Manage YouTube Live Chat in two layers: set channel-wide safeguards in YouTube Studio before the stream, then use moderators and message controls to handle specific situations live. Review held messages rather than relying on filters alone, and choose participation limits—such as subscribers-only chat or slow mode—to fit the event.
Prepare live-chat moderation in YouTube Studio
Before the event, open YouTube Studio and review your channel’s moderation settings. YouTube’s labels and navigation can change, so consult its current channel moderation settings guidance if the menu differs from what you see.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to your channel’s moderation settings.
- Review the live-chat content controls, including blocked words and whether potentially inappropriate messages should be held for review.
- Add terms relevant to your stream to the blocked-words list.
- Decide who will watch chat and what action to take for disruptive messages or repeat offenders.
- Add trusted moderators and choose participation settings for the event.
Blocked words and automatic review are aids, not guarantees. YouTube cautions that no system is perfect; context-sensitive decisions still need a human moderator.
Choose who can participate and how quickly they can post
Pick the least restrictive setting that suits the event. Available choices can depend on the stream and the interface, so check the current event setup.

Add moderators and assign the right role
Add people you trust before you go live, and agree on who is monitoring chat and when to remove a message, time out a user, or hide a repeat offender.

Handle held messages and individual users during a stream
Review messages held for moderation
YouTube can hold potentially inappropriate messages so moderators can review them. Show a held message only if it is appropriate for the stream; hide it if it is not. If nobody acts, the message stays hidden. Filters can miss unwanted messages or hold something that needs context, so keep a moderator available to review the queue.

Remove, time out, or hide a user
Use the action menu on a message to choose the response. Removing a message addresses that post. A timeout temporarily prevents its author from sending chat messages for the selected period. Hiding a user makes their chat messages and comments invisible to other viewers, and YouTube does not tell the user they were hidden. Choose the least restrictive action that resolves the disruption.
Understand chat availability and AI summaries
YouTube Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not in embedded players. Viewers watching an embedded stream should open its YouTube watch page to use chat. YouTube also offers experimental AI-generated summaries of public chat conversation; they summarize chat, not the stream itself, and may be inaccurate, offensive, or inappropriate. Treat them as an imperfect aid, not a moderation decision.

- A message does not appear: Check whether it was held for review. A held message stays hidden unless a moderator shows it.
- A viewer cannot post: Check whether the event uses subscribers-only or members-only chat, whether the viewer meets any subscription-duration threshold, and whether the user is in timeout.
- Chat is moving too quickly: Enable slow mode in the event’s chat controls; it can be used alongside subscribers-only chat.
- A moderator cannot find a control: Confirm their role. Managing moderators have extra chat controls but cannot access Studio or Live Control Room; role capabilities also vary by device and interface.
- Viewers cannot use chat in an embedded stream: Direct them to the YouTube watch page, where Live Chat is available.
