A virtual background replaces or hides what your camera sees behind you with a still image, video, blur, or composed scene. You can create one with a physical green screen and chroma key, or use supported software to separate you from an ordinary room. For a live stream, compose the effect in streaming software such as OBS, then send that scene to your streaming service—or use OBS Virtual Camera when another app needs a webcam feed.
How a virtual background works
The software separates the foreground—usually you—from the background. It then replaces the background with an image or video, blurs it, or leaves a different scene visible. A chroma-key setup removes a specific color from a physical screen; software background removal estimates the boundary between you and the room without requiring that screen.
In OBS, the resulting camera image can be layered over a background source in a scene and streamed as part of the composed output. If another application accepts a webcam, OBS Virtual Camera can send that scene to it.
Do you need a green screen?
No. A physical screen is optional if your software and device support background removal without one. The two approaches have different trade-offs, and compatibility and results depend on the application, hardware, lighting, and setup.

Physical green or blue screen
A solid, evenly lit surface gives chroma-key software a distinct color to remove. Zoom says its green-screen method can improve sharpness and definition around the subject and use fewer system resources than its no-screen method. Use a bright, distinct screen color, light it evenly, and avoid clothing that matches the color being keyed. A green-screen backdrop is useful if you want this controlled surface, but it is not a requirement for every virtual background.
Software removal without a screen
Software identifies the subject against the real room, so separation can be less precise at the edges and may require more system resources. Zoom recommends lighting the subject and some of the background uniformly. NVIDIA’s announcement for OBS 28.0 described NVIDIA Broadcast virtual-background integration for GeForce RTX streamers without a physical green screen; its setup guide says to add a Video Capture Source and select Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast). Check the current compatibility and requirements for your own software and hardware, since support can change.

Set up a virtual background in OBS with a green screen
- Add your webcam: In the OBS scene, add a Video Capture Source and select the camera you want to use.
- Apply chroma key: Select the camera source, add the Chroma Key filter, and choose the screen color to remove. Adjust the filter while watching the preview so the screen disappears without cutting into your hair, clothing, or other foreground detail.
- Place the background behind the camera: Add an image, video, or other scene layer, then arrange the sources so the camera foreground appears above the replacement background.
- Check the scene before going live: Inspect framing, lighting, and edges in OBS preview. Correct color spill or uneven areas before starting the stream.
OBS’s camera-source and Chroma Key documentation describes this basic webcam-and-key workflow. The exact filter tuning depends on your screen, camera, and lighting.
Use supported software removal with OBS
- Confirm compatibility: Check the background-removal application’s current supported hardware and operating-system requirements before building the scene.
- Add its camera output in OBS: Add a Video Capture Source and select the camera provided by the background-removal software. NVIDIA’s guide, for example, specifies Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast).
- Build and inspect the scene: Put your chosen background behind the processed camera and review the result in preview. Watch for edge artifacts and changes when you move.
- Check performance: Background video and no-green-screen effects can demand more system resources. If the image stutters or the computer struggles, try a still background, reduce other processing, or consider a physical screen if your software supports chroma key.
Send an OBS scene to another app with Virtual Camera
- Choose the output: In OBS Virtual Camera settings, select the output you need. Program is the normal choice for the finished scene. OBS also offers Preview, Scene, and Source output choices.
- Start the camera: In the OBS Controls dock, click Start Virtual Camera.
- Select it in the receiving app: Open that app’s camera settings and choose OBS Virtual Camera.
- Verify before presenting or streaming: Confirm that the receiving app shows the intended scene. In Studio Mode, Preview output shows the preview scene, including edits as they happen; choose another output if you need the live Program scene instead.
Virtual Camera is useful when the receiving app expects a webcam input. If OBS itself is sending the stream, you can use the composed OBS scene directly rather than routing it through another app.

Use Zoom’s built-in virtual background
- Open the settings: In Zoom desktop, go to Settings > Video & effects > Virtual backgrounds. During a meeting, you can also open the same settings from the arrow beside Video.
- Choose an effect: Select an included image, upload an image or video, choose Blur, or select None.
- Check the fit: Zoom recommends matching the background image’s aspect ratio to your camera. For a 16:9 camera, its examples are 1280×720 or 1920×1080.
Zoom documents custom stills as 24-bit PNG or JPEG files up to 15 MB. Its documented video formats are MP4 or MOV, with supported resolutions from 480×360 to 1920×1080. Requirements for effects can vary by device, and an account administrator may disable or restrict virtual backgrounds. Zoom notes that higher-quality cameras produce a better virtual background.
Improve the result before you go live
- Light evenly: Zoom’s guidance is concise: “Use uniform lighting and color.” Avoid harsh shadows or uneven brightness across a keyed screen.
- Separate subject and background: Make the screen color distinct from your clothes and visible objects. For software removal without a screen, light both yourself and some of the background.
- Check the edges in motion: Preview the scene while turning your head or moving your hands; stillness can hide edge problems that become obvious on stream.
- Keep the scene readable: Choose a background that does not compete with your face or on-screen game content. Confirm that your camera framing and background proportions look natural together.
- Leave time for a preview: OBS Preview can expose scene changes before they reach Program when using Studio Mode. Check which virtual-camera output is selected so you do not accidentally send an unfinished preview.
Common problems and fixes
The green screen is still visible
Check that the Chroma Key filter is applied to the webcam source and keyed to the screen’s actual color. Improve evenness of the screen lighting and adjust the filter while watching the preview.

Edges look rough or parts of you disappear
With chroma key, check whether clothing or objects share the keyed color and whether the screen is evenly lit. With software removal, improve separation through uniform light on you and some of the room; if quality remains inadequate, compare against a physical-screen setup supported by the application.
The background effect slows the computer
Video backgrounds and no-screen effects can have higher system requirements. Try a still image, close other demanding applications, or use a physical screen and chroma key if available. Check the effect’s current device requirements rather than assuming every computer supports it.

The receiving app does not show OBS Virtual Camera
Start Virtual Camera in OBS’s Controls dock, then reopen or refresh the receiving app’s camera selection and choose OBS Virtual Camera. Make sure the chosen OBS output is the one you intend to send.
The wrong OBS scene appears
Check the Virtual Camera output mode. Program sends the finished scene; Preview sends the Studio Mode preview; Scene or Source can lock output to a specific scene or source.
Zoom’s virtual-background option is missing or unavailable
Check the desktop app and device requirements for the effect, and whether your account administrator has disabled or restricted virtual backgrounds. Zoom states that video backgrounds and effects without a green screen require more system resources.
Or let it run in the cloud
A virtual background changes how your camera scene looks; it does not by itself keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running. If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel stream built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free day.
