You can remove a video background without a green screen using automatic subject removal in CapCut or Canva. The right choice depends on whether you want a straightforward replacement, a template-based design workflow, or a generative scene edit.

How to choose based on the footage and result you want
For a fast background replacement
Choose CapCut if you want an editor with documented automatic removal and options to put a solid color, still image, or video behind the subject. It is also the most direct fit if you sometimes work with green- or blue-screen footage and want a separate chroma-key method. Inspect the entire clip, not just a still frame: hair, motion, and edges can reveal problems that are easy to miss in a preview.

For a designed or branded video
Choose Canva if your edit already involves its templates, design tools, and media library. Its video remover is described as making the background transparent so you can layer a replacement, then download the result as an MP4. Include Canva Pro access in your decision rather than assuming the feature is available on every account.
For a prompt-led scene change
Choose Runway when the goal is to change the apparent set or backdrop with a written prompt, optionally guided by a reference image. That is a different task from simply isolating a subject and placing a new layer behind it. Keep the documented 30-second, 1080p sequence scope and paid-plan access in mind, and confirm which editing modes are available when you use the product.

How to replace a video background in each editor
CapCut: automatic removal or chroma key
- Desktop automatic removal: Import the clip, open Video, choose Remove BG, then select Auto removal. This is the documented no-green-screen route.
- Browser automatic removal: Import the clip, open Smart tools, choose Remove background, and select Auto removal.
- Browser chroma key: For footage shot against green or blue, use Smart tools → Remove background → Chroma key, then select the key color. This method depends on the screen footage; it is distinct from automatic removal.
- Place a color, image, or video behind the isolated subject. The desktop instructions also describe choosing an AI-generated or library backdrop.
- If an area needs attention, use the documented custom-removal controls to refine it. Review the full clip after adjusting, then export using the settings appropriate for your project.
CapCut’s browser guidance describes Chroma key as a way to select the key color for green- or blue-screen footage. The exact controls and free-tier access may differ across versions or regions, so check the interface and plan available to your account.
Canva: remove, layer, and download
- Upload a clip or select a video from Canva’s media library.
- Choose Background Remover. Canva describes detecting and masking the foreground subject across frames, leaving the background transparent.
- Add a replacement image or other design elements behind the subject, or build on a suitable template.
- Review the clip and make any final design adjustments, then download it as an MP4.
Canva describes this remover as a Canva Pro feature. Check that your account has access before building the workflow around it.

Runway: edit a keyframe with a prompt
- In Edit Studio, select a keyframe that clearly shows the part of the scene you want to change. For a backdrop or scene change, Runway’s help guidance recommends a wide frame.
- Describe the change in a prompt. Add a reference image if it will help guide the result.
- Preview the image edit, then generate the change across the footage.
- Check the result across cuts and motion, not just on the selected keyframe. Confirm the available mode and sequence limits in the current product before starting.
Runway’s help information identifies Single edit as the currently offered mode, with Multi-edit and Expand described as coming soon. That status can change, so verify the live interface.
What to inspect before exporting
A convincing still frame does not guarantee a clean-looking clip. Review the complete composition at normal playback speed and look for errors that appear as the subject moves or the camera changes.

- Subject edges: Check hair, motion blur, translucent objects, and the outline around shoulders or hands against the replacement background.
- Whole-clip consistency: Look for flicker, disappearing details, or changes in the mask from frame to frame.
- Background placement: Make sure the new scene, image, or color works across the full frame and does not compete with the subject.
- Transitions and cuts: Review each shot separately. In prompt-led edits, inspect how a change carries across cuts; in automatic removal, check whether the subject remains isolated throughout.
- Export: Confirm the output plays correctly and suits the destination. The compared product information does not establish a common set of export limits or settings across the three tools.

- The subject still has pieces of the old background: Revisit the mask and use available refinement controls. In CapCut, its documented custom-removal controls can address areas needing attention; then review the full clip again.
- The replacement looks jagged or inconsistent in motion: Check several moments in the clip rather than judging a single frame. If the shot was filmed against green or blue, try CapCut’s Chroma key route; otherwise, use the automatic-removal workflow intended for footage without a screen.
- You cannot find a named control: Confirm whether you are using CapCut desktop or browser, and check the current interface and regional feature availability. The documented paths differ between desktop and browser.
- A feature is unavailable on your account: Check the plan requirements and current regional access. Canva describes its remover as part of Canva Pro; CapCut advises checking the free-tier feature set; Runway describes Edit Studio/Aleph 2.0 as paid-plan access.
- A Runway mode or limit does not match a tutorial: Verify the current Edit Studio interface and plan. The documented status of Single edit, Multi-edit, and Expand, as well as sequence scope, may change.
If the finished video also needs to run as a YouTube live stream
Background editors prepare footage; they do not keep a YouTube channel live.
