To run a Q&A on YouTube, start a live stream from YouTube Studio, open Live Chat, select Add → Start a Q&A, and enter a prompt. As questions arrive, choose one from the Questions List and pin it in chat while you answer. A verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days is required, and the streamer must be at least 16. For a simple talking session, YouTube’s webcam route is usually enough; use an encoder if you need more production control.
Choose how to go live
YouTube supports webcam, encoder, mobile, and console routes. For a computer-based question-and-answer session, the choice usually comes down to how much production equipment and control you need.

A typical Q&A does not require a mixer or hardware encoder. YouTube identifies external microphones and webcams as common equipment, with mixers and hardware encoders among the options for more involved productions. Choose gear to solve a specific audio or video problem rather than treating it as a prerequisite.
Check eligibility and prepare the event
Confirm channel access
Before planning the session, verify that your channel is eligible to stream: it must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. YouTube’s requirements and available routes are listed in Get started with live streaming.

Create or schedule the stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- For an encoder stream, use the Stream tab to create a stream, or Manage to schedule one. For a webcam session, choose Webcam.
- Enter the title, description, privacy setting, and other event details. Select the intended camera and microphone in the webcam workflow.
- Schedule in advance if you want a shareable event page and the option for viewers to opt in to reminders.
Use public, private, or unlisted visibility deliberately. Keep private information off camera and out of chat, and grant channel access only to people you trust. YouTube’s webcam guidance covers event setup and privacy.
Set up Live Q&A and keep chat manageable
Start Q&A
- Open the live chat panel and choose Add → Start a Q&A.
- Write a prompt that makes the topic and kind of questions clear, then start the Q&A.
- When you are ready to answer a question, select it in the Questions List and pin it at the top of chat. Close its banner when you have finished with it.
- End the Q&A from the chat controls when the session is over.
YouTube describes the feature this way: “Live Q&A lets you find and select questions within your Live Chat to answer for your viewers.” Unanswered questions in the list are deleted when Q&A ends, while the session remains available in Chat Replay. Set chat expectations and moderation
At the start, tell viewers how to submit questions and what you will prioritize. If you cannot comfortably host and track chat at once, ask a trusted moderator to help select or group questions. You can also pin an ordinary chat message with submission instructions; only the host can pin ordinary chat messages.
- Slow mode: use it if messages arrive too quickly to follow.
- Subscriber-only chat: consider it if you need to limit who can participate, and explain the restriction before questions begin.
- Held messages: enable review of potentially inappropriate messages if that suits the session.

Test the stream before viewers arrive
Check connection, picture, and sound
- Test the camera framing and microphone in the route you plan to use. Listen for clear speech and watch for unwanted background noise.
- Check outbound upload capacity against the stream’s total bitrate, and leave about 20% headroom. YouTube presents this as an operational recommendation, not a guaranteed threshold.
- For an encoder stream, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Check the Live Control Room preview, verify the event page on channel/watch pages and on mobile, then monitor audio and video quality during the session.

Protect the stream key when using an encoder
Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder. Treat the key like a credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder. YouTube explains stream settings, latency, and DVR in Manage live stream settings and its encoder setup guide.

Host the Q&A so questions are easy to follow
- Read each selected question aloud or briefly restate it before answering, so viewers who arrive mid-answer have context.
- For a large audience, curate from the Q&A list rather than trying to answer every chat message.
- Leave a pause after asking for questions. Latency—the delay between capture and playback—affects how quickly viewers can hear and respond. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but may result in more buffering.
- Remember that DVR lets viewers pause and resume during a live stream, so their playback position may not match the live chat.
- If you want a guest conversation, YouTube Go Live Together supports a guest on a mobile stream, with one guest appearing at a time. The host remains responsible for the content on the stream.

End the stream and preserve the conversation
End a webcam stream using its webcam controls, or end an encoder stream through the Live Control Room or encoder workflow. YouTube’s webcam and encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Chat Replay is on by default for live-stream archives, but you can turn it off; check the archive settings if you do not want the chat preserved.
