How to Add a Webcam Overlay to a YouTube Live Stream

Use OBS Studio to layer a webcam over gameplay or screen content, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview before going live.

To put your webcam over gameplay or another video on YouTube, build the scene in encoder software such as OBS Studio: add the camera as a Video Capture Source, place it above your gameplay or screen source, then connect OBS to YouTube and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube’s direct webcam option is simpler, but an encoder gives you the layered scene controls needed for a movable picture-in-picture overlay.

Choose the right YouTube streaming route

Route Best for Overlay control
YouTube webcam A straightforward camera broadcast from a computer; YouTube also documents screen sharing in this workflow. Simpler setup, but use an encoder scene when you need to position and resize a webcam over another video source.
Encoder such as OBS Studio Gameplay, screen content, overlays, external audio, or additional video hardware. Compose the scene from layered sources and control their size, position, and order.

YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays and use hardware such as cameras and microphones. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and its webcam streaming guide.

Add the webcam overlay in OBS Studio

  1. Enable YouTube live streaming ahead of time. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and complete live-stream setup. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this well before a scheduled broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Open an OBS scene. Select an existing scene or create one for the gameplay, window, or presentation you intend to show. An OBS scene is a layout built from sources; see the OBS Quick Start Guide.
  3. Add your camera. In the Sources dock, choose to add a Video Capture Source, then select the webcam in that source’s properties. You do not need to buy a new camera if you already have one that works. OBS’s webcam FAQ covers adding and configuring the source.
  4. Position and size the overlay. Select the webcam in the preview and drag it to a corner or other suitable spot; resize it so it is visible without obscuring important game or presentation details. In the Sources list, move the webcam above the gameplay or screen source. Higher sources render in front of lower ones, so a webcam underneath the game capture may be hidden. See the OBS Sources Guide.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, select YouTube in OBS if that option is available. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
  6. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming video to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the correct camera is visible, the framing is right, and the overlay does not cover essential content. OBS recommends testing settings for a few minutes before a first stream or recording.
  7. Go live and monitor the broadcast. Once the preview is ready, start the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room and keep an eye on video and audio. YouTube recommends checking the preview before selecting Go live.

For a first broadcast, a short private or otherwise limited test can help catch framing, audio, or connection problems before the intended audience joins. Follow YouTube’s current visibility and live controls for the test.

Check upload bandwidth before streaming

Your internet connection must carry the full outgoing stream, including the video and audio sent by OBS. YouTube recommends having 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of stability; leave headroom for normal connection variation and other devices using the network. The recommendation appears in YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Troubleshoot a missing or poor-looking overlay

  • The webcam is hidden behind gameplay: In OBS’s Sources list, move the Video Capture Source above the game or screen source. Source order determines what appears in front.
  • The wrong camera or a blank image appears: Open the webcam source properties and verify that the intended device is selected. If the camera is in use elsewhere, close other applications that may be using it and check the source again.
  • The overlay blocks important game information: Resize it or drag it to a less obstructive corner or edge in the OBS preview.
  • The stream is unstable: Compare your available upload bandwidth with the total outgoing bitrate, following YouTube’s recommendation for 20% headroom. Reduce competing network use if the connection is shared.
  • You cannot start the first stream: Confirm that live streaming has been enabled for the channel and allow for YouTube’s stated first-time setup delay, which may be up to 24 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud

OBS is the right route when you want a live webcam layered over gameplay. For a different use—keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than from your home computer. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
