OBS Studio is the best starting point for most beginners who want free, flexible software and are willing to learn a few controls. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard helps set up a first stream, and you can build a simple scene from gameplay, a window or display, and optional camera and audio sources. Choose Streamlabs Desktop instead if guided onboarding and built-in alerts, overlays, or widgets matter more than keeping every feature free.

This guide covers a first test stream from setup through troubleshooting. It focuses on live streaming from a computer; a console capture card is only relevant if you are bringing console video into that computer. Software compatibility alone does not guarantee smooth streaming: the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and upload connection all matter.

Choose OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop

Both applications can get a beginner streaming, but they suit different workflows. This is a feature and setup comparison, not a measured performance test.

Your priority Good first choice Trade-off
Free, flexible setup; Windows, macOS, or Linux OBS Studio You assemble a scene from sources and learn the controls. Check the current download page for supported operating systems.
Guided onboarding and built-in alerts, overlays, or widgets Streamlabs Desktop Basic use is free, but features such as multistreaming and premium overlays may require a paid plan. Check current plan details before relying on them.

For a computer-game stream, screen presentation, or camera-led broadcast, either may fit. Choose based on your operating system, computer capability, preferred setup experience, and whether you need built-in production extras. Elgato’s software comparison also discusses XSplit Broadcaster and Meld Studio; it is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent benchmark.

Check your computer and install the software

OBS Studio

Download OBS from the official download page and consult its system requirements. The requirements page describes compatibility for Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or later, and Linux/Unix configurations, but the download page may set newer minimums for a particular build. Verify both pages for your operating system before installing. OBS warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and other demands on the machine.

Streamlabs Desktop

Check the current quick-start guide and system requirements when installing. Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guidance lists 8 GB RAM and 10 GB storage as minimums, and recommends 16 GB or more RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Those are vendor recommendations, not a promise that a particular game and scene will run well. Its April 25, 2025 requirements page gives different operating-system guidance and cites 3.6 Mbps or better upload speed for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. Treat that speed as dated guidance, allow headroom, and check the current requirements for both Streamlabs and your streaming platform.

Set up your first test stream

  1. Run the initial setup wizard. In OBS, choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Answer for your intended use and available hardware and network; OBS uses that information to suggest settings. In Streamlabs Desktop, follow onboarding, then connect your destination under Settings → Stream. The Streamlabs quick-start guide explains its connection flow for supported destinations including YouTube and Twitch.
  2. Create one simple scene. A scene is the layout; sources are the items inside it. Add only what the broadcast needs: game capture, window or display capture, and optionally a webcam. In OBS, use the scene and source controls; in Streamlabs, create a scene and add sources. Close private windows and silence notifications before capturing a display so personal material does not appear on stream. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and Streamlabs getting-started guide.
  3. Verify the audio devices. Speak into the microphone and play computer audio while watching the audio meters. If a meter does not move, or the wrong sound is captured, select the intended device in the application’s audio settings and test again. Streamlabs’ quick-start workflow notes that on macOS, its described method for capturing desktop audio requires audio-routing software. An external USB microphone for streaming is optional; first see whether your existing microphone sounds clear enough.
  4. Set conservative video output and bitrate. Keep the base canvas at your display’s native resolution, then choose an output resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can sustain. Streamlabs recommends 1280×720 as a balance and suggests 30 fps for less demanding content; it says 60 fps can suit faster action when the setup permits. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees. Use the platform’s current bitrate guidance and the OBS wizard as starting points, then test rather than assuming one setting fits every game, encoder, or connection. OBS explains that performance depends on several interacting factors in its requirements documentation.
  5. Make a short test recording or private/test broadcast. Where the platform supports a test or private broadcast, use it before going public. Check framing, capture, microphone and computer audio, dropped frames, and the resulting recording or replay. OBS recommends a brief test rather than making a first public stream your first run; Streamlabs’ checklist also calls for checking widgets, camera placement, and audio meters.
  6. Go live when the test is right. Enter a title, description, and category where prompted. Start without alerts or overlays if you do not need them; they are optional production features, not prerequisites. Add them later and repeat a test if they make the scene more complex.

Optional equipment and console capture

You can begin with built-in devices or the equipment you already own. A webcam is useful only if you want a face camera; add it as a video-capture source and check framing and lighting in a test. A capture card is for a console-to-computer workflow, not a requirement for streaming PC gameplay. Before buying one, confirm that it supports your console, computer connections, resolution, and refresh-rate needs; compatibility varies by model. OBS and Streamlabs both support capture-device sources.

Troubleshoot common first-stream problems

  • The stream stutters or drops frames: Lower output resolution or frame rate, reduce scene complexity, and retest. Check that upload capacity is sufficient for the chosen platform settings and leave connection headroom. A computer can meet an application’s minimum requirements yet still struggle with a demanding game and scene.
  • There is no microphone or desktop audio: Check the selected input/output devices and watch the meters while making sound. For Streamlabs’ described macOS desktop-audio workflow, install and configure audio-routing software as its guide directs; otherwise use an available capture method supported by your setup.
  • The game or screen is not visible: Confirm the correct source is in the active scene, that it captures the intended game, window, or display, and that the source is not hidden or obscured. Make a short recording to check the result before going live.
  • The video looks soft or the computer cannot keep up: Separate canvas resolution from output resolution. Keep the canvas matched to the display, then reduce output resolution or frame rate and test. Do not raise settings simply because the machine can display that resolution; encoding is additional work.
  • The service will not connect or the stream does not appear: Recheck the connected account or destination in the app’s stream settings and confirm the platform is ready to receive the broadcast. If you use a stream key, copy it only from the platform’s official dashboard and treat it as a password; never show it on screen or share it. Follow the platform’s current live-streaming and account requirements.
  • Personal information appears in the broadcast: Stop the stream if needed, remove or hide the display-capture source, close private windows, and disable notifications before resuming. Test the full scene again.
