OBS Studio is the best first streaming app to evaluate on an older PC because it supports a wide range of Windows, macOS and Linux systems and includes an Auto-Configuration Wizard. That does not mean every compatible computer can stream smoothly: the game, encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene all affect performance. Start with a simple OBS setup, then test it with the actual game and sources you plan to use.
What lightweight streaming software can an older PC run?
OBS Studio is a practical starting point, not a guaranteed performance winner. OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 plus X window system or Wayland as basic requirements. Those are compatibility requirements, not a promise of smooth streaming. OBS explicitly cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See OBS system requirements.
No controlled comparison establishes that OBS uses less CPU than Streamlabs Desktop on identical older PCs. A simple camera scene in one app may be lighter than a scene with animated overlays and browser sources in another; a demanding game can dominate either workload.
OBS Studio
Consider OBS first if your computer has limited resources. Its official documentation covers hardware encoding, performance troubleshooting and an Auto-Configuration Wizard that factors in intended use, hardware and network conditions. Download it from the official OBS download page.

Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs Desktop is an alternative, but check its current requirements against your particular PC and the release you plan to install. Its requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM minimum. It recommends newer processors and graphics cards, 16 GB or more of RAM and an SSD for resource-intensive use. That makes it a less obvious fit for many older systems. See Streamlabs Desktop system requirements.
Check your PC before choosing settings
Before configuring a stream, note your operating system, graphics adapter, RAM and the encoder available in your software. A processor or GPU brand alone does not establish that a specific hardware encoder is supported; check the exact model and the encoder options OBS exposes.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Graphics and encoding: OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync. Their support and quality vary by generation. Its hardware-encoding guidance lists GeForce 750 Ti or 900-series Maxwell and later for NVENC support, with later generations recommended for best results; it also notes a GTX 1650 revision distinction. For Quick Sync, it lists Intel Core-i 2xxx/Sandy Bridge or newer as supported, while recommending Haswell/Core-i 4xxx or newer because early QSV quality was low. These are compatibility and quality notes, not performance guarantees. Check OBS hardware encoding and verify the exact card or processor.
- Workload: A game, capture source, webcam, audio inputs, filters, browser sources and animated media all contribute to the work. Keep in mind that the PC may need to render a game while encoding and compositing the stream.
- Network: Available upload speed and platform settings constrain what you can send. Streamlabs gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a guideline for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms, not a universal guarantee. Its requirements page is the source for that figure; check your platform’s current guidance and available upload capacity.
Set up OBS for an older PC
- Install OBS from its official download page. Get the version intended for your operating system from OBS Studio Download. The cited download result showed version 32.2.2 released August 14, 2026; versions change, so use the release offered when you install.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its prompts for whether you will stream or record and the relevant hardware and network checks. Treat its result as a starting point, then test it with your real content. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Build a minimal scene. Add only the game or screen capture, essential audio inputs and overlays you need. Leave browser sources, animated media, extra filters and decorative overlays out until you know the basic stream runs smoothly.
- Use the encoder your PC can handle. If OBS offers a supported hardware encoder for your graphics hardware, try it and compare the result with software encoding in a real test. Hardware encoding can move work off the CPU, but model generation, quality and the rest of the workload matter.
- Test with the actual workload. Run the intended game or capture, scene, audio and overlays together. Opening OBS successfully is not proof that the PC can render and encode that particular stream without stutter or dropped frames.
What to change when the stream stutters or drops frames
Change one major setting at a time and test again, so you can identify what helped. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing workload when the system cannot keep up.
- Lower output resolution. If the output is choppy or OBS reports overload, reduce the output resolution and retest before adding more scene elements.
- Reduce frame rate. Dropping from 60 to 30 fps reduces the work. The trade-off is less motion smoothness, which may be acceptable for slower-paced games or screen content.
- Reduce game load. Cap the game’s frame rate, lower its graphics settings and close other applications using substantial GPU resources. The game and OBS may otherwise compete for the same graphics capacity.
- Simplify the scene. Remove unnecessary browser sources, filters, animated media and overlays. Add them back individually only if performance holds.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS notes this may resolve some GPU overload issues; it is a troubleshooting step, not a universal fix.
- Separate PC limits from network limits. The Auto-Configuration Wizard considers network conditions, but an unstable or insufficient upload connection can still disrupt a stream. Check actual upload capacity and the platform’s settings rather than assuming every dropped frame has the same cause.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a YouTube channel live using uploaded videos rather than stream live gameplay, StreamNeo is a different option: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your older PC does not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream a demanding game smoothly on an old PC?
It depends on the particular PC, game, encoder and scene. Test the full setup; compatibility with OBS alone does not establish that it can handle the workload.
Does hardware encoding always look better or use less system power?
No single result applies to every machine. Support and quality vary by encoder generation, so check the exact hardware and compare settings in a real test.
