To use a teleprompter while live streaming, put your script on a phone, tablet, computer display, or camera-mounted prompter close to the camera lens. Make the text easy to read, set a scroll speed that matches your natural speaking pace, and rehearse with your actual camera, microphone, and streaming software before going live. A dedicated hardware prompter is optional.
Choose an app, browser, or camera-mounted prompter
There are two practical approaches: display the script on a nearby device, or use a dedicated rig that reflects or displays text in front of the camera. Choose based on how your camera is set up, how far you sit from it, and how closely you want the script aligned with the lens.

Hardware setup is product-specific, not a general requirement. For example, Elgato’s Prompter documentation covers camera mounts and backplates, a computer connection, and Camera Hub. Check the current manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model before mounting or connecting it.
Prepare a script you can deliver naturally
Write for speaking, not silent reading. Use conversational wording, short sentences, and clear transitions. Break a longer script into sections or cues so you can find your place after a pause or interruption. Leave room to look away briefly and resume without having to search through a dense block of text.

There is no universal ideal script length or scroll speed. Both depend on the speaker and the material; tune them in rehearsal rather than treating a preset as a target.
Position and configure the prompt
- Put the text near the lens. Place the screen or prompter as close to the camera lens as your setup allows. The closer the prompt is to the lens, the less your gaze has to travel away from the camera.
- Set a readable size. Sit or stand in your normal speaking position and increase the font until you can read comfortably. Adjust line spacing and, where available, brightness as well. Elgato’s setup guidance advises positioning at eye level and adjusting font size, brightness, and scroll speed.
- Choose a reading mode and pace. Start slowly, then read aloud and adjust the pace to match your delivery. OBS Teleprompter documents autoscroll, manual, and follow modes; available controls depend on the software you choose.
- Check text orientation. Reflective-glass systems may need a horizontal flip so the text reads correctly in the reflection. Do not enable mirror mode by default for a screen-only arrangement; check your prompter’s instructions.
Set up a teleprompter with OBS
A straightforward desktop workflow is to display the script on a separate phone, tablet, or dedicated prompter display while OBS captures your camera. This keeps the prompt available without requiring you to add it to the stream image. If you use a browser-based tool such as OBS Teleprompter, select the mode and pace that suit your delivery.

- Set up your camera and framing, then place the prompt as close to the lens as possible.
- Open your script in the chosen app, browser, or prompter display. If you need the script visible only to you, keep it on a separate device or display rather than adding it as a visible OBS source.
- Read the script aloud while adjusting font size, line spacing, and scroll speed. Use manual or follow controls if the text needs to pause or track your pace.
- Record or preview a rehearsal in your normal OBS scene. Check your framing, eye movement, audio, and whether you can recover your place after a pause.
- Before broadcasting, verify your stream destination and any platform-specific account eligibility or setup requirements. Integrations vary by software and can change, so check the current instructions for the app and destination you use.
Detailed overlay behavior depends on the chosen software, OBS version, operating system, and scene configuration. There is no single overlay recipe that applies to every setup.
Mount dedicated hardware safely
Follow the exact manual for your camera and prompter combination. For Elgato Prompter, the manufacturer’s setup material covers attaching the appropriate backplate and camera, connecting the device to a computer, installing Camera Hub, and adjusting the display. - Confirm the backplate and camera fit the product and that the lens does not touch the prompter glass.
- Check that the camera head or support can safely carry the camera, prompter, and accessories together. If it cannot, stop and check the manufacturer’s compatible support options and load limits before adding a mount.
- If the prompter connects to a computer, follow the product’s connection and software instructions rather than assuming it behaves like a standard monitor.
Rehearse the complete streaming workflow
Run through several minutes of the script at speaking volume using the final camera position, prompt placement, microphone, and streaming scene. Adjust the text and pace until you can speak naturally; do not rush to keep up with a scroll. If the conversation changes, pause or move the text manually if your software supports it.
Review a recording or preview for framing and eye movement. Confirm you can read the text without repeatedly looking far off-camera, that your voice is clear, and that your stream destination is correct. Troubleshoot common teleprompter problems
