You can make a creator highlight from a YouTube live stream in YouTube Studio while the broadcast is live or after it ends. Open the stream, choose Create highlight, trim the section, add its details, and select Create. If you only want to share a brief excerpt from the watch page, use YouTube’s separate Clip feature instead.
Choose the right tool: highlight, Clip, or mobile Short
YouTube has three related ways to share moments from a live broadcast. A creator highlight is an edited video published separately. A Clip is a short, looping excerpt tied to its source video. A mobile Short highlight is available only for certain streams made with the YouTube mobile app.
| Option | What it creates | Length and timing | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creator highlight | An edited video published separately from the stream | You can create it during the stream or afterward; YouTube’s cited instructions do not state a fixed duration | For editing after the broadcast, the stream recording must be available |
| Viewer-facing Clip | A public, looping excerpt linked to the source | 5–60 seconds; made from an eligible video or stream watch page | A live-stream Clip needs DVR and must fall within the DVR timeframe |
| Mobile Short highlight | A Short highlight saved from a qualifying mobile live | For streams 10 minutes to 12 hours long; YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify the resulting highlight’s duration | Requires a vertical stream made in the YouTube mobile app, with chat enabled, and other eligibility conditions |
These details reflect YouTube Help guidance checked on October 3, 2026; Studio labels and eligibility rules can change. See YouTube’s guides to creating a highlight, managing Clips, and promoting a live stream.
Make a creator highlight in YouTube Studio
Use this workflow when you want to select and publish an edited portion of your own broadcast. You can do it while live or after the stream ends.

- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open or start the broadcast from Stream or Manage.
- When a moment worth keeping happens, optionally select Insert stream marker in the upper-right. Markers make it easier to find moments on the timeline in YouTube Editor.
- Select Create highlight.
- Drag the timeline handles to set the section, or edit the timestamps. Use the mute/unmute control if needed.
- Enter a title, choose the video’s privacy, and add a description.
- Select Create. YouTube says the highlight is published automatically.
If you are streaming alone, you can add markers during the broadcast and edit afterward. A team can create a highlight during the broadcast, but having a team is not required. YouTube describes markers and the highlight workflow in its Create a highlight instructions.
Share a viewer-facing Clip from a live stream
Choose a Clip when you want a short excerpt that viewers can share from the original video’s watch page—not a separately edited creator highlight. YouTube Clips are public, and people can watch them only if they can also watch the source.

For live streams, DVR must be enabled and the selected moment must fall within the available DVR timeframe. If a Clip is created outside that timeframe, it may not become playable until the live stream ends and the original video is posted. Creators can manage Clips made from their videos in YouTube Studio. Check YouTube’s current Clip eligibility and management guidance before relying on this workflow.

Plan for DVR and long-stream recording limits
DVR affects what viewers can rewind or Clip
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Find the DVR setting in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room under stream settings and additional settings. A change made after going live affects viewers who begin playback after the change. See Turn on DVR on live streams for current details.

Keep a local recording for broadcasts over 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. Streams at 1440p and 2160p are automatically archived, but that does not remove the risk for a broadcast exceeding 12 hours. If you need an edit after a long stream, record a local copy and keep another backup if the footage matters; an external SSD is one possible storage option, not a YouTube requirement. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
