There is no single best browser-based screen recorder for everyone. Loom is a straightforward fit for quick Chrome walkthroughs and link sharing; Vimeo combines recording with hosted-video tools; Zight is worth considering for browser-based feedback requests; and ScreenPal pairs a Chrome extension with desktop creation tools. Choose by capture scope, editing and sharing needs, and the limits of the plan you’ll actually use. These are vendor-described capabilities, not results of comparative hands-on testing.

How to choose a browser-based screen recorder

Start with what you need to capture and what should happen to the recording afterward. “Browser-based” does not mean every tool records the same things or keeps the whole workflow inside one browser tab.

  • Capture scope: Check whether you can record a tab, window, region, or the whole screen, and whether webcam and microphone capture are available.
  • Where you work: If the walkthrough involves another desktop app, a PDF, or content outside the browser, verify that the tool can capture it. Extension-based capture can have limitations.
  • After recording: Decide whether you need trimming, transcript-based editing, captions, annotations, hosting, or simply a link to share.
  • Free-plan limits: Compare duration, number of recordings, and which features require a paid plan. Limits can change, so check the current plan details before committing.
  • Audience and access: Consider whether viewers can open a shared link easily and whether you need controls for private sharing or a managed video library.

Browser-based screen recorders compared

Tool What its vendor describes Best fit Limits and workflow details to check
Loom Its Chrome extension records screen-only or screen-plus-camera, then opens the recording in a browser for editing and link sharing. Fast browser walkthroughs, demos, or async updates where a shareable link is the main deliverable. The Starter plan has a limit of 25 videos per member. Loom says advanced tools such as drawing, virtual backgrounds, and HD recording require the desktop app. Atlassian’s Loom help documentation says camera bubbles cannot be recorded on Chrome PDF documents or while recording an application outside Chrome; availability also depends on plan.
Vimeo Its online recorder supports screen, webcam, or both, alongside features including text-based editing, captions, private sharing, and hosted-video management. Recording when you also want a video-hosting and editing workflow. Vimeo says its online recorder works in Safari, Edge, and Chrome. Its Chrome extension opens Record Studio in a new browser tab rather than using the former in-browser widget; the change was implemented in October 2024. Vimeo Help Center documentation says the extension feature is included with all Vimeo plans.
Zight It describes recording a screen, window, region, camera, or screen and camera together, with links viewers can open in a browser. Feedback or bug-report workflows, especially when you want to request a recording from someone else. Zight says its free plan covers recordings up to five minutes. Its browser-based video requests let another person record without an account or install, and can attach console logs and browser details. Check the current plan limits before relying on them.
ScreenPal Its free Chrome extension records screen, webcam, or both. The vendor also describes desktop creation tools and online hosting. People who want a Chrome launch point plus a broader set of creation and hosting tools. The vendor lists free features including area, window, and screen capture; microphone capture; drawing while recording; captions; saving video files; and GIF creation. It is not purely a browser-only product, so check which parts of your workflow use desktop tools.

These descriptions reflect vendor documentation; they do not establish which tool has the best recording quality, reliability, privacy protections, or performance on your particular device. Test your intended workflow before relying on a recorder for an important demo or report.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Loom for a quick Chrome walkthrough

Loom’s extension-to-browser-editing flow is a practical choice when the goal is to capture a walkthrough and share it by link. Check the Starter video limit and confirm that your capture target is supported; PDFs and applications outside Chrome can affect camera-bubble recording, and some advanced tools require the desktop app.

Choose Vimeo if recording is part of a hosting workflow

Vimeo is a stronger candidate when editing, captions, private sharing, and managing hosted videos matter alongside capture. Its extension opens Record Studio in a new tab, so distinguish that workflow from recording directly inside the page you are viewing.

Choose Zight for recording requests and bug reports

Zight’s video-request workflow is the differentiator when another person needs to send feedback from a browser without installing software or creating an account. The option to attach console logs and browser details can be useful for technical reports. Its stated five-minute free-plan limit may rule it out for longer recordings.

Choose ScreenPal for an extension connected to desktop tools

ScreenPal may suit creators who want browser-launched capture and a path into desktop creation and online hosting. Review which features are in the extension and which depend on its desktop tools, especially if you need the recording process to stay entirely in a browser.

Check the workflow before you record something important

  1. Make a short trial recording. Capture the same kind of screen, window, or region you expect to use for the real recording.
  2. Test camera and microphone together. Confirm that the camera appears where you expect and that the microphone is audible. If you need to record a PDF or another application, test that exact case rather than assuming extension capture will behave the same way.
  3. Review the edit and share steps. Check whether you can make the edits you need, where the recording is stored, and what a recipient has to do to view it.
  4. Confirm plan limits and access settings. Check the current duration or video-count limits and set sharing permissions appropriately for the audience.
  5. Keep an original when needed. If you need a local file for a specific workflow, verify that the tool and plan allow you to save one before recording.

When a browser recorder is the wrong fit

A browser recorder may not be the right choice if your work depends on capturing several desktop applications, needs controls that are only available in a desktop app, or requires a privacy or reliability guarantee that you have not independently verified. In those cases, test the exact application and sharing setup first, or compare a dedicated desktop recorder against your requirements. The product descriptions summarized here do not establish independent security, accessibility, compatibility, or reliability results.

After recording: keep a YouTube video live from the cloud

Screen recorders create recordings; they do not, by themselves, keep a YouTube channel live around the clock. If your separate goal is to play uploaded recordings as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media, not a browser screen recorder. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; the cloud service loops your uploaded video.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
