Best Screen Recording Software for Twitch Streamers

OBS Studio is the best starting point for most PC Twitch streamers; Streamlabs Desktop suits creators who want integrated tools and selective recording.

For most PC Twitch streamers, start with OBS Studio: it is free, open source, and supports local recording with configurable quality, format, encoder, and audio tracks. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative if you want recording alongside integrated overlays and the option to record a different mix of sources from your live broadcast. If your gameplay comes from a console and you want to capture it on a computer, you may also need a compatible capture card.

Recording software lets you save gameplay locally while you stream; it is not the same as a service that keeps a pre-recorded video running as a 24/7 YouTube livestream. Choose based on where your footage comes from, how much control you need over the recording, and how you plan to edit it.

Which screen recording software should you choose?

Option Best fit What to know
OBS Studio PC streamers who want free, flexible recording controls Free and open source; supports scenes and varied sources, with local recording settings for format, quality, encoder, and audio tracks.
Streamlabs Desktop Creators who prefer recording and stream features in an integrated interface Offers local recording, overlays and other integrated stream features. Selective Recording can use different sources for the recording and live output.
Capture card plus computer software Some console-to-PC workflows Hardware may be needed to bring console gameplay into the computer. Confirm compatibility with the console, computer, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use.

There is no established performance winner here: the available official material does not provide a controlled comparison of system load, output quality, or setup time. Twitch lists OBS and Streamlabs Desktop among common broadcast applications, but says its supported-app list can change; check the Creator Dashboard if current support status matters to your setup. See Twitch’s recommended broadcasting software.

OBS Studio: best starting point for most PC streamers

OBS Studio is free and open source, and its scenes can combine sources such as windows, webcams, images, browser windows, and capture cards. The OBS official page reported version 32.2.2 dated August 14, 2026, and listed Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux. Check the download page for current version and operating-system details before installing. Visit OBS Studio.

Twitch’s OBS recording guide covers the important local-output choices: recording quality, destination, file format, encoder, and audio tracks. The specific encoders available depend on your computer. Follow Twitch’s local-recording guide.

Choose a format with recovery in mind

Twitch recommends MKV because a crash is less likely to make you lose the entire recording. If you need a different format for editing or playback, check your editor’s supported formats and OBS’s recording options; do not trade crash resilience for convenience without considering how you will convert or use the file.

Balance recording quality against storage

Higher local recording quality creates larger files, according to Twitch. Choose the quality you actually need for your edits and keep an eye on available disk space, especially for long streams. There is no single quality setting that fits every game, computer, and editing workflow.

Separate audio tracks when editing requires it

Twitch’s instructions describe Advanced mode with up to four audio tracks. Separate tracks can make it easier to adjust or remove audio sources during editing, but the tracks must be deliberately configured before recording. If a single finished mix is all you need, a more complex track setup may add work without helping your workflow.

When Streamlabs Desktop makes sense

Consider Streamlabs Desktop if you want local recording alongside an integrated interface for overlays, widgets, and chat-related features. Its Selective Recording feature lets you choose sources for the recorded output separately from sources sent to the live broadcast. That is useful when, for example, you want a clean gameplay recording without every element shown on stream. See Streamlabs Desktop’s feature comparison and its Selective Recording guide.

Choose it for those workflow features, not on the assumption that it will use fewer resources or produce better recordings: the available sources do not establish a measured performance advantage over OBS.

Recording console gameplay on a computer

PC gameplay can generally be captured directly through recording software. Console footage routed to a computer is a different setup: a capture card may be required to bring the video into the streaming or recording application. Streamlabs documents a PlayStation-to-Twitch workflow using streaming software and a capture card; that specific guide does not establish that every console, card, computer, or format combination is compatible. Review Streamlabs’ Twitch setup guide, then check the hardware maker’s compatibility details for your own target resolution and frame rate.

A practical setup checklist

  • Identify the source: choose direct PC capture for computer gameplay; investigate capture-card compatibility for console footage routed through a computer.
  • Decide what the recording should contain: if it should differ from the live scene, use Streamlabs Selective Recording or configure an appropriate recording scene in your chosen software.
  • Set the destination and quality: choose a folder with enough free space and a quality appropriate to your editing needs; higher quality means larger files.
  • Choose a file format deliberately: Twitch recommends MKV to reduce the risk of losing the whole file after a crash.
  • Check the encoder options your computer offers: available choices vary by system, so select an option supported by your setup rather than assuming every encoder is available.
  • Configure audio tracks before going live: use separate tracks only if you need to mix or edit sources independently later.
  • Make a short test recording: confirm that gameplay, microphone, other audio, and intended sources appear as expected before relying on a full broadcast recording.

Recording locally versus keeping a pre-recorded video live

Local recording software saves footage on your computer while you stream. A different job is keeping an uploaded video or playlist running continuously as a YouTube livestream: that requires a service that plays the uploaded material from the cloud, not a Twitch recording setting. For copyright and reused-content considerations on YouTube, review the applicable platform rules and make sure you have the rights to the material you broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded video that should stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is the #1 option: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only and does not record a live camera feed. The first day is free with no card; after that, monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.

Common recording problems and what to check

  • The recording file is missing or unusable after a crash: use the MKV format Twitch recommends for reducing the risk of losing the full recording, and verify the recording destination is writable.
  • The disk fills up during a long stream: reduce recording quality if appropriate and check the destination drive’s free space; Twitch notes that higher quality produces larger files.
  • The recorded video is missing a source shown on stream: review the recording scene or Selective Recording choices. In Streamlabs, live and recorded sources can intentionally differ.
  • Audio is difficult to edit independently: plan the audio-track layout before recording and configure separate tracks where your editing workflow needs them. Twitch’s Advanced mode supports up to four audio tracks.
  • Your encoder choice is unavailable: encoder options depend on the computer. Select among options actually offered by the application on your system.
  • Console footage does not appear in the computer application: check the capture card connection and confirm that the card supports your console, computer, and intended resolution and frame rate.

What Twitch recording can—and cannot—guarantee

Twitch Support describes local recording as a way to preserve a copy of a broadcast: “Locally recording your broadcasts ensures you have a 1:1 copy of your exact stream at the highest quality possible, and also a backup of your content – just in-case!” This is Twitch’s description of the purpose of local recording, not a guarantee that every setup will produce identical quality under every configuration. Your selected recording settings, hardware, and available storage still matter.
