaming tools in the same application. Its getting-started guide lets new users choose recording or streaming, import OBS settings, select a free Starter option or paid Ultra, add camera and microphone devices, and capture a display, window, or game. A Screen Capture source is described as an auto-fitted way to switch between capture methods. Its recording guide covers audio tracks, output resolution, frame rate, file format, and encoder choices. Read Streamlabs’ getting-started guide and recording settings guide.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Capture source: Do you need a game capture, selected application window, entire display, webcam, or capture card? Use a game or window source when that is all you need, and check which windows will be visible before recording.
- Scene flexibility: If you switch between gameplay, camera, overlays, or other sources during a session, look at how each application lets you arrange and switch scenes.
- Audio control: Check whether you can monitor and record microphone and desktop audio as intended, and whether separate audio tracks matter for your later workflow.
- Setup preference: OBS offers a wizard followed by configurable sources and output settings. Streamlabs documents a guided start and the option to import OBS settings.
- Encoder and machine load: Compare available encoder choices and test the workload at your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Streaming tools: If you also want to stream live from the same desktop application, account for those tools; if you only need a local recording, they may not decide the choice.
There are no controlled comparative benchmark results establishing that one of these applications is faster, lighter, or produces higher-quality recordings than the other. Treat them as workflow fits, not as a measured performance ranking.
Set up a recording that captures the right picture and sound
- Choose what belongs in the video. Decide whether you are recording a game, one app window, the full desktop, a camera, microphone, desktop audio, or some combination. Prefer a game or window capture if you do not need the whole desktop, and close or hide anything private before recording.
- Configure capture and audio sources. Run the setup wizard where available, or select the sources manually. Confirm the intended microphone and desktop-audio meters respond. OBS captures desktop audio and microphone by default, but lets you select devices manually; Streamlabs’ setup guidance describes adding a chosen external microphone as an input.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can sustain. Streamlabs recommends 60 FPS in most cases and says static board-game footage may work at 30 FPS. Those are vendor recommendations, not universal requirements. If your test recording stutters or overloads the system, lower output resolution or frame rate and test again; there is no guaranteed frame rate for untested hardware.
- Set the recording location and format. Confirm where the file will be saved and that the drive has room for the session. Streamlabs suggests MP4 for most cases, and YouTube’s upload guidance specifies MP4 for its recommended encoding settings. If a crash or power loss would be costly, check your recorder’s current container-recovery behavior instead of assuming every format protects unfinished files in the same way.
- Make a short test and inspect it. Record a representative few minutes, then play it back. Check for smooth motion, correct framing, readable game or desktop content, audible microphone and desktop sound, and any unwanted windows. OBS recommends a test recording; Streamlabs likewise advises a short test and checking system performance.
Settings for a file you plan to upload to YouTube
YouTube Help’s recommended upload encoding page lists MP4, H.264 video, and matching the upload frame rate to the frame rate used to record. Listed common frame rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. Its SDR reference bitrates are recommendations for upload encoding, not mandatory recording settings:

These are YouTube Help’s published SDR upload recommendations; the page notes that the feature is available only to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager. Do not treat them as universal recorder bitrate requirements. Check the current YouTube recommended upload encoding settings page for applicability and updates. Recording at a high bitrate can create larger files, so balance detail against available storage and your upload connection.

The recording stutters or the computer struggles
Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity all affect system load. Re-run the setup wizard if available, simplify the scene, or lower output resolution or frame rate. Make another test at the settings you intend to use; compatible hardware is not a performance guarantee.

The video is present but the microphone or game audio is missing
Check the selected input and output devices, then watch their meters while speaking and while game or desktop audio is playing. Record a short test and listen to it, rather than relying only on a visually correct preview.
The wrong screen or a private window appears
Review the selected capture source before recording. Choose a game or application window instead of the full display when appropriate, and close or hide private material from any desktop capture.

The file is unexpectedly large or will not upload as expected
Check the recording resolution, frame rate, bitrate, container, and available storage. For YouTube’s recommendations, use the stated MP4 container and H.264 video guidance, and match the upload frame rate to the recorded frame rate. If a recording was interrupted, consult the recorder’s current guidance for recovery of that file format.
For a 24/7 YouTube channel, use a different kind of tool
Recording software creates a local video file; it is not the same job as keeping a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock. If your goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud rather than from your recording computer.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
