For most SDR YouTube streams, start with H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, Rec. 709 at 8-bit, and AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Set the video bitrate to match your chosen resolution and frame rate: YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. Use the highest combination your computer and upload connection can sustain reliably—not automatically the highest resolution.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
This is a practical H.264 baseline for an ordinary SDR stream where broad compatibility matters. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommended ingest video bitrates, not total upload rates or guarantees of picture quality. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but use the H.264 table below only when streaming H.264. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance supplies the platform recommendations; OBS controls and encoder names can differ by operating system, GPU, drivers, and OBS version.
| Setting | Recommended starting point |
|---|---|
| Video encoder | H.264, using a hardware or software encoder supported by your system |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds |
| Resolution and frame rate | Match your content, upload capacity, and audience needs |
| Video bitrate | Use the H.264 recommendation for the chosen ingest resolution and frame rate in the table below |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps |
| Streaming protocol | RTMPS when available |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
H.264 bitrate by resolution and frame rate
These are YouTube’s recommended and minimum H.264 video bitrates. They do not include audio or network overhead. Choose the row that matches the resolution and frame rate you actually send to YouTube.
| Ingest resolution / frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
The figures are from YouTube’s current encoder settings page, which did not display a publication year when accessed on October 3, 2026. Treat them as platform recommendations, not as evidence that a particular bitrate will look best on every game or system.

Choose quality your connection and PC can sustain
Resolution and frame rate
Higher resolution can preserve more image detail; higher frame rate can make fast motion look smoother. Both increase encoding and delivery demands. A 1080p60 target is not automatically better than 1080p30 or 720p60 if the encoder overloads or the connection cannot deliver it consistently. For fast-moving gameplay, 60 fps may be useful if your system and upload link can sustain the corresponding bitrate. For slower content, a lower frame rate may be a reasonable trade-off.
Bitrate and upload headroom
YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate must not exceed the upload bandwidth available to the stream, and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Audio also uses bandwidth, and other devices or people sharing the network can reduce what remains. Run an upload speed test under realistic conditions and select a bitrate that leaves room for those demands. The recommendation in the table is not a target to force onto a weak or variable connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Codec and compatibility
H.264 is a straightforward starting point for a typical SDR workflow. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps, but the encoder must be available in your OBS setup and supported by your hardware and workflow. YouTube publishes different bitrate recommendations for different codecs, so do not apply an H.264 figure to an AV1 or H.265 stream. For example, its recommended AV1/H.265 rates include 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps; the corresponding minimums are 4, 4, and 2 Mbps. Check the codec-specific table before using one of those encoders.
Latency and 4K
YouTube says 4K/2160 streams cannot use its low-latency optimization and are set to normal latency. If low latency matters to your broadcast, account for that limitation before choosing 4K.

Set the encoder and stream details
OBS labels and available options vary by platform, encoder, and version, so use these values as targets rather than assuming every setup exposes identical controls. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends RTMPS, which it describes as a secure extension of RTMP.
- Choose a supported video encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Output and select a hardware or software H.264 encoder available on your system. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software at no charge among its verified software encoders; actual encoder choices depend on the computer. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Set rate control and bitrate. In the encoder’s streaming options, choose CBR and enter the recommended H.264 video bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Do not exceed what your upload link can sustain.
- Set the keyframe interval. Enter 2 seconds. YouTube recommends this frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose the output resolution and frame rate. Use the combination that fits your content, system and upload capacity. Do not choose 1080p60 or 4K just because they are available.
- Configure audio. For ordinary stereo, use AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube requires AAC and recommends 48 kHz at 384 kbps.
- Use SDR color settings when streaming SDR. YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth for SDR.
- Use the advanced video parameters if your encoder exposes them. YouTube recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC entropy coding.
HDR is an end-to-end workflow, not a checkbox
For HDR, YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends HEVC and 10-bit depth, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Only choose HDR when your content, OBS configuration, encoding hardware, and complete delivery workflow support it; enabling an HDR-related option alone does not establish that the whole stream is correctly configured.

Test before the broadcast
YouTube’s preparation guidance says to test before starting a live stream. Use a test that resembles the planned broadcast, including similar game motion and audio, rather than relying on a static desktop scene.
- Arrange the stream in YouTube Live Control Room ahead of the event and confirm the encoder is connected to the intended stream.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, as YouTube’s preparation checklist advises.
- Review the Live Control Room preview and check picture, audio, and stream health messages before telling viewers the stream is ready.
- During the broadcast, keep monitoring stream health and listen for audio problems; a successful connection alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving the intended picture and sound.
- Check that local archive files are being saved as intended and verify watch-page availability.
YouTube’s concise reminder is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Troubleshoot dropped frames, disconnects, and overload
Separate network trouble from encoder trouble. Raising bitrate will not fix an overloaded encoder or an unstable connection.
- Dropped frames or stream-health warnings: Compare total stream bitrate with available upload bandwidth, leave the recommended 20% headroom, and account for other network users. If delivery remains unstable, reduce bitrate by choosing a lower resolution or frame rate and retest.
- Encoder overload or choppy output: The computer may not be sustaining the selected resolution, frame rate, or encoding workload. Test a lower resolution or frame rate, or use a hardware encoder if one is available and supported. There is no single preset that guarantees a fix for every PC.
- Connection drops: Check whether the upload link is reliable and whether network use changes during the stream. YouTube recommends a reliable network and an upload test; a wired connection may be worth trying if Wi-Fi is inconsistent, but a cable cannot resolve ISP, router, congestion, or encoder problems by itself.
- Unexpectedly poor picture: Confirm that the bitrate row matches the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate being sent. Check the preview and test representative motion; the table’s recommended rate is not a promise of a particular visual result.
- Keyframe or protocol mismatch: Confirm the interval is 2 seconds (never over 4) and use RTMPS where available.
Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without OBS
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or gameplay broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. This is not a replacement for OBS when you need to capture live gameplay or a camera feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running without a computer left on at home. It accepts uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A monthly option is $9.99 per month.
Quick Recap
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
