These are matches to documented features, not winners from a hands-on comparison.
“Overlay” can mean a webcam picture-in-picture, text or a logo layered over the recording, or annotations such as arrows and drawings. Decide which one you need before choosing an app.
Which kind of overlay do you need?
- Webcam picture-in-picture: Your face appears over gameplay or a screen recording. Loom documents simultaneous screen-and-camera capture and camera framing; Camtasia documents built-in or external camera recording and placement of camera footage.
- Text, images, or scene graphics: These are layered visual sources that can be positioned and controlled in a scene. OBS documents text, image, webcam, browser-window, and window-capture sources.
- Annotations: Drawing, arrows, or marks used to point out something on screen. Loom documents drawing, while ScreenFlow lists freehand annotations and text and video animations.
These terms describe different workflows. A camera frame or live scene composition is not the same as adding arrows in an editor after recording.
Best screen recording software with overlays
OBS Studio — flexible scene composition

OBS also lists unlimited scenes, custom transitions, per-source audio filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode previews, Multiview, plugins, and Lua or Python scripts. The feature list does not establish that it is easier to set up, faster, or better-performing than the paid options here, and OBS is not presented as a dedicated post-production editor in the cited product information.
Loom — quick screen-and-camera messages
Loom’s Windows recorder documents simultaneous screen and camera capture, up to 4K, custom backgrounds, camera frames, and custom screen sizes. Its listed editing and sharing tools include transcript-based edits, clip stitching, drawing, captions, transcripts, noise elimination, and instant sharing links. That combination suits short explainers or feedback videos where a hosted link is part of the workflow.

The Windows product page supports Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11; do not assume every listed feature is available in the same way on other platforms. The page also lists a 25-video-per-member limit for the Starter plan and a 14-day trial for Business + AI. Plan limits and trial terms can change, so confirm them on Loom’s current page before relying on them.
ScreenFlow — Mac-oriented editing and annotations
ScreenFlow is presented by Telestream as screen recording and video-editing software. Its listed features include freehand annotations, text and video animations, multi-channel audio, iPhone and iPad screen recording, tutorial styles and templates, captions, publishing options, and ProRes and MP4 export. It is a fit to consider when editing and annotation matter alongside capture, particularly for a Mac-focused workflow.

Camtasia is the most directly described option here for a workflow that combines capture with instructional editing tools; that does not establish that it is the best choice for every game recording.

How to choose for a game recording
- Specify the overlay. For a live webcam picture-in-picture, prioritize documented screen-and-camera capture or scene composition. For arrows and written emphasis, prioritize annotation and editing tools.
- Decide when you want to edit. If the goal is a composed recording with configurable sources, OBS lists scene controls. If you need trimming, captions, animation, cursor emphasis, or multitrack post-production, compare the editing features listed by ScreenFlow and Camtasia. If you mainly need a quick message and shareable link, Loom documents editing and hosted sharing.
- Check your actual platform. OBS lists Windows, macOS, and Linux. Loom’s cited feature page is specifically for Windows. ScreenFlow is Mac-oriented. Verify Camtasia’s current system requirements and each product’s feature availability for your device before installing or buying.
- Check limits and total cost at checkout. Confirm current plan caps, trial conditions, licensing, and export requirements on the vendor’s own page. The documented feature pages are not a complete, synchronized price comparison.
- Test the whole composition before recording a long session. Confirm that the game or window is captured, the camera and overlays sit where you want them, and narration or game audio is included as needed. This is a practical workflow check, not a comparative performance claim.
Optional camera and microphone
An external webcam is optional if you want a face-camera overlay and your built-in camera is unsuitable or unavailable; Loom documents screen-and-camera recording, and Camtasia documents built-in or external camera footage. An external microphone is likewise optional for narrated videos: Camtasia lists built-in or external microphone capture. No particular camera or microphone model is established as necessary or preferred by these software feature pages.
