You can run a video encoder on an AWS EC2 instance and send a continuous feed to YouTube Live using the event’s stream URL and stream key. The instance supplies the source and encoding workload; it does not bypass YouTube’s channel eligibility, format, or content rules. This guide covers a prerecorded video loop and a live camera or program feed, which have different source and compute requirements.
Before you start: enable YouTube Live and prepare an event
First make sure your YouTube channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of your broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Open the event’s stream settings and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Use the values for the event you intend to broadcast.
- Decide whether the event should be public, unlisted, or private, and check its latency, DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop settings against your intended workflow.
The stream key functions like a publishing credential. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, source repositories, and logs; restrict access to the operator and streaming process. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it through YouTube’s stream settings.
Choose what EC2 will send
Prerecorded video loop
For a 24/7 music, gameplay, or other prerecorded broadcast, the encoder reads a file or another reachable media source and repeats it. Confirm you have the rights to the video, audio, and any other material, and that the content complies with YouTube’s policies. Repeated playback does not make copyrighted material permissible, and streaming prerecorded material does not guarantee monetization or an archive.

Live camera or program feed
A genuinely live feed needs a continuing camera, screen, or production input reachable by the encoder. Plan for that source to remain available as well as the EC2 process. A prerecorded loop and a live production feed are not interchangeable: their capture needs, recovery plans, rights considerations, and compute requirements differ.
Encoding versus forwarding
If the input is already encoded in a format and bitrate suitable for YouTube, the instance may primarily forward it. If the workflow must resize, change frame rate, or transcode, it also needs to perform that encoding work. CPU, memory, network capacity, Region, storage, and media access all influence instance selection. AWS describes EC2 instance types as providing different CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity; its launch tutorial is not a video-encoding sizing recommendation. See AWS’s EC2 launch and connection guide.
No minimum or universally suitable instance size is established for this workflow. Begin with a workload-appropriate configuration, test the actual source and output for a sustained period, and watch CPU, memory, network use, and YouTube stream health before relying on it continuously.

Launch and secure the EC2 instance
- In the AWS EC2 launch workflow, choose an AMI and operating system, instance type, EBS-backed root storage, key pair, network, and security group. Choose a Region and storage arrangement that make sense for where the media and operators are located.
- Allow only the inbound access you need. For SSH administration, restrict the source to a trusted administrator IP range; consider AWS Session Manager where appropriate. Do not expose SSH or RDP broadly to the internet.
- Confirm the instance has outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The encoder sends the stream outward, so a public inbound port for the video feed is not ordinarily required.
- Install the chosen encoder from a trusted repository or vendor distribution. Put the media somewhere the encoder can read reliably, and ensure adequate storage if you keep local source files or recordings.
- Configure the operating system or service manager to start the streaming process as intended after a reboot, and test the restart behavior before depending on it.
AWS describes security groups as instance-level firewalls and notes that new security groups allow outbound traffic by default. Review both inbound and outbound rules for your particular network setup. See AWS security group guidance.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, and audio codecs AAC or MP3. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps, calls for constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Choose the bitrate for the resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance accessed October 3, 2026, lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Its recommendations differ at other settings. Treat those values as YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance or network path can sustain them.

- Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the source and intended viewing quality.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below four seconds.
- Select a supported video and audio codec, and ensure the chosen encoder supports the selected RTMP or RTMPS endpoint.
- Check that sustained outbound capacity can carry the selected bitrate; leave room for network variation rather than sizing right at the nominal rate.
- Test with representative motion and audio, then inspect YouTube’s stream health messages.
There is no safe universal FFmpeg command for this setup: the correct options depend on the source format, audio track, looping behavior, installed FFmpeg build, encoder implementation, and exact endpoint/key format. Build and validate a command for those specifics rather than copying an unverified one.
Start the feed and verify the event
- Open the intended event in YouTube Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s configuration.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL if the encoder supports it. YouTube notes that Live Control Room may initially show a standard RTMP URL; use its controls to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL when needed.
- Start the encoder so it begins sending the feed. Wait for YouTube to detect the incoming stream and show a preview.
- Run a short unlisted test before a public or scheduled broadcast. Confirm picture, audio, aspect ratio, movement, continuity, and stream health messages.
- For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder ahead of the event time and monitor the Live Control Room rather than assuming that a running EC2 process means the YouTube feed is healthy.
YouTube’s guidance recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, previewing the feed, and monitoring the stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and how to create a live stream with an encoder.
Keep a 24/7 stream running and recover from failures
A continuous broadcast needs monitoring beyond the initial start. Decide how you will detect and respond to a stopped encoder, lost source, network interruption, full disk, expired or replaced key, or degraded stream health. A process supervisor or operating-system service can help restart a process, but its configuration and recovery behavior must be tested for your OS and encoder.

- Monitor the encoder process and EC2 instance, and check YouTube Live Control Room stream health.
- Test recovery after an encoder crash, an instance reboot, and a temporary network interruption.
- Check storage capacity if the source, logs, or local recordings accumulate on the instance.
- Keep a separate recording if you need a complete copy of the broadcast.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a 24-hour or longer broadcast will be archived as one complete video. For a complete record, make and verify a separate recording. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Estimate EC2 costs for your actual configuration
An instance kept running continuously incurs compute charges for its running time; EBS storage is billed separately. The total depends on Region, instance type, storage, network transfer, and any other services you use. There is no responsible fixed monthly estimate without those choices. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator with your intended configuration, then review actual billing after a sustained test.
AWS says stopping an instance ends instance usage charges, but EBS storage charges continue. Stopping and restarting can also assign a new public IPv4 address, so check any configuration that depends on the instance’s address. See AWS’s stop and start guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| No event or stream key is available | Channel live-streaming eligibility and the selected event’s stream settings. | Confirm the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and live streaming has been enabled; use the intended event’s key. |
| Encoder cannot connect or TLS negotiation fails | Whether the encoder supports RTMPS and whether the URL is the matching RTMPS ingest endpoint. | Copy the endpoint shown for that event and verify protocol support; if using RTMPS, do not pair it with an incompatible RTMP configuration. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect stream format | Video/audio codecs, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate. | Compare encoder output with YouTube’s published encoder requirements. |
| Quality degrades or frames drop | Chosen bitrate versus resolution and frame rate, EC2 CPU load during encoding, sustained outbound capacity, and Live Control Room health. | Test an appropriate bitrate and workload, reduce output demands if needed, and investigate resource or network limits. |
| Stream does not resume after a reboot | EC2 lifecycle state and whether the OS or service manager starts the encoder with valid paths and credentials. | Configure and test startup and restart behavior; after a stop/start, verify any endpoint or address-dependent configuration. |
| No complete YouTube archive is available | Whether the stream exceeded 12 hours and whether a separate recording was running. | Do not rely on YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive statement for a 24/7 broadcast; preserve a separate recording when completeness matters. |
