OBS Studio is the best starting point for creators who want free, open-source software and detailed control over scenes, sources, and audio. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative if you prefer guided setup and built-in creator tools such as themes, alerts, and widgets. Neither is the universal winner: choose based on your operating system, computer, format, destinations, and how much control or convenience you want.

OBS Studio vs. Streamlabs Desktop at a glance

What matters OBS Studio Streamlabs Desktop
Best fit Creators who want configurable production and are comfortable setting up scenes and sources. Creators who value guided onboarding and bundled creator tools.
Cost and model Free and open source, according to the OBS Project. Streamlabs describes Ultra as optional; check current pricing and plan entitlements on its official site.
Production tools Scenes, varied sources, transitions, audio filters, and VST support. Onboarding, widgets, themes, alerts, and other creator tools.
Destinations and formats Check the current OBS documentation and your intended platform workflow. Streamlabs lists Twitch, YouTube Live, TikTok, and more; its FAQ describes multistreaming. Confirm current destination support and plan conditions.
Best deciding question Do you want direct control over your production setup? Would guided setup and bundled tools save enough effort to justify any paid features you choose?

Software compatibility is not a promise that a particular computer can encode a specific scene smoothly. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all affect workload.

Choose based on the stream you want to make

Pick OBS Studio for configurable production

OBS is a practical default if you want to build scenes from different sources, shape your audio chain, and control transitions without paying for the software. Its official description calls it “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” The OBS download page lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux installation options; check the current download page for your operating system.

Pick Streamlabs Desktop for guided setup and bundled tools

Streamlabs Desktop may suit creators who want onboarding and integrated widgets, themes, and alerts in one workflow. The vendor’s onboarding guide, published May 20, 2026, lists minimum and recommended computer configurations. Its FAQ describes Ultra as optional, but features and plan terms can change, so verify the current details before paying.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check format and destinations before building scenes

Confirm the exact platforms you plan to use, whether you need simultaneous multistreaming, and whether your account is eligible for the relevant feature. Streamlabs lists Twitch, YouTube Live, TikTok, and more, and describes multistreaming in its FAQ; that does not establish that every destination combination is available on every plan. YouTube distinguishes horizontal live streams from vertical live feeds, so decide your target layout before composing overlays and scene elements (YouTube’s guidance on vertical live streams).

Check your computer and operating system

Start with the application’s published compatibility requirements, then assess whether your machine can handle the actual stream. An operating system being supported does not guarantee smooth encoding at your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Level Configuration in Streamlabs’ guide
Minimum Windows 11 or macOS 12; 8 GB RAM; integrated graphics; 10 GB storage.
Recommended Windows 11 or macOS 13 or newer; 16 GB RAM; an 11th- or 12th-generation Intel Core i5, Ryzen 5 5600X, or better; RTX 20/30 or RX 5000/6000 graphics; 512 GB or larger SSD.

These are Streamlabs’ published recommendations, not a guarantee of performance for every game, scene, encoder, or output setting. See the vendor’s onboarding guide and system requirements for current details.

Set up and test before going live

  1. Install the software for your operating system. Download OBS from its official download page, or follow Streamlabs’ onboarding guide.
  2. Run the initial setup. In OBS, use the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. In Streamlabs, follow the guided onboarding. The suggested configuration is only a starting point; check the result with your actual content.
  3. Build a scene for the content you will show. Add only the sources you need, arrange them for your chosen horizontal or vertical format, and check that overlays do not obscure important game or camera content.
  4. Configure and listen to audio. Check microphone and desktop/game audio levels, then listen to a local recording or private test. Confirm that sources are neither missing nor unintentionally doubled.
  5. Set the destination and verify stream settings. Connect the intended platform account or enter its stream details using that platform’s current instructions. Confirm resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings against your computer’s capacity and destination requirements.
  6. Run a test broadcast or recording. Watch for dropped frames, stutter, unreadable text, clipped audio, and layout problems. Reduce workload or simplify the scene if the test is unstable.

What else might you need?

Streaming software is the core choice; extra equipment depends on the format and setup. A webcam or microphone can help if your format calls for face-camera video or live commentary, but neither is required for every stream. A capture card is relevant to some console or external-video workflows, not a universal requirement. Streamlabs’ equipment guidance discusses webcams, microphones, and computer encoding capability (equipment guide).

Common decision mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing from a feature list alone: A feature only matters if it fits your platforms, format, and workflow. Check account eligibility and plan limits for multistreaming.
  • Assuming compatibility means adequate performance: Test the actual game or video, scene, output format, and settings on your own computer.
  • Buying equipment before identifying a need: Add a camera, microphone, capture card, or control pad only when your content or workflow calls for it.
  • Paying for convenience features you will not use: Compare the paid tools and entitlements you need against a free setup before subscribing.
  • Overlooking platform rules: Use content you have rights to stream and follow the destination’s copyright and content policies. Software cannot grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted game music, video, or other material.

Or let it run in the cloud
