Choose how to capture the game
The right OBS source depends on whether the game is running on your computer or a console, and on your operating system.
Recording a PC game
On Windows, OBS recommends trying Game Capture first for games using DirectX or OpenGL. Add it as a source in your scene and select the game if needed. If it does not capture correctly, OBS also documents platform-specific display and window capture options; choose the one that works for your system and game.
Recording a console through a computer
Connect a compatible game capture device to the computer and add it in OBS as a Video Capture Device source. Check the device’s supported resolution, frame rate, console compatibility, audio routing, and whether it provides passthrough if you want to play on a separate display. OBS documents this general workflow, but it does not validate particular capture-card models.

A docked Nintendo Switch can use a compatible capture device. A Switch Lite cannot be docked, so it cannot use that hardware route. Another possibility, where the console and its remote-play software support it, is capturing the remote-play window on the computer. That approach depends on network quality.
Set up OBS and verify the picture
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its suggested starting configuration for your system rather than assuming one output setting suits every computer.
- Create a scene. In the Sources panel, add the game capture source appropriate to your PC or console setup.
- Check the preview. Confirm that OBS shows the game at the expected size and that the image is not obscured by another source.
- Choose a recording destination. In OBS settings, set where recordings will be saved and confirm you have enough free storage for the session.
- Choose output options your computer can sustain. OBS offers recording-quality presets and hardware encoders when available, but there is no universal setting. Higher quality can increase file size and performance demands.
Set up game audio and commentary
Watch the Audio Mixer while the game is playing and while you speak. The game or desktop-audio meter should move with game sound; the microphone meter should move with your voice. If the wrong input is active, select the intended devices manually in OBS audio settings.

For a narrated walkthrough, make sure your commentary is clear over the game audio. An existing headset or microphone may be enough; a separate microphone is optional. Listen to the test recording rather than relying only on moving meters, since meters cannot confirm that the recorded sound is intelligible or balanced.
Make and review a short test recording
- Record a few minutes of gameplay, including a section with game sound and a spoken explanation.
- Open the resulting file from the recording destination you chose.
- Check that the game appears correctly, both audio sources are present, commentary stays in sync, and the video does not stutter.
- If the capture is slow or uneven, reduce the recording demands or change the available encoder, then make another short test before recording a full session.
Testing catches capture, audio, performance, and file-location problems before they affect a long walkthrough. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a full recording.

Shape the walkthrough for viewers
Organize the recording around the game, episode, objective, or question the viewer wants answered. Clear explanations and purposeful edits help viewers follow the action; chapter changes should be easy to understand. These are editorial choices, not formal YouTube requirements.
If you publish gameplay footage, consider what original contribution the video adds, such as commentary, substantive editing, educational explanation, or entertainment value. YouTube’s reused-content policy assesses channels, and gameplay footage alone does not settle whether content qualifies for monetization. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: having a transformative format does not itself establish that you have permission to use every game, soundtrack, or other included material. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and make sure you have the rights needed for your upload.

Export and upload to YouTube
Use an upload-friendly export
YouTube’s encoding recommendations list MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and a frame rate that matches the recording. Its recommended video bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate:

These are YouTube’s recommended upload video bitrates, not required OBS recording bitrates. YouTube’s published recommendations can change, so check its recommended upload encoding settings when preparing an export. The figures above cover the listed SDR formats; they should not be treated as recommendations for formats or frame rates not shown.

Upload and publish
- Open YouTube Studio and upload the exported video.
- Complete the video details and select the audience setting.
- Review the checks shown during upload, including any copyright checks.
- Choose a visibility setting. Use private or unlisted if you want to inspect the video before making it public; choose public when you are ready for viewers to find it.
Uploading imports the file into YouTube. Publishing controls when and how viewers can access it.
Troubleshooting common recording problems
- The game does not appear in OBS: Confirm you added a source suited to the capture path and selected the correct game or device. For console capture, check the device connection and compatibility. Try another documented capture source, such as window or display capture, if appropriate for your platform.
- There is no game sound: Check that the game or desktop-audio meter moves in the Audio Mixer and that the intended audio device is selected.
- The microphone is missing or too quiet: Select the intended microphone manually and watch its mixer meter while speaking. Review the recording to confirm the result.
- Video stutters during recording: Lower the output demands or choose another available encoder, then test again. OBS settings depend on the computer; a short recording is the practical way to check.
- The image or sound is out of sync: Review a short recording before a full session and check the capture and audio devices and routing. The appropriate adjustment depends on the setup; do not assume a single sync setting will suit all hardware.
- You cannot find the recording: Recheck the recording destination in OBS settings and look in that folder for the saved file.
- YouTube flags or restricts content: Review the applicable notice and the rights for the game footage, music, and other material. Monetization eligibility and copyright permissions are distinct issues.
