To reframe a horizontal video for YouTube Shorts or another vertical placement, make a separate version in the target aspect ratio, then adjust the crop throughout the edit so faces, action, captions, and graphics stay visible. Automatic reframing can provide a starting point, but review the exported video before uploading.
Choose the aspect ratio for the destination
Aspect ratio determines the shape of the frame. Reframing changes which parts of the original image are visible; changing a file label alone will not make a horizontal composition work well vertically.

Reframe a video in a repeatable workflow
- Preserve the master. Keep the original footage or edit sequence unchanged. Make a duplicate sequence or a new canvas for each social placement so the new crop does not damage the widescreen version.
- Set the target shape first. Create a 9:16 sequence for vertical Shorts, Reels, or TikTok, or select the appropriate feed ratio before moving clips. For regular YouTube, retain 16:9.
- Use automatic reframing as a first pass. In Premiere Pro, select the sequence and choose Auto Reframe Sequence, select the target ratio such as vertical 9:16, then create the reframed sequence. - Review every shot and transition. Check whether the subject remains in frame as it moves. Adjust position, scale, or rotation, and add keyframes where needed. Automatic analysis does not guarantee that it will keep every subject, important action, or piece of text visible. - Check text and visual details. Inspect faces, subtitles, titles, product or gameplay details, and graphics at every cut. Make sure the crop does not clip words or hide context at the edge of the frame.
- Export and inspect the rendered file. Watch the export, not just the editing preview. Confirm the aspect ratio, framing, transitions, and readability before uploading.
Make a horizontal video work in a vertical crop
A 9:16 frame is much narrower than a typical 16:9 source, so some horizontal content will be excluded. If a central subject is the only important element, a simple crop may work. If two people, a game HUD, on-screen text, or action spread across the width, use keyframes to follow the relevant area, revise the composition, or consider editing a version specifically for vertical viewing rather than forcing the entire original frame into the crop.

Review the whole piece rather than checking only its opening. A subject can move, a second person can enter, or a key graphic can appear later. Check shot changes closely, since an automatic crop can choose a different focal position from one shot to the next.
Check YouTube Shorts requirements before upload
YouTube Help says a Short uploaded from a computer may be up to three minutes and must have a square or vertical aspect ratio. YouTube’s stated classification rule applies to uploads made on or after October 15, 2024: square or vertical videos up to three minutes are categorized as Shorts. Check YouTube’s current guidance for changes before publishing.

Choose an editor based on the corrections you need
Premiere Pro’s Auto Reframe can work on clips or an entire sequence, with manual position, scale, rotation, and keyframe adjustments available afterward. CapCut documents Auto Reframe with aspect-ratio selection and adjustment options, and separately explains changing a video’s canvas ratio. Feature availability can vary by app version and device.
