Screen recording saves captured video as a file you can watch or edit later. Live streaming sends audio and video over the internet to a platform so viewers can watch as it happens. The distinction is the output and when the audience receives it—not necessarily which app you use: OBS Studio supports both.

These are workflow differences, not a universal performance ranking. The OBS Project says system demands vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; it does not establish a fixed resource gap between recording and streaming. Actual needs depend on your setup.
Do you need separate software?
Not necessarily. The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” Its feature set includes real-time audio and video capture and mixing, multiple scene sources, recording, and streaming. Sources can include a webcam or capture card, though neither is required for a basic screen capture.
If you want both a live broadcast and a saved file, software that supports both outputs can handle the two jobs. OBS’s overview guide says its advanced output mode allows stream and recording settings to be configured independently, so you can choose settings suited to each output rather than assuming one configuration must serve both.

Which workflow should you choose?
- Choose recording when you want to edit the footage, publish it later, or keep a file for reference.
- Choose streaming when viewers need to watch the event live on a platform. For YouTube, Google documents using software or a hardware encoder to send a live stream.
- Choose both when you need a live audience and a local copy for later editing or archiving. Confirm that your software supports both outputs and that you have storage for the recording.
What affects performance?
Both workflows capture and encode media, so resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity matter in either case. Streaming also depends on delivering the encoded feed over a network. Recording writes a file to local storage, so available space and write performance matter when you save a copy.
The OBS Project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system-requirements page, dated 2021-08-25, says CPU needs vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and recommends trying the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. That guidance does not establish a universal hardware requirement or mean that streaming always needs a more powerful computer.

Common setup problems
- The recording stops or cannot be saved: Check that the destination drive has enough free space and can write the file reliably. A network connection does not replace local storage if you want a saved copy.
- The stream struggles while recording: Recording adds local file writing to the capture-and-encoding workload. Review your encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, then use the software’s configuration guidance as a starting point.
- The video is not available to viewers when expected: A recording must be uploaded or otherwise shared after capture. A stream must be sent to the selected platform while the event is live.
- You expect one set of settings to suit both outputs: In OBS, advanced output mode lets you configure stream and recording settings independently; check the selected output mode and settings.
