You can replace the room or wall behind a recorded talking-head video without filming against a green screen. Use an editor’s AI background-removal or subject-isolation effect, put a new background on a layer beneath the speaker, then preview and clean up the edges before exporting.
What you need for an AI background change
Start with an editor that can separate a person from the scene. The usual composition has two layers: the original clip with the speaker isolated in the foreground, and a still image, video, GIF, or solid color underneath. Some tools let you describe a replacement scene with a prompt instead of manually choosing and layering a background.
A clearly visible speaker with reasonable contrast against the surroundings gives the editor a better basis for separation. Descript recommends a visible person, solid contrast, and few distractions for cleaner removal. AI isolation can still leave artifacts, especially around hair, shoulders, hands, or motion, so plan to inspect the entire clip rather than judging the result from one frame.
How to replace the background in an editor
- Choose and import the clip. Use footage in which the person is visible throughout the section you plan to keep. Busy backgrounds, similar colors between clothing and surroundings, and abrupt lighting changes may make separation harder to review.
- Apply the person-isolation effect. In Descript, select the video layer, then choose Effects > Add effect > Green Screen. Descript describes this as an AI effect that detects the person and removes the surrounding background; it requires an internet connection. Despite the effect’s name, a physical green screen is not required for this AI workflow. See Descript’s Green Screen guide.
- Add the replacement behind the speaker. Import or choose a background and place it beneath the foreground video layer in the timeline. Descript documents image, video, and GIF backgrounds; depending on the editor, you may also use a flat color, stock visual, or prompt-described scene. Keep the speaker layer above the replacement so the subject remains in front.
- Review the whole clip and refine it. Scrub through the video, checking hair, shoulders, hands, movement, and lighting changes. Adjust the crop, scale, and placement where available. If the editor offers manual masking or cleanup, use it on visible edge problems; CapCut’s talking-head guidance recommends leaving room for a cleanup pass.
- Check text and export. Make sure captions, titles, and graphics remain easy to read against the new background. Export at the format and resolution your destination requires. There is no single export setting established for every editor or platform, so choose settings to suit your project.

Choose based on how you want to work: an effect inside an editor, a prompt-based backdrop change, or a timeline workflow with room for manual refinements. These documented workflows do not establish a head-to-head quality winner.

AI removal and chroma key are different
AI background removal identifies a person and attempts to remove the rest of the scene. Chroma key removes a selected color, commonly green or blue. For chroma key, a physical green or blue screen can provide a consistent color to remove; for AI subject isolation, the screen is optional. Descript advises using Chroma Key for footage recorded on a real green screen or for removing a solid background, rather than treating it as the same operation as AI Green Screen.
Common problems and fixes
- Hair or shoulders look clipped: Inspect several frames, not just the opening frame. Try a clip with clearer contrast if you can, and use the editor’s available cleanup or masking controls.
- Hands or moving edges flicker: Scrub across the motion and lighting changes. Refine the mask where controls allow; if separation remains distracting, consider a less detailed background or a different take.
- The replacement appears in front of the person: Reorder the timeline layers so the isolated speaker is above the background.
- The effect does not run: For Descript’s Green Screen effect, confirm that the device is connected to the internet, which its guide says the effect requires.
- Text becomes hard to read: Check captions and graphics over the final background and adjust their contrast or placement before export.
