It can keep a compatible camera powered during a long live stream, but it is not universal: confirm the exact camera compatibility and the coupler’s required power adapter and cable before buying.
What a dummy battery does
A DC coupler is shaped to fit a particular camera’s battery bay. Its cable connects to an external power source, so the camera can operate without relying on its normal in-camera battery for the session. Canon identifies its DR-E6P as a continuous-power option for extended sessions, including live streaming; Sony describes its DC-C1 as a USB Power Delivery (USB PD) coupler that inserts into a compatible camera’s battery slot.
“Dummy battery” does not mean one standard connector or power specification. A coupler must match the camera’s model or battery system, and its power source must meet that coupler’s requirements.
How to choose and set up one safely
- Identify your exact camera and battery. Check the camera manual, then check the accessory maker’s current compatibility list. For example, Canon lists the DR-E6P for select EOS models. Sony lists the DC-C1 for cameras using NP-FZ100 or NP-FW50 batteries and directs buyers to its model list. Neither example is universal.
- Read the coupler’s power requirements. Use the accessory’s instructions to determine the allowed power source, output, and cable. Do not assume voltage, wattage, polarity, or USB behavior based on another camera or coupler.
- Match the adapter and cable to those requirements. As examples of how much specifications can differ, Sony says the DC-C1 requires a USB PD supply rated at 65 W or higher and a 5 A USB PD cable. Sony’s support page lists a 100 W-or-higher threshold for the DC-C2. These figures apply to those specific couplers, not dummy batteries generally. See Sony’s compatible-output guidance.
- Route the cable so it cannot tug on the coupler. Keep it clear of moving parts and foot traffic, and arrange the power supply so an accidental pull is less likely to interrupt the setup.
- Test before going live. Power on the camera and verify normal operation with the intended source and cable. A coupler does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: the camera, power supply, connections, heat, and streaming setup all matter.
Panasonic’s DMW-DCC18 instructions give a separate example: they recommend the DMW-AC11 and specify USB PD with 9 V / 3 A output and a cable rated for 27 W or better when using a commercially available supply. Panasonic says operation is not guaranteed with all such devices. Read the DMW-DCC18 operating instructions.

Check whether your camera can run on USB power instead
A dummy battery may be unnecessary if the camera supports power while operating through its USB port. Do not treat USB charging and USB operation as interchangeable: check the manual for your specific model, including whether a battery must remain installed and what power source is required.
For one model-specific example, Panasonic says the DC-L10 can receive power through USB-C while turned on with a battery inserted. It recommends a 5 V / 3 A (15 W) adapter and a cable rated for at least 15 W, while cautioning that the remaining battery charge can decrease depending on usage and the power source’s capability. Canon’s EOS R6 Mark II online manual says the PD-E1 USB Power Adapter can power that camera and notes that the battery indicator appears gray when power is supplied. This describes the EOS R6 Mark II and that adapter; it should not be assumed to apply to other Canon cameras. Check the EOS R6 Mark II manual.
Compare the actual setup requirements
When weighing a DC coupler against USB operating power, compare the documented requirements for your camera and the specific accessories—not just their connector shapes.

Troubleshoot power problems before a stream
- The camera does not power on: Recheck the exact camera and battery-family compatibility, then confirm the adapter and cable meet the coupler’s stated requirements. A connector fitting physically does not establish electrical compatibility.
- The camera turns off or power is unreliable: Check that the power source meets the specified output, the cable is properly rated and seated, and the coupler remains correctly positioned. Test the complete setup before streaming.
- The battery level falls while using USB power: This can happen on supported setups; Panasonic notes that DC-L10 battery charge may decrease depending on use and source capability. Check the model-specific manual and adapter requirements.
- You need the camera’s USB port for another purpose: A coupler may leave it available, depending on the design. Sony says the DC-C2 powers through the battery chamber and leaves the camera’s USB-C port free; verify your own camera’s connection needs.
